Two Rainbows

I spotted these two rainbows as I was mowing my yard the other evening. Has anyone ever noticed that the sky is a lighter colour under a rainbow, as seen under the lower one here??

Also, notice that the colour sequence(violet-blue-green-yellow-red) is always reversed from each other, when two rainbows are seen at the same time.

Tomato question/problem

I know some tomato varieties are prone to cracking - you'll sometimes see cracking mentioned in seed catalog descriptions. Are they watered from overhead? Rain? Sometimes water getting into cracks can do that. I'm w/Silvia, just cut it off - the rest looks fine.

I bet if you would have looked closely, you would have seen two rainbows. Whenever you see one very bright rainbow, look closely and you will most likely see another. Kt

I've seen two at once on a number of occasions, but I don't always have a camera. The upper rainbow is always the faintest and the lower one is the darkest.

The next time any of you see a rainbow, look closely and there is a good chance you will see another at some point before the rainbow disappears.

What makes a double rainbow?

Sometimes we see two rainbows at once. What causes this? We have followed the path of a ray of light as it enters and is reflected inside the raindrop. But, not all of the energy of the ray escapes the raindrop after it is reflected once. A part of the ray is reflected again, and travels along a different path inside the drop to emerge from the drop at a different angle. The rainbow we normally see is called the primary rainbow and is produced from one internal reflection. The secondary rainbow arises from two internal reflections and the rays exit the drop the second time at an angle of around 50o, rather than the 42o for the primary rainbow. This effect produces the secondary rainbow, with the colors reversed from the primary rainbow. It is possible for light to be reflected more than twice within a raindrop, but these additional rainbows are typically never seen under normal circumstances.

I've seen 2 rainbows on several occasions and never cease to be amazed at the beauty. Also always remember that it is a sign of God's promise never to destroy earth again by floods.

A great picture. It's so hard to get two rainbows on one photo.

About ten years ago, I was driving from Rockport to Houston and up around Ganado, a storm had just moved through, but there were three complete rainbows. I couldn't believe it. It was the first time and the last time that I've seen anything like it. And wouldn't you know, . . .I didn't have my camera.
