I'm pretty sure it's a Carex of some sort, but I can't ID the variety. Can you cut one of the flower stems and photograph both the stem and the flower head closeup? There are several varieties of Sedge which are semi-invasive in my garden. None of them are over a foot tall, and some decidedly shorter. They all have very fine foliage and flower profusely. I enjoy them as long as the flower stems remain green. When they start to brown up, I pull the plants to prevent them from re-seeding. I've used some of the longer flower stems/heads in fresh arrangements. They don't last long, but look good for a short time.

Hi Ann...I would start hardening them off now. Put them outside for an increasing amount of time each day, and after a couple of weeks, stick 'em in the ground. Ravenna Grass (Plume Grass) is a very sturdy plant, and will probably do just fine for you. I have 16 cells of it in one of the coldframes, but it hasn't started to sprout yet. Warm season grasses are just starting to germinate for me now. I've got a few Miscanthus and 2 Carex sprouting in the past couple of days.

I know it's going to be a hodgepodge to plants at first, but as I see what works (some items are just on order and not in place yet) and what doesn't I am hoping to really shape it into something cool. katob, I haven't added grasses:))---- I just didn't weed out volunteers except some where I didn't want them. I wanted to see how it would look and decided I like it filled in, its sort of designing itself up front, if I can call that a 'design' and get away with it. I've been eyeing it and realizing late winter is going to be a big job with cutting back and disposal, I'll definitely have to do it in stages. The Big bluestem are slow growing compared to most of the grasses. I lost some of the 4" starter ones I got from Santa Rosa Gardens last fall, come spring the whole thing was just 'gone' on 3 of them. The same thing happened the year before so these big bluestem's have been harder for me to get going than most kinds. I've noticed I get root damage from june bug grubs with some of the grasses, they don't look good or take off in spring so maybe thats what got the baby big bluestem's I ordered because they are cold hardy and I have good drainage. Its different than the doughnut hole you get in the center of grasses that need dividing, this is dead grass on the outside or a whole side is dead. Every time I have a grass that looks really punk in spring & isn't putting up much growth or part of it's dead, when I dig it out I discover most of the roots are gone and there's always a fat june bug grub in the soil which ticks me off and I squash it. I figured that's another good reason to let the grasses seed about. Maybe a grub ate some roots on yours and set it back some? They seem to attack my switch grasses a lot. I've dug out whole clumps and discovered the roots are eaten away all the way to the top in spots.
