Dog pee

Can someone tell me if dog or cat wee kills plants especialy herbs? I know it doent kill winter tattagon because mine seeems to grow wonderfuly. We dont have a front fence and a few of the neighbourhood dogs have night time social meetings on my lawn. My neighbours tell me there dogs love to pee on my plants and a couple of herbs have gone black and died. (peenyroyal mint & aloe vera)ihave orange jasimine hedges about 50 cm high that dont seem to grow any bigger and I know the dogs love to pee on them. If only people would not let their dogs roam the streets!

I sympathise with you. Dog pee will kill plants, it certainly kills grass.

You need to voice your objections to the dog owners, or put up a fence, its not very neighbourly of people to let their animals wander all over your property.

my dog pees and poos all over the garden - though mostly on the mulch - and I let him get away with it because the smell seems to keep the neighbopurhood cats out of the yard. Any cat that is stupid enough to have wandered into the yard during the day has learnt that little nuggett is a lot quicker than he looks and has a nasty bite. I've encouraged him to chase the cats - which is a bit of a problem if we come across one on our walks.

He's surprised me recently - he's associated the magpies and kookaburras as birds She Who Must Be Obeyed wants in the yard and no longer chases the birds.

Keep the dog pee and poo if you want to keep cats out of the yard.

talk to your vet.. get one of the products like bitter apple .... go out and spritz all the bushes on the grass side ... just one spritz per plant ... put the dog on the leash ... inside the back door.. spray them a mouthful ... i did it to myself first.. its safe.. they will go thru the peanut butter on the palette thingee.... its hilarious,.,. then walk him to every bush ... and watch him shy away from each.. and give them a stern .... and loudish NO ... and a slight tug on the collar .... next time out.. spritz the mouth again.. and say no ... etc.. ad nauseum ... soon enough.. you wave the container at the dog.. his ears go down.. he looks at you sheepishly .. and puts his head down .. you say NO ... and let him out.. then watch from the window... and i bet my shiny nickle.. he wont go near any scented bush ... if he does.. back tot eh leash ... and walk him around.. until he does his biz.. where you allow .... perhaps.. leave a mature tree unsprayed.. so he can do it there ... lets be clear.. you are the problem in the equation... he is doing.. what dogs do... its your job to train him ... using the product.. and voice ... and if you are watching from the back door... and he looks back ... as he is lifting a leg ... yell your NO.. and wave the bottle.. and he will scoot away ... its the pavlovian system ... but as avoidance.. good luck ... a well trained dog.. is a shear joy.. it is a bonding experience.... he will relish the time spent with you.. and come to respond to voice alone .... just dont give up .. i mean really it took the kids almost 3 years to stop peeing in their pants... but i bet you can train a dog inside 30 days .... ken

Looks like pee to me. Last season my pup would hit two of mine near everyday on his way out...not the full-on morning hose, but his marking hits. My pencil holly is another favorite target but i arranged a few large rock on its exposed side and my pup cannot get close enough to get the footing to mark it. This year i've trimmed the lower drooping leaves of my front door maples out of reach. Never affected the trees but mine are much older. Just the leaves suffer. Unsightly. Cut those leaves off and if the pup is caught in the act, give the maple a flush of water from a hose. I do the same when they use the front lawn. Most mornings i run out briskly with them and trot to the side yard where we have a large mulch area that is a designated potty area. They will follow me before peeing in all the wrong places. One trick i use on the shady side of my house where i have hostas, to avoid deer damage, is a few 2x2 wooden stakes, (3 works in that spot), 2 feet above ground. I ran some clear thick fishing line across and around a couple times like a pea trellis formation. Invisible and seems to spook them. Also works well for us as hose guides. May go to three feet tall soon since it has worked so far... My old fella peed on a new nine-bark shrub straight from the nursery last weekend still in the pot...that edge of leaves soon looked just like yours. Young pup #2 is a girl, ; )

Sorry but I don't think you can do much for them now. Watering down with water very quickly is the only way.

What do you do if the dogs are your own, peeing on your own plants and killing them?

aisummers you are never going to train other people's animals not to go where you don;t want them to, the only thing you can do is take precautions like fencing off your herbs or if they are in pots, posibly raising them higher off the ground, on old tree stumps.
Pos your own dogs can be trained to go where you want them to, or discouraged from going where you don;t want, but it takes patience and you have to be round a lot at first to catch them in the act and say a big no.
