It would be very helpful to know what zone you garden in because the quality or intensity of light can have a bearing on how much sunlight a rose needs to thrive. Climbing Peace is a rose that requires lots of patience. It takes quite a long while (several years) to settle in and to produce the growth that, in turn, promotes bloom production. Because it's so slow to mature, I feel that it's especially important to do whatever is necessary to keep Climbing Peace in good health. A rose that's healthy and well-foliated throughout each growing season will naturally mature more rapidly. As long as they're well watered and fed, Peace and Climbing Peace do well in dry climates like yours. One doesn't often see a well-grown Climbing Peace, but with patience and determination a Climbing Peace in full flush can defy description.

New Dawn is an excellent choice because nothing I know of can kill one. They are also a very pretty pink and smell nice, but have wicked thorns. Viking Queen is another stunning pink. Compassion is an amazing color like a sunrise (pink/yellow/orange) that I had to have. Climbing Peace is beautiful and fragrant as are the others I mentioned. I put a link at the bottom for Help Me Find, a site I couldn't live without. You can do searches for roses and find a lot of info on them including what other people think about their ease of care and performance. At the top of the search box there is a tab to Advanced Search where you can tell it to look for climbers. Then when you pick one at the top of the rose info are tabs showing more pictures and RATINGS which tell you what others think. Put them where they will get a lot of sun (6 hours is best) Make sure you put a lot of good quality compost in the big wide, deep (not just big enough for the plant) hole you dig (ask the plant specialist where you buy your roses) fertilize with a good product (you can get tips here) and water regularly and deeply. I swear it's the pine straw. My knockouts are just starting to bud. They're the only ones I've planted so far. But from Cameron's website/yard, I've got a solution. Red roses with purple lavender. I think I'll mulch that area with pine straw.

Becky, I think I read a little about the history last night. I am going to go back and re-read. The rose beside Peace is Madame Isaac Pereire. It has always been by favorite due to the wonderful fragrance that just seems to surround you as soon as you walk out onto the porch. I obtained Peace quite by accident. I had ordered a rose , which I cant remember which one now offhand, from some company such as Michigan bulb or maybe Springhill. But after it bloomed I realized it was the wrong one. It wasnt an impressive bloom, but I just didnt bother complaining. Now I am glad I didnt. Check out this other old red rose on the other side of my porch. I dont even know who it is, but it is beautiful this year as well. They all look so full of bloom this yr.Where the Peace was on the left of the steps, this bed is on the right of my steps. This bed is getting overgrown and messy, and needs some work. We are planning on starting to pull all these shrubs in front since they are getting so large and hubby is getting tired of trimming them. I would love to put in a nice cottage garden bed, but hubby likes the look of lots of mulch or rock around the plants.
