Maniltoa species

Hi folks,

I was wondering if anyone knows of a source of seeds of the native Maniltoa species from Queensland? This genus (one of a tetrad of so called hankerchief trees-others are Brownea, Amherstia and Saraca- owing to the manner in which newly emergent leaves are limp)is native mainly to northern Australia, Papua New Guinea and perhaps other parts of Melanesia.

Some like Maniltoa lenticillata are particularly outstanding both in floral and foliage display.

I believe that Equatorial Exotics has plants - I don't think the people with seed like to part with it.

Thanks, Ron. I believe it is a monogeneric plant. Heathen and Jerry, here's the site where I got my seeds from. Feel free to contact Jim West for seeds-he's great to deal with: http://www.ecuadorexplorer.com/guaycuyacu/fruits_1.html IMHO, $300.00 for this plant is utterly ridiculous, but I'm not sure if charging an inflated price is any worse than not willing to disclose a seed source. I have no qualms about sharing seed sources (and I can bet Jim West was also the seed source for this fellow). My philosophy is that if more people can avail of the rarer species, so much the better. Growing botanical rarities should be a truly democratic exercise, not the prerogative of a select few :-) ! Marcelo

It is a Maniltoa, probably lenticellata. The leaflets are a little small for M grandiflora and it looks like it has the weeping habit of lenticellata.

Hi The bank moved into a very upscale business addition and the landscaping went way over the top lol. probably a dozen plants that I can't identify and nobody to ask!!lol I googled the name you gave and found several pix of a white form Must be it though i've never seen another locally have heard of them . Thought they were flowers when I first noticed them. The S. American type turns a brilliant red in the spring concentrating on the outer leaves then ages to a bronze through summer and winter but is only semi deciduous. Was fairly sure it wasn't Davidia as I don't think they'll grow here?? Anyway thanks for the name Maniltoa seems to fit I'll have to get some pix of the landscaping WAY over the top Particularly impressed witha row of fan palms that the fronds are more white than green Have seen variagated forms but not to this degree. Anyway thanks for the name!! gary

The miss-naming of exotic plants as natives is not always the fault of the nurseries, though most nursery people have almost zero botanical knowledge and this does not help. There are actually two native species of Myrraya. Murraya ovatifoliolata occurs in dry or coastal rainforest from south Queensland to Cape York and to the Kimberley in WA. There is another one, a large and showy plant, that occurs on Cape York Peninsula and botanists insist on calling it Murraya paniculata though it does not look much like the exotic version. This is where mistakes come about. Someone will look up a herbarium list and it says Murraya paniculata occurs in Australia therefore the ones we are selling must be a native. Another one is Syzygium malaccense. The Australian one looks very little like the Asian one and the fruit are completely different. Even the common Weeping Fig (Ficus benjamina) occurs in Australia, but all the ones sold in nurseries are from Asia. Here is a link that might be useful: Rainforest Magic

There ia a medium sized Maniltoa lenticillata growing in the city square in Cairns. The "handkerchief" emergent leaves are quite striking. I walk past it regularly hoping to harvest some seeds, when the gardeners are not watching. I'll keep you in mind, Marcelo.

Marcelo, I just planted a fare few seed of M. lenticellata, beautiful tree and worthy of greater planting.
Try Yuruga Nursery on the web they maybe able to help, otherwise email me and Ill forward you concern to a friend of mine.
I know of a tree that recently fruited all over the place, but that was three weeks ago and the seed is prob old now, but see how you go.

This is just wonderful. Thank you both, Grant and Kris. This has been one of my holy grail plants for a while (the more unusual, uncommon and striking, the better). You guys are really helpful :-) !

Beware! most of the Maniltoas planted aound cairns are not the Australian one, they are Maniltoa mariettae from PNG, it has 6 leaflets whereas M. lenticellata has 8. All the ones planted in Forest Gardens are M. mariettae.

The seeds of these have a very short viability period !
Only a week , so would be very hard to ship to you Marcello. All of the plants that Yuruga have came from seed of the tree at Whyanbeel Arboretum , it was donated to Yuruga by the owner Peter Sargent.
