I have weedmat under decomposed granite (road sand) as paths in my vegie garden. I am sorry to tell you I think it was a waste of money. I think I have just as much work now as I did before. I have used a product called Pathweeder on my gravel drive which I have found extremely successful. It keeps the weeds away for well over a year. I only use it every 3 years and in between times I spot spray with kerosene or glyphosate. You have to be extra careful using Pathweeder that there is not any run-off onto lawns or garden beds because it work just as well there! I am thinking of using it on my vegie garden paths as well, because I have raised beds and I don't think it will be a problem.

Again, I don't know what pigweed is, but I have used weedmat between my garden beds - which are weedmat width :-) Anything that seeds ontop puts its roots down through the weedmat and can be difficult to pull out. The weed mat is topped with shredded eucalyptus leaves and wood, from trees we have trimmed. It was very effective initially, but it is starting to annoy me, and if I was doing it all again, I would simply shave it close with the mower, and put very thick layers of newspaper, topped with the same topping.

I found it a waste of money too.

When we bought our present home the previous owners put weedmat & scoreia on every garden, it was riddled with couch & it took us many weeks to clean it all out I would never use weedmat or scoreia in a garden even on pathways where we left it the grass seeds wash into the path & it is a pain to have to always weed it out, as for pigweed we have one that is known by that name but different to yours we find if we keep pulling it up before it sets seed we have control, yours looks like a weed that grows in waterways & it keeps growing from brocken pieces maybe if you can keep it as dry as possible it might weaken & you can get on top of it goodluck

Sorry, Marion, I don't like it for either on top of or under garden beds so am biased against trying it on paths. The pigweed has a pretty weak root system, hasn't it? I know this isn't what you were chasing but my favourite path for vege areas is deep sawdust, among other things the weeds scuff out easily.

Thanks everyone, we will save the money and buy a bigger hoe by the looks of it.
It is very easy to pull out, but just seems to be there all the time, every time it showers more comes up.
It would be wonderful to find a use for it and then it would just die out !!!!!! Maybe.

I personally don't like the idea of weed mat either on paths or garden beds. I know that there are differing opinions about it but I believe that matting can deprive soil of oxygen and other nutrients. It can also be expensive if you have a large area to do. For paths I use yates once a year path weeder.(use sparingly) and for the beds a nice thick layer of mulch does well.

In some areas we used weed mat, and I don't think it was worth it. Other areas are done with 6 or 8 sheets of newspapers and a handful of blood and bone under that if it's a flower garden. A nice redgum mulch on top lasts a while. In the veggie garden, we used newspapers and decomposed granite, but the weeds still come up in that. I've just been cleaning up in the garden and the couch grass is invading the granite paths. I've bought some Fusilade - as soon as I work out the right rate of application - look out Couchie.

never thought it would grow so thick as to be a "weed".many many moons ago eating pigweed saved me.imagin eight people isolated on a cattle station by floods for many many weeks' plenty of meat but not much else,I used to eat pigweed like the pioneers of that country did.the others thought I was mad.funny thing though I was the only one that did'nt end up with Berri berri.still pick at it when it appears in the veggie patch.

Paddy, you are welcome to it but I think we are talking about 2 different pig weeds.
The one in our vegrtable patch is the one we used to call Black Pig Weed when it came up in the paddocks and cultivation.
The one you are talking about is the more succulent type with the little yellowish greenish leaves. Is it ?
I remember the Headmistress of the Boarding School I went to in Charters Towers told us she often ate Pig Weed, you can imagine the snickers of a lot of schoolgirls can't you.
