New Bookcase

I have finally bought myself a new bookcase today. Mahogany reproduction of an old style with (don't tell anyone!) a concealed drawer in the top moulding.

Being short and with limited space, I have been looking for a not-too-tall narrow one so that I can give back to my daughter the one on temporary loan (seven years ago). She has been very patient but has now run out of room on her big bookcase shelves!

Now all I have to do is remove and dust my books and see if I can bear to discard any. I have piles of paperbacks in a heap on the bedroom night stand and only two extra shelves. (Sigh)

Congratulations on the new addition! Sounds lovely, although the book culling is always hard. Think how nice it will all look when you are finished...although we never do seem to finish these projects, as books take on a life of their own...

Congratulations on the new bookcase. And most especially on the secret drawer.

I once lived (briefly) in a house with a secret room. It still makes me happy to think about it.

Congratulations! They're beautiful, professional-looking, and you'll always know you all made them together. It's a really good feeling, isn't it? Great cutting on the corners of the mouldings, too. Love the feet in the last pic, up on the table basking in a job well done :)

I'd see if you can find someone in your area that would custom build them using finish carpentry plywood and solid wood trim. You probably wouldn't spend much more and really know what you are getting. And most likely much higher quality.

Thanks so much for the kind comments and taking a look at the pics. I should have waited and posted the whole 'shabodal' at once, since I got busy hosting T-day here and didn't make it back to this post. I'm sorry about that! It's been a crazy couple of days, but we did eat the turkey on time and I do have 90% complete pics to post, which I'll do so in just a bit. :) DLM .. One of the reasons I fell in love with this house is it has a small cozy cottage feel, but it's still fairly spacious .. well for an old house anyhow. This room is 16' x 16' .. by today's standards not large, but for an older home fairly spacious. Our ceilings down stairs are 9' 6" tall .. putting the semi gloss white beadboard up there really helps give the impression of height too, plus brightens the room a lot!

re secrets in furniture.
Many years ago I visited friends who lived in a large Victorian house in Blackheath (just SE of the river Thames) in London. Almost no alterations had been carried out and the study, to which the paterfamilias would have retired to escape from his wife, children and servants was fitted with bookcases and a large desk. This had the usual drawers, cupboards and so on, but at the top part of the desk behind a concealed panel there was a series of 'built-in' framed prints of scantily clad Victorian 'maidens' wearing little except button-boots, large 'picture' hats and come-hither smiles. Papa obviously did more in there than read the 'Times'.

But that is a "correct" use of fitted in that sentence.
Not like "I fitted into my jeans !!"

yoyo, for me "I fitted into my jeans" is correct, or, to be more honest " I wish I fitted into my jeans."

Thank you for the kind words. Now I have to think what I can use the concealed drawer for! I already have one in my dressing table for the 'Crown Jewels'. I don't go out of my way to buy furniture with hidden spaces, BTW, they are just part of the designs.

New bookcases are always wonderful, and with a secret drawer, no less! I just got the February issue of Southern Living, and one of the redecorated living rooms shows a big stack of books on the floor underneath an end table. My kind of place.

Sounds delightful Ann, and I am envious of the hidden drawer. I have never had anything as exciting as that!

The bookcase was delivered this (Saturday) afternoon. Quite a surprise as I wanted it next week after I got the old one emptied and collected. I staggered in from shopping in the heat with a long cold drink and dip in the Village pool in my mind when I got a call from the shop. "The delivery man is just leaving." I had 15 minutes to de-book, move furniture to make a clear path in the room and prop open the doors and gate!
The delivery man was not happy as he was just finishing and no doubt also had plans for a 'coldie' when he was told to do the run to my place! He was such a nice chap and when I explained that there had been an unfortunate misunderstanding by management, moved the old bookcase into the dining area so that the space for the new one was available. I had planned to do the changeover in a leisurely way. (Sigh)
I ignored the piles of books and misplaced furniture and had my drink and swim when he had driven off. I think I deserved it!
