I've learned:

1. Whenever you go out to check your garden, bring clippers because something will invariably need a clipping. I think this was Fawnridge's advice.

2. If you have weeds, you don't have enough plants.

3. Some of the nicest people are on this forum. Generous with GOOD advice and plants, cuttings, seeds whatever you want. Florida gardening is not like any other place. We have questions that can only be answered by fellow Floridians who have been there and done that.

I think I have learned EVERYTHING here!

1. If you have weeds, call Kat!
2. Easy does it. Rome wasn't built in a day, neither is a great garden.
3. Have a plan. Big picture requires a plan, there is still room for just wing it and give it a try, too.
4. Enjoy what you have. Take time to smell the flower.
5. Share-both ideas, friendships and plants with others. The rewards are wonderful.
6. Enjoy yourself

First and foremost, I've learned that gardeners are the nicest and most generous people on the planet! After that, it's:

1. Don't just plant things...see if you can propagate them for gifts or trades with others.

2. Huge lawns are bad. Small lawns are better. No lawns are best of all. I knew it before, and confirmed it over and over again here, listening to what others had to say.

3. Do your research with new plants to be sure they are not invasive. Don't worsen the problem, no matter how pretty a plant is. If it is spreading through our woods and natural areas, don't plant it in your yard.

4. Forget about ever having a perfect garden. Forget about ever being "done" with it. Gardens are living, evolving things, and will always be changing.

5. Plant some things you can EAT. Fresh fruits, veggies and herbs are much better than store bought, even if they end up costing you triple for labor, fertilizer, and potting soil. They are worth it.

Of course, there is much, much more. Hardly a day goes by that I don't learn something new and interesting here. The collective knowledge in this group is amazing. I don't know anywhere else where one could find so much practical advice and information specifically related to Florida.

And on that note, BIG HUGS to ALL of you!

This thread is so entertaining! I need to stop on this side more often. Each one of you has a fun and unique point of view. I agree with everyone else about #5! Then I read #6 and laughed my butt off. Then came #7. I am just sitting here chuckling. Because I'm guilty, guilty, guilty lol. And good to see you again Sherri, been wonderin' why I hadn't seen you post lately. Gardenrod, All of us are still learning. I say often that I learn something new here every single day and it is so very true. As Diane said, we have an amazing group of people here. My attitiude is that we are much stronger/better prepared for anything as a group than any one of us ever could be alone. Besides that, who else understands our gardening obsession better than other folks similarly afflicted? Diane, I've always done the cold treatment too, but not really as part of a deliberate plan. Rather, my tiny tomato seedlings get the cold treatment when they are kicked off the lighted seedstarting shelf and moved out to the back porch to make room for other seeds I need to start. Before I started moving the plants out to the porch while they were very small, they got big and lush indoors but didn't adapt as easily once they were moved outdoors to harden off. Clearly, they'd had it easy for too long. Now that they are exposed to cooler temps earlier, they seem tougher and hardier even though not as tall and lush. Maybe this year I'll proceed with a plan and move them out when they "should be" put out for cold treatment instead of just haphazardly doing it when the plant shelf is too full and I have the urge to grow more seeds. Chandra, As others so aptly pointed out, a certain amount of exposure at a young age benefits tomatoes in ways that we may not fully understand. Plants exposed to cold treatment at a certain stage seem to produce more heavily and to perform better later on. By contrast, peppers (and I think from my observations this applies a bit more to hot peppers than to sweet peppers) that are exposed to cooler temps earlier in the year can remain stunted for a long time and unproductive for the entire season. I used to transplant peppers out into the ground at about the same time I transplanted tomatoes. I struggled for years to make sense of why my pepper plants looked fine and grew well but didn't produce heavily until fall. The tomatoes were producing just fine, so I knew there was something I didn't know and didn't understand about the conditions pepper plants needed for optimal performance. After learning about the pepper plant/temperature connection, I started holding my pepper plants inside longer and waiting to transplant them out a couple of weeks later than the tomato plants. The difference in yield was impressive. Now it is just a part of my routine. I haven't done objective testing with a control group, but I'd say that by holding the pepper plants inside longer and planting them only after the weather/soil are at the temps they like, I am harvesting twice as much as before, and I am harvesting 4 to 6 weeks earlier than before. Last year, the pepper harvest began in earnest so early that it surprised even me. My plants went into the ground in early May, and I was harvesting sweet peppers and jalapenos in mid-June. It probably did help the hot peppers somewhat that we were hot earlier in the season than usual since they thrive on heat. I just pulled out my harvest record book from last year and I harvested 10 lbs. 2 oz. of jalapeno peppers on June 15th. That is the largest early harvest of hot peppers that I've ever had. If I was not already convinced that planting peppers late was a useful technique, last year's June harvest convinced me. I use two fans for circulation in the guest room where I keep my seed starting shelf. The ceiling fan stays on 24/7 and then I have an oscillating fan I use to toughen up plants. The light movement of the circulating air helps the plants develop stronger, stockier stems. You know, the same thing is true of trees. Young trees that are tightly staked so they cannot bend much in the wind are weaker over their lifetime than trees that were not tightly staked or that were not staked at all. With the trees, the early exposure to real wind helps build stronger wood. By exposing our tomato plants to circulating air while they are inside, we are preparing them better for the stronger winds they'll be exposed to outdoors. As for the effect of soil temperatures on germination of seeds, the most reliable data I've ever seen is that on Tom Clothier's website. I'll find it and link it. Using his chart, you can see exactly which temperatures give the best germination rates. However, most of us have to start seeds of some types a bit earlier than the optimum temperature on his charts because we're in a constant race to "make" our garden grow and produce before the high summer heat shuts it down. Carrots, for example, sprout quickly in very warm to hot soil, but grow poorly in it. So, we have to settle for lower germination rates and slower germination times so that our carrots can grow during the time when soil and air temperatures are optimal for them. Finally, much of what I know/understand about soil and air temperatures and their effect on vegetable plant growth and production I learned from Dr. Cotner's book. Before his book came out, I understood that some crops go into the ground earlier and some later but didn't truly understand exactly how temperatures affect growth and performance. I still have to refer to his book to doublecheck the temperatures various veggies need, but at least now I know enough to check the book for his recommendations instead of blindly following the calendar, or just "guessing" that a particular vegetable can go into the ground at a certain time. 4. Planting 3 or 4 kinds of morning glories on the arbor look as lovely as you envisioned. But seed collecting - well, that's going to be problem....if you want to keep the seeds from the BLUE plant separate from the seeds from the PINK. And NOW you have to explain to garden visitors why there are little pieces of colored ribbon tied all over the vines.... Hear, hear. I use bread ties which are decidedly more "pokey" compared to ribbon. I'm sick of apologizing for everyone getting snagged. Now I suggest that they bypass the arbor and take the long way around. Which leads me to: 1. Stop ignoring the sizes listed on plant labels and seed packs. If something says it will grow to 10ft, assume that it will and only plant one. Nobody needs 50ft of Morning Glorys to fill an arbor "nicely". 2. When you give extra plants away they then belong to the recipient who can do with them what they want. They are allowed to plant them in unsuitable (and laughable) conditions, slowly kill them in any manner in which they are good at or even launch them into space if that's what they want to do. Until someone creates the RSPCP (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Plants) you cannot take legal action against them and you should just relax. 3. Cut as many bouquets as possible and give them to everyone you know (including the cats). 4. Your garden may not be picture perfect. You might have planted orange, blue and pinks together, caterpillars have eaten off half your flowers and there are yellow leaves and floppy plants everywhere, but you know what? All that mess is much more rewarding than having miles of perfectly green antiseptic grass with perfectly spaced cone shaped shrubs planted around an empty flagpole. This is a great topic btw. :)

Vermicomposting since November 2015. I've learned that it's important not to let drain flies get established in your bin because it is almost impossible to get rid of them once they are. They can live on the bacteria in vermicompost, just like earthworms, and for some reason there tends to be no earthworm cocoons in the bin when drain fly larvae are present. The larvae can survive for 17 days and the flies start laying eggs within hours after they emerge. I eventually got rid of them by placing a window screen on my bin, killing the drainflies on the walls of the bin daily, and dumping an excessive amount of cardboard bedding on the bin. I've also learned that I can make the worms attack their bedding immediately by moistening it and sprinkling milk powder evenly on it. I think it's because the sugar in the milk (lactose) dissolves and is absorbed by the bedding. It drives them crazy.

Hummm...I have learned a lot, but I think I received even more in plants!
I was able to cut some time off from orchids and started planting Florida friendly plants
I got more butterfly plants and now have tons of butterflies
I stopped reading as much on the orchid forum...people are much nicer here!!!

I have stopped reading the Orchid forum other than occasionally because I find so many problems and cures don't apply here. Lack of humidity - what's that?
I started reading the Palm forum and I am incredulous at the lengths folks will go through to grow a palm in northern climates. There are tears of happiness when a new spear appears.
The knowledge of this group is amazing. Whenever I have a question - this is the first place I turn to.

I wonder if we could convince Kat to take a traveling weeding position. SHe'd travel the state pulling weeds. She could stay at the people's house so there'd be no big mortgage to pay. Pay by hour, the pound of weeds hmmm

I have learned that Florida gardening is so specialized that most of what is in books doesn't apply to my zone.

Florida Gw'rs are the best source for practical garden knowledge because they've "been there done that" and can save me time, trouble and disappointment.

This is the best forum or group of people I've even met because never a cross word is spoken--only encouragement and gentle help.

I learned what was eating my tomato plants (tomato fruitworm)and how to organically get rid of it(BT).
I learned why my tomato plants were turning yellow and dying (TYLC virus).
Lots more I just can't remember all I've learned because I know it now. :)

First off, there isn't enough room or space to list all the positives.
Everyone is so helpful and so fast with their very knowledgeable replies. (and photos, links, etc...) I don't think there are any sites on the Internet that come even close to this forum. It's worth it's weight in gold for all the guidance I've received. I find the "Tropicals" forum to be a close 2nd.
I'd even go as far as saying that it's worth paying a membership to become a lifetime member. But, I never said that, ok?
I do have to say however, that I've turned on ALOT of good friends to this site and they are forever grateful, as am I.
Finding this forum is almost like winning the lottery, although I'm still working on that...........

I have learned that there are many other people in this world that have gardening in their soul as I do. I have a place to share when I spy a beautiful flower or view in my garden. Other people that will understand the joy in it and that will give me a pat on the back for my garden work! I have learned that there are many others that watch and love nature's creatures, and that will even work to sustain them and keep them near. Of course, the practical gardening and Florida gardening knowledge that I've gained is immeasurable. When my garden doesn't look good, I rely on other's photos to keep me dreaming and inspired. You guys are my gardening family of sorts. Thanks!

For me, it's quicker to list the things I HAVEN'T learned on the Florida Forum!

I love how plant names are revealed so quickly when we post our pictures of our mystery plants. Because of my location and situation, I can't just browse the plant departments and nurseries to learn the identities of stuff I see in the landscape. You Garden Webbers are awesome at helping, not only with names, but I also read tips and advice on the plants we inquire about.

I'd like to take this time to say Thank You. Someday I hope to be able to show my appreciation and spend more time with all my wonderful new friends!

I learned how to garden all over again, as it is so much different then gardening in NJ. I learn there are so many more plants I can grow here then I ever realized. And like Anna said I learned there are others out there that have gardening in the souls. They understand my pride at a 30ft royal poincianna I grew from seed that was full of blooms this year. They understood when I cried when my jacaranda went down from Jeanne or when I cried when the state took my healthy citrus trees. Only other gardeners can understand this pleasure or pain. :o)

GW has really opened my eyes to plants and practices I would not have enjoyed otherwise. For years, my only thought was "Fruit trees."

I used to snicker at folks who let "bugs" eat up their plants in otherwise pristine gardens. Then the kind folks here taught me that Caterpillers need to eat too, and now I have a butterfly-filled property, with host and nectar plants.

I used to not appreciate Crotons or "get" the dopey idea of "Foliage" plants. Heck, green is green, what's the difference? After hanging out here, I started to notice the many shapes/colors/textures of foliage, and to see how they worked to add interest in a garden. The photos shown on our forum are very inspiring!

I learned that fruit trees look quite nice with flowers or contrasting plants grown with them.

I learned that Bamboo is stunning, and that some folks have a true eye for design/layout of gardens, which I don't have.

I met the nicest, most generous people here!

From Katkin, I learned that a Heliconia can be chopped up, and it bounces right back! (G)

Now, if Treefrog would just share his methods of growing such gorgeous, healthy veggies, that would be the icing on the cake!

I have learned this obsession I have with making things grow is not unique. There are plenty of plant nuts right here on GW and you are all very special.

I have learned that I was not alone in my lack of understanding about Florida's climate when I moved here 9+ years ago. I'm always pleased to see the same incredulous expressions when people see what I've grown in such a short time. And I'm even happier when they do it themselves.

I have learned not to disagree with certain people here. Some because they are more knowledgeable then I, and others because they will rarely listen to reason and thus are prone to committing the same mistakes many of us have already made.

I have learned exactly how much pulled pork per person a swap requires and that less than 18.35% of the folks who eat it will use a bun.

And finally, I have learned that Johnny Appleseed is not dead; he lives on in each and every one of us.

I've learned:
1. That if it is invasive, I probably have it somewhere on my property.
2. If I don't ask what it is before I plant it, it is probably also invasive.
3. That I should plan where I plant the things in my garden but it won't kill me if I don't.
4. That garden people are some of the nicest and most generous people I have ever met.
5. That fish emulsion is a great fertilizer. It is loved by my plants but even more by my dogs.
6. That you must read and write carefully and not have a thin skin. Email and message boards are a tough medium for communicating since there is no body language involved.

I have learned that there is a very special group of people that share the same passion for gardening that I have. You guys are a caring bunch. willing to share friendship,information and more.
I have discovered so many new plants fro being part of this forum.
We are very active and quick to help with a question.
I have learned much about butterflies and that I have much more to learn.
I have learned that Marcia is very knowledgeable about many topics.
I have learned that Ricky has a beautiful landscape.
And so much more

I have also learned that Fawnridge is not an overly opionated cranky woman person as I first thought. Fawnridge is a MAN! Lol Mistaken identy can be funny! He is a man of strong opinions, but more likely than not, his opinions hold water and he knows what he is talking about! He does not mind if you differ with his opinion, but he is always willing to share his insights....and Pulled Pork!!

I have also learned, like Katkin, no one can appreciate the miracle of growing a plant from seed, until you succeed on your own. Like her 30 ft poinciana, my tabebuia seed now 5 years old, is a 10 foot tree that even Dennis loves, respects and appreciates. Back when it was just a seedling, he saw it as another 'weed'. But you guys encouraged me and understood how much pleasure comes from being a "Johnny Appleseed". Today, Dennis treats that tree better than me! You all taught me patience!!

I've learned the personal and practical side of planning, creating, and maintaining a garden. I've taken in a great deal of information from online plant and garden resources, but this forum casts that information in the light of actual experience, which is priceless. And people here live and garden everyday in this sometimes paradoxical and strange climate we have. People here know what's up.

I am a lurker and have only started gardening this spring 2007.

I have learned florida gardening is intoxicating and addictive.
I have learned that any questions I have someone here has already asked and someone else will ask again.
I have learned that people here are very respectfull and helpfull.
I have learned that I want to be like Felix when I grow up, soaking wet in the pond and laughing!
I have learned to respect the fauna because Marcia says so.
I have learned to love Coleus because Cindea and Barbcoleus loves them.
I actually see crotons, growing up in the carribean and south fla. They are so ubiquitous you can skip right over them without noticing.
I have learned that nothing I have done recently has brought me as much joy and satisfaction.

First of all Tufan - I am jealous of your jalousie windows :)

No question is too dumb..... never discourage someone from asking. The "search" engine here is too broad.

It is okay to experiment , It is okay to move a plant . A properly placed weed cools the soil . Say yes to leaf litter !

Someone may place a plant were you wouldn`t......but if they want to go out and trim it very week , who cares !

It is NOT okay to run clippings thru the chipper when there is someone who would love to start plants from it.

I learned this is not the place for speed reading..... you must look at every word carefully.

No body knows it all....... I came from a long line of Florida gardeners. And I am still learning about something.

And no matter how hard you try to stick to your garden plan , something or ( someone) will change it.

Our post storm garden plan has been changed to accommodate 12 fruit trees and 5 bamboo !

What have I learned? Hhmmm... the list is long.

1. You must walk the yard to watch for insect damage before it gets out of control.
2. You can dig up a plant and just move it. Who knew?
3. All it takes is a picture and anything can be identified here.
4. If you go to swap you will be very well fed and if you try to drive away without taking plants someone will open the side door of the van and just shove one in there before you can get away ;->
5. Lawns are expensive and high maintenance. Really only useful for dogs and kids.
6. Black nose - back off
7. Brown cheek stripe - stay away, far away
8. Get to plants sales as soon as the gates open if you want the good stuff.

I'm sure I'll think of more as soon as I hit submit. I have to agree with all the posters here. Everyone I have met has been so friendly and generous. It is a nice thing to see is this day and age.

I just remembered an important one.

Snakes are good! They eats bugs and mice and if you just step back they will be on their merry way, far away from you.

This is a great topic:
I have learned so much from all of you, great gardening people!
I have learned to understand the seasons of vegetable growing, when to start tomato seeds and how to fight nematodes (thanks Treefrog, Delta Charlie, Lisa and Tony).
I have discovered the great variety of edibles (herbs included), that we are able to grow here. Thanks to this forum, my family eats home grown food vs. store bought.
I have learned how to safe kitchen scraps, and how to start a compost pile, and we are improving our soil, instead of just adding to the land fill.
Most of all, I know gardening is not just a rewarding hard work, it is a way of life. And thanks to this forum, I have friends that I can share my gardening downfalls and success with.

I suppose I can reiterate what everyone has already said, since it IS all true. Additionally though,

I've learned the names of plants I never knew existed.

I've learned Cuban tree frogs are an issue and the way to kill them humanely.

I've seen amazing gardens and felt the pride of those who care for them.

I learned that giving clippings and seeds away makes me feel great, and I end up getting new things in return most of the time.

And I guess the biggest thing is, I have a great and reliable place to get any and all Fl gardening info I may be in need of :)

May I add a PS...

I've learned that some people actually do read my LONG, wordy posts and that maybe I've helped them with issues about snakes and such. This is something that makes me very happy!!! Thank you for letting me know that you remember things like "black nose, back off, and brown cheek stripe, stay away, far away!" And that snakes are good, Cuban treefrogs, bad. You've made my day!

Another thing I'd like to add to my first list is that I have learned more Latin names since I've been a visitor here than I ever knew before, AND it has inspired me to continue to try to learn them. I LIKE knowing the difference between salvia leucantha and salvia farinacea!

Everyone here is an inspiration, and reading through this thread has been truly rewarding. Thanks for starting it, barbcoleus.

I have shown your last post on coral snake to my 4 year old boy. He learned the colors and black nose ID, we have looked on all the pictures and he learned to distinguish between the coral snake and the scarlet king snake. We draw the coral snake on the paper, colored it and cut it out. Put on the ground and practice what we would do, if we spot the coral snake in our garden. ( My hubby saw it only once, 2 years ago, and we have a picture of it).
Your posts have been so useful to us. I really appreciate your effort into giving us the information about snakes and other living creatures that we share this Florida land with.
Please, keep them coming.
(If it would be possible to repost the other snake IDs, I would really appreciate it. That way my little boy can learn all the snakes that he needs to be cautious of.)

Veronika, I will be happy to bump the water moccasin post, but I think the rattlesnake post was lost somewhere. I can't find it in the archives. Maybe it's time to redo them. Let me see what I can do. I've been so darn busy lately, I haven't had time to do the last ones, but I will make every effort!

I'm really glad you found them useful and that your little boy has learned a lot from them. At his age, it's probably best if he doesn't try to pick up ANY snakes, but it's especially good for him to know when one is actually dangerous.

We put the "paper" coral snake on the ground, and practiced to stop as soon as he would see him, and then while looking at him slowly start backing off and come to tell a grown up, what he saw and where. Not any picking up! I like snakes and I like to see them, but I have way too much respect to even come closer to them.

I was out working in my garden when this idea came to me. There are so many useful practical ideas on this forum and I've learned more here than I did from anywhere else. And there is also the cameraderie of good friends. Sometimes we live in areas where others are not interested or don't have the time for gardening but here we can show photos to people who really enjoy them. I know most of us garden because something inside tells us we must so it isn't really to impress others but still a compliment is always nice.

As far as snakes go, if I can identify it as a snake, I leave the area. I don't discriminate based on color or stripes, polka dots or plaid.

This is a very interesting topic as i mostly enjoy reading that other people are struggling also .
Here's my two cents. Not sure which i learned specificly from this forum or the internet. or personal experience.lol
There are only two types of plants . Those that try to eat the house or those that die on the way home.
There's definitely more than one method to grow any plant.
If your orchids are growing well you're obviously growing the wrong kind.
No matter how difficult the plant there is someone somewhere growing it in a closet .
Latin names are not Latin!! They're only latinized!!!
I must learn latinization because there is no other way.

There is a direct correlation between how much a plant costs and how quickly I can kill it . The magic amount seems to be about 25 dollars. Pay more than that it will wilt on the way home.
The best way to kill weeds is to transplant them they'll die immediately.
This is the galling one .Neighbor asks for advice on how to grow a specific orchid . You give long winded info which is completely ignored. Hers bloom better than mine lol

I have definitely learned over and over again that a can or bottle of BUD is a better gauge of size than a ruler.

I have also learned that the latin names of plants gives a certain someone in S Florida a warm tingly feeling. She knows who she is.

I've learned that it is possible to invite a garden friend over to 'visit' and you both spend two hours outside walking around the yard. After your friend leaves, it dawns on you that you never invited your friend inside. But a true garden friends understands. :)
