Thanks all. Yes, those are hips from the rose, "Windrush". They are actually a pretty shade of orange but showed up yellow in the photo. Others are Hydrangea, Golden Rod, Virginia Creeper, a bit of Black Eyed Susan and Queen Anne's Lace. Tied together in the middle by raffia. And it would have been nice if I'd cleaned the bird poop off the gate before I took the photo! grrr.

Killing temperatures of immature roots are pretty high, even with northern hardy nursery items like Japanese maples. If you lose the immature roots it may not show in the top, except perhaps for slower top growth until the lost roots are replaced. I encounter lots of potted stock that has partly dead roots, in addition to damage from careless or ineffective wintering over there is also the problem of roots cooking in small pots during summer (this latter problem is why stock in small containers with roots good on one side and dead on the other is so prevalent; the frequency of nursery plants infected with water molds will also account for partly dead or small roots systems on many specimens).

There are some plants that will flower well into autumn, some that will already have a showy fruit crop, and some that will dazzle with the colour of its dying foliage. Much depends on climate. In warmer areas it is easy to find shrubs that will flower into November or later, but it is less easy to get stunning red foliage in warm zones. Winter Interest When the days are short and snow is on the ground, a few shrubs still offer a bit of colour in the garden. Bright red berries are the obvious choice for colour in winter, but there are fruit in other colours, attractive variegated evergreens, and even the occasional flowering shrub. Again, different climates force us to look at different shrubs for winter interest. In really cold winters, flowers are impossible and foliage is restricted to needles. In warmer areas, attractive foliage may be lost in a mass of green and berries may be hidden by leaves. Shrubs to Consider Here is a list of some shrubs that you might want to consider for autumn and/or winter interest.
