Has anyone got some info. re. uses of common weeds - medicinally, cooking, etc. - does anyone know of any courses related to uses of weeds/herbs for medicinal purposes, i.e. making tinctures, compresses, etc. - I do recall a woman who had a book published on the above but cannot locate or remember title - any info. greatly appreciated. Paul

Some people would argue that all herbs are weeds. In fact, one common answer to the question 'What is a weed?' is 'It's a herb nobody has found a use for yet, or one which is growing where you don't want it'. You could check out any of the books by Tim Low, including 'Wild Food Plants of Australia'. It's basically discussing 'bushtucker plants' but many of them are considered to be weeds. The book includes a large bibliography, which could provide a further step in your search for information. However, Tim is famed for his knowledge of and uses of roadside weeds, and has published a number of books on the subject - he has his own website.

While I think that the "FAQ" as outlined by swanoir was presented tongue in cheek ('the humus'), many of the subsequent comments and/or links to threads that could/should be included in a FAQ were presented in a more serious tone. And maybe they do make sense as a foundation to a real LD forum FAQ. But I've also sensed something else in these comments that may contribute to the apparent lack of communication between new posters seeking advice and those that regularly frequent this forum and offer it. And that is that the long checklist provided by Miss R must be (or should be) answered in detail before posting. Well, of course not! But it is definitely something worth reviewing and giving some thought to. This checklist, or something very similar, is what most designers utilize when first meeting with a prospective client. It gives them a feeling for what the client wants to do with the property, how they intend to use it, what they hope to get out of it and how much effort (time/$$) are they are intending to put into it. Hopefully, reviewing an outline or checklist such as this could help to refine and focus some of those blank slate questions and even educate those new posters totally unfamiliar with the process the degree of complexity, the number of variables and exactly what is involved in the formulation of a landscape design. Even DIY landscape texts intended for the homeowner with no previous design or landscaping experience offer similar checklists to get one started thinking about the process. Obviously, this is overkill for those questions that are more issue-specific, but I think very appropriate for those that are much broader and far less focused.

Hi xminion, You may want to try posting to the herb forum, linked below. I don't know much about herbs, but here are some of my (uneducated) guesses anyway. Yes, I think that first, you will want to pull weeds. Then, it will depend what herbs are there. Some herbs are woody shrubs (rosemary, lavendar), and will survive for years, but may very well need pruning. Some herbs are perennials and can be left alone (with the exception of some mulch and compost), and others, like basil, are annuals that are probably way overgrown and should be pulled out. Funny! Though I suppose not at the time. I help manage an herb garden at the community garden where I have my veggie plot. Last year, I thought I'd put my basil over by the fence. First year I'd been there (or anyone else who was around), and it looked like a nice spot. Digging to prep/compost, I kept finding all these funny looking bulbs. Close to 6-7 dozen of them. Just starting out, I hated the thought of throwing them, but hated to have something toxic in the herb garden. Went to two different greenhouses and still couldn't identify. So, I threw them in a couple clumps at either end. Turns out.....sunchokes. Pretty darn good at choking out my basil! But, fun to play with. This year, I'll put the basil in a different spot where it doesn't have such competition for sun & water. And, thankfully I figured out my mislabeling before planting cold season broccoli--tomatillos really wouldn't make it here right now.

Thanks Tina, you are the best! The mangoes are almost finished, this has been a really strange year, there are very few left on the tree and mostly at the top... and I spotted a new 'eater' up there pecking away, a Woodpecker! there was more than one bird, couldn't believe my eyes....usually the mangoes last well into August but not this year... Cal shoveled lots of the mulch on Sun., there is no-way I'm going to get you doing that in spite of your generosity!! Terry is coming also now that the rain has let up..... I really love your herb-garden you are very creative, and your center-piece is lovely, do you plan to put water in it, or fill it w/plants? either way would be fantastic...keep us up to date w/more pics.... thanks, sally

I did a search for Tim Low and came up with pages of stuff. After wading through some of them I gave up.

she has a book on most medicinal herbs in oz,and she really knows her subject well.She aslo explains how to make tinctures as well.

My weed book is "Weeds - an illustrated botanical guide to the weeds of Australia, B.A. Auld and R.W. Medd Inkata Press, Melbourne 1987. It's a fantastic little book and one I use frequently.

Tim Low is apparently a founder of the Invasive Species Council. Am still searching for his own website but the list of links from the Invasive Species website (below) has links to information about weeds. Not quite the positive thing you're after, I suspect, but it might help some of the other posters in this thread ...

Try Pat Collins "useful weeds at our doorstep" - it's a great book that goes through 40 common weeds that you can either eat, or turn into creams, salves, or take as teas...
She also does a correspondance course on using plants as medicene.
