Not a flower

This is actually a new flush of leaves on Maniltoa lenticellata, Handkerchief Tree. A large tree looks like it's covered in flowers when the new leaf flush comes through. Mine is still a bit small for that effect yet.

This is just personal experience, although I seem to recall others reporting the same thing. When a young squash is only starting to produce females, it is still quite frail to produce viable fruit. If your largest leaves are only about 6" long, the plant is too young to support the fruit even if the weather is right and you have both male and female flowers. It's as though the plant hasn't had its first period and so it can't get preggers even if there has been major reproductive action (like yellow and black striped bees or buff-coloured bees). My first half dozen females all aborted. The flowers dried out, dropped and the baby zuke shriveled up and rotted. I, too, was alarmed by this the first time, but so far, this has been my experience with all four zukes I've had, and they all ended up producing. The information on plants not being able to support multiple fruit is valuable. I think zukes often start out looking like there is a production problem when there really isn't. It's one of those plants that takes a little patience. It's good to ask questions, but if you have squash that isn't behaving as you expected, it is best to give it some time. As long as the squash doesn't have any funky symptoms, like discoloration of leaves, spots and blotches or funky weird bugs on leaves or close to the main stem near the ground, patience is usually the best medicine.

actually, they probably will not ripen indoors, unless thee is at least some yellow on the skin of the fruit. (supposedly over 7 percent yellow is needed) obviously, you can try, also, some people use them green, and make a type of cole-slaw - salad green papaya salad / Som Tum https://www.google.com/search?q=green+papaya+salad -- i fight this every year, trying to get ripe fruit before winter. i am in New Orleans (zone 9) if i protect the tree with frost cloth, and plant it very close to the house (south-side), it will come back in spring, and i get 2 - 3 months of fruit in the fall. then...' i still have to compete with the critters. they even took a fruit off the tree when i put a sock around it... LOL i am guessing my neighbor with find a sock in his yard somewhere... 2 plants next to the house, with evergreens on the side i chop the top few inches a couple times a year when young to keep them short.

Mantis - The first seedling does resemble Judy's Jewel. The problem with Judy's Jewel is that it's always been short in my garden with with scapes between 20-23 inches. I would be this seedling will develop even taller scapes than 29 inches in the future. The scapes on Men in Black are rebloom scapes that didn't have time to bloom in the fall. So the buds on those are the result of the drought. Men in Black usually has bud counts in the mid teens here. Debra

They are showy, but the flowers are less conspicuous. I think most people grow them for the new leaf display rather than the flowers.

Thanks for this post . My bank has what I believe ,is one of these though the leaves are much more white.. Driving me crazy for an ID lol There is a S. Am. specie that has similar growth habit but have been unable to locate a name gary

Gary, I've seen these with emergent leaves almost white. Also seen photos of them fairly red or dark pink. Seems a bit of variation isn't unusual. There are also a few South East Asian trees that do something simlar, but I don't know of any South American ones, so can't help with a name.

The bank moved into a very upscale business addition
and the landscaping went way over the top lol. probably a dozen plants that I can't identify and nobody to ask!!lol
I googled the name you gave and found several pix of a white form Must be it though i've never seen another locally have heard of them . Thought they were flowers when I first noticed them.
The S. American type turns a brilliant red in the spring concentrating on the outer leaves then ages to a bronze
through summer and winter but is only semi deciduous.
Was fairly sure it wasn't Davidia as I don't think they'll grow here??
Anyway thanks for the name Maniltoa seems to fit
I'll have to get some pix of the landscaping WAY over the top Particularly impressed witha row of fan palms that the fronds are more white than green Have seen variagated forms but not to this degree.

The S. Am I was referring to is Browniopsis disepala also called a "handkerchief tree" The emergent foliage is spotted with deep red. Native to Ecuador Has a similar growth habit but colors are MUCH different gary
