Bromeliads

Are these in the cacti section? I can't find any information about them. Have been dividing some,but have no idea of name or realy how I should repot them.

Can anyone suggest a good book,that describes the various types,growing conditions etc. Judie

Bromeliads are a huge plant Family. They occur primarily in the Americas with many being epiphytic (live on trees) in rain soaked jungles, however they also occur in a range of habitats that include the harshest of deserts. There are therefore succulent bromeliads, so these are not off topic here. There are also 'Ant-plant and Carnivorous 'Broms' even at least one species that is both Carnivorous and an Ant-plant. It is the rather unique trichomes that allow these fascinating plants to inhabitat such diverse habitats.
There are a number of excellent books in most good bookstores and Societies dedicated to their culture.

I id find the name of the particular one I needed. Aechmea, we have been dividing it,into many,needed to be able to tell my student its name and what to do with it. Thanks for the help. Judie

Rainforest Flora in Torrance has a huge selection of Tillandsia and also some bromeliads. The best place is the Bromeliad Society Convention, but this year it will be in Sarasota, Florida. I went to one in San Diego, and it had the hugest selection of bromeliads I've seen in one place, other than Brazil or Costa Rica. Most of Home Depot's bromeliads are not meant for full sun and are sold primarily as house plants. However, I have grown quite a few from there inside my pergola, which has a closed top.

Oldmangroot, I am so sorry. I've gotten into broms, too, this past couple years and I hate when something goes wrong. I had some beautiful neos planted at the base of one of my back yard oaks. I had some branches pruned last year and the guy who did the pruning was walking all over them. I'm amazingly spineless when someone is trying to help me - I didn't say a word - I knew he had to put his feet somewhere. But the broms did not fare well. They were pretty torn up. I lifted the broms from the ground and potted them up so I could provide better control of their environment and some tender loving care. My purpose for keeping them now is solely for the PUPS!!!! Their cups do not hold water, so I have to make sure to water them frequently. It's all about keeping them alive and as healthy as possible to harvest those pups! Look how awful these look. First brom. It's looked this way since November: Goal is to save these two babies (above)! Second brom: Goal is to save these two babies (above)! Because they look terrible and also don't retain water well, they live here in the shade at the base of other plants. (Look down into the middle of the photo): Here's what my pups will look like - why I want to save them: As we move into the heat of the summer, make sure you monitor whether or not your damaged broms are getting enough moisture and if either is really a loss, just work on keeping them alive to bloom and give you some pups. Inserting bromeliads into tree branch cavities

Nah- those tree's can take much water,anyplace. What will happen is the original plant will root to the tree- and after that pups will attach to the outside. You won't even see the cut in 2 or three years time. All Brom by then.

It looks like a Neoregelia of some sort. I have a lot of those that I've not identified. Here's one When I bought it, it was listed as "Assorted Neoregelia" but I can tell that it is a miniature because it stays small, and it tends to branch out. There is an outside chance that it is a Vriesea, but the shape of the leaves looks more like Neoregelia. You will be able to tell the difference when it blooms. It is a lot easier to identify any bromeliad when it blooms.

Hi Judie. There is a Bromeliad forum, it's not an Australian forum but there must be loads of people there who can help you. You could also try the Aussie Tropical Plants forum too.

Hi Judie, I am by no means an athourity on Broms, but I did read that they will not tolerate lime. They must have an acid soil. I actually bought a bag of Azalea and Camelia potting mix and added a bit of sand to it and they are doing very well. The Azaleas like the acid soil so I figured it would do the trick,I added the sand just in case of too much moisture was retained. Mine seem to be doing very well in this mix.I cant remember where I read about the fact that they like acid soil. Hope this a help for you. Regards, Joy.
