Natanya..Sun amounts,intensity and zone is something that should always be part of the thought process when choosing where to plant clematis. For instance..my zone of 8B in Texas has very hot summers..pruning group 3's adore it..especially my Florida's..but some of my pruning group 2's really do fade or droop if not properly watered..which is HUGELY important down here in Summertime...I have a Sprinkler system which services my front and side gardens but NONE in the back gardens...so soaker hoses and hand watering is a task I perform until I work out getting my new drip system going!!..I have found the Japanese Varieties prefer morning sun and afternoon shade down here..and others get brown-out by August...I have both Clematis "Barbara Harrington" & "Comtesse de Bouchard" and they BOTH adore the tons of sun I am letting them have..so they should flourish just beautifully in your zone 6.I would think your zone must be heaven for clematis...just like the three bear..not too hot and not too cold..but just right!

Which variety does well in full sun

I rescued five small clematis from a big box store early this spring. They have done well, even bloomed, and I have them in 8" clay pots because I will soon be moving and I don't want to leave them behind. My question is, do I cut back the clematis when I am transplanting them into the ground this fall, if yes, how far back can they be cut? They will be in full sun and I do know their roots should be kept cool and they will do OK. Can you give me any additional advice regarding the care of the plants? Thanks, Jay

I don't agree with blanket statements that more sun is always better. While this might be true in places with high humidity and lower elevations, here in the hot arid SW at 5000 feet, there is such a thing as too much sun, and plants which receive a few hours of shade/partial shade always produce better and are less stressed. Plants here that receive 12 hours of direct sunlight will develop a blasted look in the summer where the color is more grayish-green than lush green. The lower leaves get leathery faster than shaded plants, and the leaves rarely provide a flattened surface to the sun, no matter how carefully you maintain moisture levels. At a certain point here, sun ceases to be a critical component and becomes a stress factor. Plants grown in buckets in these conditions do even worse. They dry out very quickly, and the buckets can get extremely hot when placed on surfaces like concrete, brick, or stone. To help, you can put a layer of mulch in the bucket to help retain moisture, and if your ground temperatures are high, you can place the bucket higher up on some type of stand. Regarding your plants, yellow pear does have thinner, more sharply jagged leaves. It's typical of that variety. Under the right conditions, they can become obscenely large. Since you only have one plant to compare, it might not actually be the conditions that are unfavorable, but it could be the individual plant itself. When you transplanted the yellow pear, was it still in any type of peat container?

Hey Carrie, maybe I have dappled shade instead of dappled sun.........but this is what I grow there. Wood Ferns (from you), hostas, Kimberly Fern, sun coleus, Dragon Wing Begonia (must have), tall Ginger, Oriental Lilies, phlox (tall), and elephant ears. As you know, I have to try to have every plant in the universe so these HAVE to grow in the dappled sun/shade bed. The Dragon Wings are in red and are like jewels....bloom all season and I take cuttings. A decent house plant. Sun coleus gives spectacular color, too. I listed some just green but you will spot that in a heartbeat.
