welcome to the forum... if you are going to hang around.. plz go back to you member's page.. and add your location.. so it shows in every post ... thx .. sun in GA is not the same in MN ... so it is imperative ... as noted above.. to know where you are ... hosta are only shade tolerant ... and can actually be more vigorous in sun ... but they can end up looking rather ratty by the end of summer ...and even though they get ugly.. they end up bigger next year.. because of the increased photosynthesis .... to avoid that ... the general rule .. is to avoid sun in the heat of the day .. hosta actually sweat ... transpire ... lose water ....so we dont want them.. on a daily basis.. running out of water.. during the heat of the day ... and so we try to avoid such ... with as much sun all the rest of the day ... if they do run low on water.. they get all crispy ... aka.. ugly ... the most important ones to avoid hot sun ... are the plants with white tissue.. as that is the tissue that is least likely to tolerate such ... all that said.. just plop it in the ground.. anywhere you want .. and if it gets ratty in late summer .. just move the darn thing for next year .. and if you feel it necessary.. discipline it with a few days on the driveway with little or no soil .. and then replant it ... it wont care .. and it will forever after know who exactly is in charge in your garden ... ken ps: again .. depending where you are .... july and august may or may not be the best time to be planting.. depending on how much after care you can provide ... there would be no harm in holding the pot until sept .... and planting them ... but this is more of a volume thing.. both in terms of number of plants and size of garden ... the idea that you might lose track of some .. and not provide the requisite water needed ... you should be able to focus on one plant ...

@jacqueline9CA no ma'am, it's confusing because "miniature" refers to the flower size. Pink Clouds is actually a rambler/shrub. Mr. Moore released it into commerce in 1957 to compete with Ragged Robin (Gloire des Rosomanes) which was enjoying a resurgence in commerce as a "hedge rose", an earlier version of what J&P's Simplicity line was marketed as. Sequoia discovered it made a splendid root stock for their mini standards. If you ever obtained a standard rose from Sequoia, it was budded or grafted on Pink Clouds. They maintained many huge plants of it on the nursery to supply the thousands of standard whips required for the mini standards. Burling also produced longer whips for the weeping Renae and other weeping standards she produced. They maintained the mother block plantings of Pink Clouds, making sure to only take cuttings from it and never budding anything to the mother plants to insure they remained "virus free". It has been indexed and found to still remain "virus free". Burling has promoted Pink Clouds as a stock for years because, as she reports, it remains in suitable condition for budding much of the year where Huey and others have specific periods or seasons where their sap flows sufficiently to allow successful budding. It appears what enables it to remain in condition for budding over such a long period is the thickness of its cambium layer, the circulatory system under the bark. IXL and De la Grifferaie also share that thick cambium so it appears to be a trait inherited from the multiflora genes behind them. It roots very easily and is the easiest stock I've worked with for budding due to that thick cambium. If your area is EXTREMELY alkaline and dry, it may not be happy, but it worked quite well in Visalia, Newhall, Encino and here on the Central Coast. Anyone growing it can EASILY supply cuttings as it wants to GROW.

I am a huge fan of hardy euphorbias and have grown many species myself as well as spec'd them in countless client designs. Many behave more like a subshrub rather than a herbaceous perennial, retaining stems and foliage throughout the year. Ascot Rainbow is a selected form of E. x martinii, a naturally occurring hybrid of of two very tough species. Like the majority of its cousins, AR prefers full sun and a lean, well drained soil. Flowers form in very early spring at the terminal ends of the stems produced the previous season. Once a stem has flowered, it will not do so again and should be removed at the base. One needs to be careful not to damage new shoots that will be present at that time as well as avoiding contact with the caustic sap - latex - that will appear from any damaged or cut stems.
