1. Hopefully seeing flowers on some things that I have grown from seed
2. Walking out one day and finding the crow-bar fairy has planted all the stuff I can't!
3. Walking round the garden under an umbrella because it's raining
4. Buying myself a pair of gumboots because its raining very very very hard

all of the above, especially the umbrella and gumboots.
BUT I like Autumn best because at least there are 2 cooler months ahead, I don't like the summers we have been getting here lately.

I would suggest using all the cardboard moving boxes in addition to the paper. Multiple layers of cardboard laid down first is a common practice when making a new bed and is one of the best weed suppressors. Put it down and then top with the paper and compost. Then skip the tilling and just keep adding alternate layers of compost and soil on top - each several inches thick - and let it decompose down. Much easier and you end up up with weed-free beds and good rich soil. The cardboard will decompose over time and then you can till in a couple of years if you wish. Examine the local compost carefully first. Talk to other users first. There has been a sharp increase in herbicide contaminated compost issues over the past couple of years and some of them will survive the composting process for as much as a year. Dave

I love the Goldrush apple. Mine aren't ready yet. Probably a couple more weeks to go. I am in central NC. It is a very popular apple at the Raleigh, NC farmer's market. Nearly every orchard vendor has them for sale.

Growing tomatos in soil v. containers
Q

1 of the biggest mistakes I made when I began gardening was to double dig my beds(major back-breaking work too!) - I was told much later by the county extension folks that it can bring nematodes up closer to the surface. You live & you learn, I guess. My 1st attempts @ almost everything did very poorly. I grow all my tomatoes in the ground & have had plenty of success & I DO have root-knot nematodes, but I've found certain varieties seem less affected than others & what you grow before can help as well - I try to plant my tomatoes after things that the nematodes leave alone, like beans & peas. & no more tilling or double digging! I just keep adding to the surface & mix plenty of compost & amendments in the planting holes. Micro & macro critters mix the soil for me. & I mulch my tomatoes thickly w/ hay - seems to help keep foliar/fungal diseases down.

Shielam South Africa plants Arrived
Q

Renee, this is a group as noted in my response above. Anyone may join. We have two groups; one ordering from STC and another from Sheilam in South Africa. The way both work is you select your purchases listing them on an Excel sheet. The cost for your STC order will be in Euros and payment sent to a person in California who sends it on to STC in The Netherlands. Same with Sheilam but this is in USD. STC used to ship our order pre-sorted but now want lots of €€€€ to do this. So the plants are shipped to me in Michigan, I sort, repack and mail individuals their plants. The whole process from placing order to receiving plants takes about two to three weeks. Sheilam can take longer and their plants will need more TLC to re-establish, but their plants are a bit larger and less costly. There won't be any orders until spring, anyway not from me as our weather will be questionable by the time the plants would arrive. If you are interested, look at both websites and contact me in the spring. The Shielam site wants you to download their plant listings. STC Shielam

Agree with Alison and Marion, must a decent rainy season. Haven't seen one for a long time now. And not having to wear three jumpers and a jacket.

The pair of koalas living in the gum trees at our back door having a baby.
The flowering/fruiting of more of my own plantings.
The wallabies eating the grass again instead of my plants.
Fewer weeds coming up than in previous years.
Oh, yes, and RAIN.

Hi Melmat,

I am eagerly awaiting the coming of the next growing season - many of my plants have been in the clay long enough to put down decent roots, and I believe that I will have an explosion of flowers from my Grevillea, Callistemon, Banksia and, ahem, certain exotics that I wont mention here for fear of reprisals :)

About the only thing that I dont have in my garden is roses - horses for courses, but they just dont do it for me. I do look forward to my Bougainvillea and wattle providing colour next Winter, but my thoughts are very much focussed on Spring at the moment.

Cheers,

Artie

Well... I don't want to sound too ungrateful.. but I am actually looking forward to our dry season up here (which has not arrived yet). The temperature is still high and the rain is still around.... although the night temperature has actually started to drop. But, if you live here during the wet season, then you know what I mean.... The plants love it, but hey.... a little bit of cooler weather would not hurt.

Regards, Ari :)

I'm looking forward to watching my screening of bamboo and heliconias take off so I don't have to see the ghastly house next door.

Also can't wait to be able to wake for work and not be in complete darkness then come home in the dark.

All the trees bursting into flowers and new leaves, and hoping my bamboo's take off too. And eating all the vegetables that I have just planted.

But not looking forward to Summer at all if it is going to be like the last one
