Powdery Mildew

Does anyone know if any of the milk based PM remedies work? I like the idea of soemthing that is non toxic, [and I am willing to spray frequently with something that is not going to burn me like Triforine does], but I don't want to waste my time making my roses smell like yoghurt if it won't work. Anyone ever used one?

Hi Kate, it does work and if you dilute it 1 part to 10 (studies have shown that this is as good as 1 to 6) it has little smell. must be full cream milk though

I have used 1 part full ceam milk and 9 parts water .Its quite good although it tends to run off the leaves.I wonder if this can be effective.I have thought about adding a couple of drops of dishwasing liquid to give a "sticky"factor in the mix.
I read this somewhere but havent tried it.
Has someone tried that mix and, if so, how did it go?

It's not powder mildew. It looks like some sun scorch combined with transplant shock. Planting anything at this time of year is rife with risk of transplant shock, especially with high heat. And the rock mulch is not helping matters.

I sometimes try to throw the cornmeal under that plant but it all lands in one clump. Organic fertilizer hates being in a clump, so when you drop it down through the middle of the plant there is a Plinko effect which randomizes the droppage through the leaves. Cornmeal is one of the ingredients in many organic fertilizers. When the beneficial microbes in the soil decompose it, in about 3 weeks the end result is plant food. That is why organic fertilizer is said to be slow release. Actually it is slow decomp followed by very fast uptake by the plants.

where are you.... big city name.. mildews in fall are ubiquitous for most of us... research indicates its a deciduous plant.. its september.. ugly leaves in sept usually arent a big deal for me.. clean them up when they fall off.. and be done with it.. should you wish to have avoided this.. you should have been spraying all summer long.. BEFORE it appeared... those black spots.. dont look like powdery mildew to me... ken

I have liquid copper for spraying but never got around to using it. What I use today is Orchard Spray which is sulfur for disease/fungus and pyrethrin for bugs. I mix one tablespoon per gallon and spray all my plants - usually less than 2 gallons in total. Pick off your worst infected leaves (if rhizomatous, you can use them for propagation as long as they have more healthy looking sections than infected parts). I spray in place because 1) I have too many (hundreds of plants) to remove to another area and 2) it is in the basement. Persistence is the key in getting mildew under control. Here are some of my begonias from the 16th of this month. I have sprayed 3 times this winter and see no more signs of mildew.

Have read the the fat in full-cream milk blocks the 'pores'in the leaves. I for one never knew leaves had pores so I cannot comment further. I have used both the full cream and Trim and found both work wonders on mildew on any plant. You have to keep using it though as it washes off. I spray it on cuts after pruning - religiously - because I am in a humid zone. Wouldn't use anything else.

Apple cider vinegar (i part vinegar to 8 parts water) also works.If you dont mind your roses smelling like a fish and chip shop.
