ugly concrete patio

We told the concreter we wanted to tile the patio. We drew his attention to the damp proof course and termite mesh. Now we have an ugly grey thing stuck to the house with not enough space for the tiles.

Has anybody had concrete stenciling done? Although I've seen nice examples of it elsewhere I'm not sure it's right for us. Half the patio is in full shade and half gets a lot of sun so any fading would be uneven. And what's the maintenance like (eg, resealing?).

We really wanted the tiled look and that would also have had the advantage of being DIY. Often an amateur job gives a reasonable result for much less money and paying an "expert" gives a mediocre result at a high price accompanied by a lot of stress. I think there's a whole other thread here but I'll leave that for another time.

My garden is no longer my sanctuary from the troubles of life and any suggestions as to what I can do about this ugly blot on my landscape would be most appreciated.
