Fort Pond Native Plant Nursery

Took a nice drive out today to Fort Pond Native Plant Nursery out in Montauk, LI. Its just six miles from the very end so it was quite a haul, even from Nassau County. I had never been there before, even though I found the website last Fall. They have other things besides only natives but they so recommend natives to people whenever possible. Anyway, nice place with some interesting items.

I bought a hugh clump of Switch Grass, a smaller clump of mini Cattails and a fabulous Viburnum Winterthur. The Viburnum is covered in bloom clusters and such a full shrub with the most gorgous green leaves. I had really gone to hopefully get the grass but just couldn't pass up the shrub. Another thing is that this is a first for me in which I bought items for which I actually had a spot picked out waiting for them. Usually I just buy something I just had to have and then run around the yard when I get home trying to find a good spot for my new find!!!

I'm glad to hear about your good experience. I'm interested in native plants and have been contemplating making that long trip for a while. Maybe I'll make that my fall planting destination.

Since I start most of my natives from seed I am not as up to speed on buying plants as I would like to be, but for seed I order from Prairie Moon Nursery in Winona. They do not have a store there. The web site is below. They also carry plants. I have gotten a few bare root plants from them. I shopped at land scape alternatives when they were in St. Paul and they have nice plants. They moved in 2005 and I haven't been there since they are in the St. Croix Valley. http://landscapealternatives.com/index.php The other one I have heard of is Out Back Nursery and Landscaping, Inc in Hastings. Sadly, I don't quite have enough room for 100 plants. :) Razorback, That's a great list...and I have most of them as marginals and the water lily. I love them all. I did find that Hornwort or coontail (Ceratophyllum demersum)is a native floating plant and can usually be purchased. Water buttercup (Ranunculus aquatilis)is another native, but nearly impossible to buy. I also got some great suggestions from the aquatic plant guy at the IN DNR. Just pasting his email below: "For floating plants the best options would be spatterdock (Nuphar advena) (actually kind of emergent since the leaves don't float on the water's surface), white water lily (Nymphaea odorata), and watershield (Brasenia schreberi). Spatterdock and water lily can sometimes densely ring a pond although spatterdock has the greater tendency. Watershield is a cute little plant, but you generally only see it in the SE part of the state, I also don't think it is much used in trade. Most of the water lilies for sale are non-native species. Most of the spatterdock for sale is probably Nuphar lutea, a Eurasian species. Most people do not look to plant submersed species since they are usually already present in most lakes and they usually show up pretty quickly after a pond is built. People typically are more interested in killing the submersed species than they are planting them. It are the water garden types of folks that get told that for their water gardens they need to put in an "oxygenator" plant. They then think that ponds need these same things. Probably the most common native submersed species in trade are coontail or hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) and native elodea (Elodea canadensis). Coontail can definitely become a major nuisance and sometimes elodea can as well. My main tip for those thinking they need to add submersed species is to wait. If conditions are suitable for submersed plant growth the plants will show up soon. If conditions are not good (turbid water, little shallow water, poor substrate), no matter how much planting, one will probably not get much growth. Unfortunately, invasive species tend to do well in the conditions that do not favor our natives."

Thank you, Everyone, for your kind words! I was just a little stressed out earlier. I have all of my plants labeled and boxed up into April's car. Now, it's time for a little Kahulua and Cream! Tina, I put you down for the last Perilla! Erin, so glad that you can come! I think that a bag of worms would be really cool. Maybe you can do a little, tiny talk about how to raise them.....! Like Debbie said, just check at my table tomorrow to find something for trade. Rebecca, thanks for posting your phone number. April and I will be leaving at 8:00 in the morning (right after I stop and buy the donuts! We can never take a road trip without donuts!) Hopefully we won't have any trouble finding our way. Lol I'd never ever deliberately plant yaupon (ilex)!!! It's native here and we battle it constantly, it grows into thickets and takes over! I am constantly amazed when I see it sold in nurseries. Random tidbit- I have a horse that has decided she likes to eat it- and it's a natural source of caffiene, stronger than tea leaves. I'm very concerned she's going to fail a random drug screen at one of our competitions (yes, they drug test the horses).

Yeah nice place huh. I went there last year for the first time. I live in Suffolk but I am still almost 50 miles from there. Also check out Peconic River Herb Farm. You can make a nice day of it. They are just north of the LIE exit 71 I think. Another great nursery right on the side of the Peconic River. You can even picnic on the river on their property if you would like. The woman who owns the farm seems very proud of her offerings and they often seem to have the newest cultivars available. I just got a couple of heritage bircg trees there for $15 each. Oh and the new endless summer hydrangea a month ago.

I found Peconic River Herb Farm last year and made two trips out there last summer. Haven't gotten there this spring yet but am deffinately going to go. Fort Pond was just very far so I will probably only do one trip a year out there. It was really nice out there on the Eastern end of Long Island though, had a nice day.

Yeah I love it out here. I am about 20 minutes to the Peconic Herb Farm. There is another nursery on the north fork but I have yet to visit there.

I'm gldd I do not have a van to fill!

Thanks for the information, sounds like a great destination point for a trip!! I used to live close to the east end and miss it very much, Shelter Island is one of my favorite places on the planet, the nature preserve there is wonderful!!! There are some new B and B's opening out east if anybody wants or can make a weeekend out of the trip, its another world out there!

Thanks for the link Rita. I'm out at Montauk at least 6 times a year and never visited that place. I did stop by a place in Amagansett last month. I forget the name of this nursery but they have a HUGE wistera growing out front that cover's the nursery roof. It's just beautiful and I loved strolling through thier back gardens.

I fould the switchgrass, 'Shenendoah' today at Cheap Sams. I tred to get this one at Fort Pond this Spring, but they didn't have it.

Haven't gotten back out to Fort Pond since my first trip but now its Fall planting time so maybe I will get a chance to do another trip.

The Switchgrass has stood up to the Winter really well. Even when we had the snow, it was nice and upright and the seed heads still look good over the brown foliage. Most of the actual seeds seem to be gone though. Don't know if they fell off or were eaten by birds over the Winter.
