neighbor's tree roots and branches

Help! I'm doing fine with my own garden but my problem is with my neighbors on both sides of my lot. They both have trees right up to my property and guess where the roots and branches are hanging and growing. One tree is a Norway maple and those roots are real thick and thirsty. I cleaned them out once and found that they came back larger and thirstier! What' a girl to do?!! Any advice would be helpful. I also have a Norway maple in my own yard that I would love to get rid of. Any thoughts?

In the city I believe the guidelines state that you can go up and down on your properity line and remove any obstruction in your path.. I guess after abrading the roots in your yard you can dose them with any recomended treatment.. Gordon

I would be cautious. You can trim anything that is overhanging your property but you cannot do anything that will cause the tree to die.

In general it's the big maples that overwhelm small spaces, to get away from that you have to go to small-growing species. If the "yard" in question is a lawn, fill between (and a little over) the roots with topsoil and raise the lawn to meet the new level created by the tree. Or convert the area invaded by the protruding roots to a mulched bed. Or, if you don't need the shade offer to pay to have the tree cut down and the stump ground out.

you have gotten a lot of good advice already, my place would be what I want and my morals..personally. and also their attitudes..i guess. if they are demanding you fix it cause their dogs are no longer contained..that is not right. It is their dogs that they wish to contain, if your animals or livestock were roaming in to their yard and doing damage then they would have some right to complain, but if their tree damages a fence on the property line..why do they have a right to complain in the first place. are there survey markers..is the fence on the line or inside your side? when we had the property suveyed, we on purpose put our fence inside of the property line about 1/2" so that no portion of our fence was on the neighbor's property..thus it was OUR fence and we maintain it..if it is a shared fence then it should be equally shared by both properties, including expenses.. unfortunately people are responsible for the damage that their trees, or dogs, do to other people's property, however, the ICE may have been the damager not the tree..so it might have been the liable party. can't bill the ice or expect it to do repairs.. if the tree was dead or dying that is a different story..but if it was just storm damage, it was just that storm damage..either you or your ins are liable. if you don't trust someone else to fix it right or you want it done your way, then do it...make it clear to the neighbors it is not doable until the ground can be properly worked for the posts..that they can put up a temp restraint for their pets buy buying a few boards or some wire until it is fixed right.

We talked to 4 lawyers today, and they ALL said his lawsuit would be considered frivolous, and that his case would be thrown out. And none of them believe he will actually go through with suing us. One of them called the xmas guy an idiot for even considering suing. One lawyer said our case would be a "simple" matter to handle, only one day of work @ $750. I talked to him at length. Basically, he would say to dismiss the case against us since we made an agreement with the property owner, and if the son had any theoretical agreement it would only be with his parents. But I know this guy, and I have no doubt he will still sue us. We bought security cameras last night. They're expensive! Holy cow! Xmas guy was outside and walked to the property's edge and made a spectacle of himself watching dh put the backyard camera up. If he was trying to intimidate dh it did not work. Xmas guy also came over this morning and measured the tree trunks of only 5 trees, because the other trees are totally on our property. He didn't measure the tree lengths which I found surprising. He did take pictures. We just barely missed him, as we were outside 20 minutes before him measuring the lengths of the trees and taking more pics. We screen-grabbed his facebook page; he sells them for $6 a foot. 2 of the trees we cut were only 3.5ft tall! The others were around 7-8ft. What does he think he's going to get? Even if we pretend he's the property owner, then we would at least be entitled to half the value of the trees since 50% of each of the trunks was on our land. He would get less than $100 total. He'd be a schmuck for suing. One last thing, I talked to the building inspector this morning and he said xmas guy called him late last night (Sunday!) and screamed at him, and that he had to listen to xmas guy even though he was out of town visiting family. He said xmas guy doesn't have a case and not to worry. That's all I can update for now. Thank you for "listening". It means a lot. I was up all night last night worrying about being sued.

Graft branch from old apricot tree to new root stock.

I found several rootstocks for apricots. Cummins Nursery has a Mariana GF8-1 full size rootstock for Apricots, They 're $2.75 each. The shipping is $20 estimated when I added one to my cart. I bought apple rootstocks from them last year without problem. I checked Fedco, no apricots. I checked Willimette they have 3 varieties but only sell a 100 minimum. I didn't check at Grandpa's cause they wanted $45 shipping minimum last spring. You should order early, first of the year, once they run out they're out. They all seem to ship once and that's it. Fedco allows you to choose early or late, that's it. That sounds expensive, but if you buy a seedling it may cost you double that. Another thought I had was that since you're trying to save your tree and you've never done this before you should consider buying more than 1 rootstock. Even if you put two grafted trees in the same hole you've got a guarantee for only $2.75 more. I did 7 apple grafts last spring and all are doing fine. They all sent a shoot up from the tip of the scion and no other shoots, so I'm thinking you need to be careful of the top most bud. Growth varied from 4 inches to 30 inches. All the growth is whips, no branching. I also planted a couple of the rootstocks without grafting for backup trees. The M.111 (semi-full) grew about 4 foot, next to it an M.7 (semi-dwarf) grew about a foot. Google "whip and tongue" graft. You'll find video's and articles. I used a retractible safety knife and teflon plumbers tape which I had. I bought grafting tape on eBay for a few bucks which included shipping. I used the teflon tape instead of parrafin which you'll find in your supermarket if you ask for "gulfwax". I'd suggest you cut the bottom off a plastic half gallon milk jug make a hole in the center and use it for a finger guard. Good luck.

In my town you may prune back the branches that over hang your property line, but you may not do anything to the root systems as it will cause damage or death to the tree. Maybe talk to your neighbors about what they will be willing to do regarding this matter (if they are friendly).

Get an arborist in to see to the removal of the Norway maple on your property and then to prune away some of the branches that overhang from your neighbor's property.

It might be asking for trouble, but I wonder if you could ask your neighbors how they feel about their trees? If you explain to them that you love to garden and offer to pay for the removal of the trees that are right against the property line (and to bribe them with the season's first tomatoes), they might be receptive. An arborist might also tell you if there's a middle ground, like pruning both branches and roots on their trees every two or three years.

Our neighbors trees hung over our yard and dropped leaves everywhere, including our above ground pool. My husband nicely spoke to the neighbor. The first time she had a professional prune the (offending) branches. Then a couple years later, he asked her again. We split the cost of cutting down the tree and grinding down the stump. Fifty-fifty. What a nice lady.

a major problem with trees is root competition.
I have read in various gardening books that it's best treated by laying down about 5 overlapping layers of newspaper and putting a good 8 inches of soil on it. By the time that the tree roots get through the newspaper your plants have had a year and a half to get their own roots established. They will be better able to fend for themselves.
