Clay on limestone

Anyone else gardening in heavy clay on top of limestone?

I went to my future DIL's new place yesterday and although she is only 30 minutes away from me her soil is obviously very different. I could tell by the height of the bottlebrushes and Jacarandas near her garden. It has brought home it is certainly more difficult for me to get my lush looking garden in heavy clay on limestone. I am trying to improve the soil but can't dig very deep.

I asked the local councils for a list of indigenous plants to this areas and from the list I can see not many trees originally grew here. It was mainly coastal very dry scrub land and the limestone making things more difficult. Well at least I know why some of my trees donÂt seem to grow very tall and grow slowly :-)
