How do I level my yard?

The best way to level your lawn is with a tractor and a box blade. For those of you with smaller lawns, or no access to a tractor, here's a summary of how you can level your lawn yourself...

1. Mow with a rotary mower at the mowers lowest setting.

2. Scalp to 1/16 inch with a rented, self powered and propelled, reel mower. The purpose of this is to scalp the yard as low as possible and remove the debris. If you cannot rent a reel mower, mow at the lowest possible setting of whatever you have and remove the debris.

3. Core aerate (if you think you must, sigh)

4. Top dress with [*****your local topsoil*****] mix.

5. Drag a large mat over the topdressing to make it super level. Drag in all directions until you are happy with it.

6. Seed or sod.

7. Roll the seed or sod with a rented water fillable roller.

8. Fertilize.

NOTES:

1. This step may hit roots, soil, or hidden rocks in your soil. Be careful.

2. The only way to completely remove the turf and keep the roots alive is to mow as low as possible. This exposes all the high and low spots to make step 4 work better.

3. Dont aerate before step 2 or you will have trouble mowing. If you have low spots you want to raise, dont aerate the low spots but aerate heavily in the high areas so you can sweep all the cores to the low areas.

4. *****Were still working on what to use in this step.***** I also want to come up with an easy way to estimate how much top dressing to buy. Basically you get 1/4 to 1/3 inch per cubic yard per 1,000 square feet. So 4 cubic yards will provide about an inch of cover on 1,000 square feet. There are probably issues with how to get this out of a pile and relatively evenly distributed before dragging.

5. You can use chain link fencing with boards to weight it down or an inverted shipping palate.

6. Use the best seed you can find. It will be the seed with the lowest % weed.

7. The roller is needed to push the seed into the soil and provide good contact. Sod needs to be rolled so that the bottom of all the sod is touching the soil. Roots cannot grow through air.

8. If you were doing this in an organic program, you would fertilize with alfalfa at 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet about 2-3 weeks prior to starting this process.

Generally, swarming bees do not attack, because they have nothing to defend (no honey, no children). However, I wouldn't try to remove them without a beesuit. I am really surprised that none of the local beekeepers want to help you. Geez, that's a real drag--certatinly wouldn't happen in our neighborhood. The bees won't stay in a clump on a branch for very long--they will try to find a real home within a day or two, so you can just wait until they leave. Unfortunately, they may decide to move from the tree to somewhere in your house, which would make the problem go from bad to worse. So, what's to do? Well, by any chance do you have a bee supply place locally? If so, you could purchase a standard beehive box, and put them in there. Or, you could put them in a box of some sort, and take them out of town. To move them at all, however, you'll need to either buy a beesuit, or figure out some way to cover yourself completely. Some form of netting over the head is essential--if bees are going to attack (not likely in this case, but there's no sense taking a chance), plus long overalls, leather gloves, workboots and trousers with the cuffs taped shut. @abelrose Did you try talking to them first before reporting them? I hope so. I have a jerk real estate investor who thought he'd flip the house next to quickly. He pulled up all of my former neighbors perennials including cute little very ell mainted evergreens, roses, spire, iris, lilacs, etc. Left completely empty beds with just soil. House way overpriced so it hasn't sold for months. Now the beds have every noxious weed I've seen from purslane to plantain to creeping charlei, crab grass, burdock, dandelion, deadly nightshade, and more. Idiot. My yard has perennials, mature trees, groundcover, grass, and a bit of mulch. Very few weeds have any place to pop up. I can pull them (about 3-5) once a week. This developer left a nastygram on my door right when all the beds in his property were denuded. He said my backyard was "a jungle". Backfired. I have a friend in code enforcement who said my yard was a great example of a fuuly planted, low maintenance yard. The only weed I have is milkweed for monarch butterflies. The developer thought having so many plants was "jungle-y". Compared to his dirt flats and burnt out grass I guess.

I would change the siding to a darker gray board and batten. Remove the shutters and paint the window trim, including the bow window, black. Change the front door to a stained wood, along with the garage door and porch railing. Add a modern black light fixture and 4" modern black house numbers stacked vertically to the left of the door. Paint the downspout to match the brick.

And Home Depot also carries this scythe: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Razor-Back-12-in-Grass-Hook-with-Wood-Handle-62220/303209945 You'll also want a heavy duty shovel for getting invasive roots out, though some vines are actually easier to yank than dig. We picked the double blade weed cutter when we were dealing with an overgrown area. Stand clear when someone's swinging ... its vicious. Whack the mess to a manageable height (to the ground), dig out as much as you can, and cover with heavy black plastic to sun bake what's left. You'll still have some come back that you'll have to keep after, but it should help with a lot of it. Watch out for poison ivy, and good luck!
