Free Metal Projects - Job Perk

My new job entails a metal fabrication shop that will do projects for FREE or pay for the materials for bigger projects. They have already fixed a couple of metal tables that I have but in reality it is a teaching facility and I need to come up with ideas for the students to put design and creativity and then I get to reap the benefits of their projects. If you were in my situation what kind of metal projects would you persue? I thought of a cleaning cart but my mind went blank after that.

yard and aarden ornaments reusing old shovels, and tool parts

creating metal frames to hold a wood top, box or basket for holding items to organize in the house

Making pot rack kind of hanging

mason jar holders for out of doors in the yard, for plants or candles

S hooks to hang plants

hooks to mount on the wall for clothing in a mud room

handles for a cabinet

trunk-like hardware for corners and handles, edges for a box for coffee table or storage

stakes for plant ID, use paint on flat part at the top to write label on

cut a kitchen stainless handle in 1/2 in the center, add length to it and you have a long custom handle.

There are so many things you can do!

I know this is very specific, but I've been trying to find this old laundry cart...

Doesn't have to be old to be a neat bar cart.

I love blanketflower, Kelly - it grows wild in beach sand at Gulfport and Biloxi, and seems to grow better there than here. Florida is known for its sand, so I guess that's why they're working out in your meadow. I mailed my order to Mary Ann at Pine Ridge Gardens, and the seeds that I ordered from Native American Seed in Texas came the other day - the seeds are Liatris pycnostachya, Cassia fasciculata/Partridege pea, Salvia Azurea/Pitcher Sage, Ipomopsis rubra/Standing cypress, Penstemon tenuis/Gulf Coast penstemon, and Tridens flavus/Purple top grass. All are native here. The plants I've ordered are Panicum virgatum 'Cloud Nine'/panic grass, P. virgatum 'Red Sunset', several Tridens flavus/purple top grasses, and two Liatris pycnostachya, all native. I'll soon be starting the seeds, and I'll plant the plants as soon as we get the top soil and spread it. I've got some swamp sunflowers and native delphiniums that came from Bustani's that I'm planting in my garden that I hope will yield seeds that I can then use to grow plants for the meadow - I hope to be able to do the same thing with the Monarda punctata that's coming from Mostly Texas Natives and some red stem sunflowers that grow up front. Plus the agalinis should make seeds that I can use. What usually happens when I plant things in an uncontrolled place - as opposed to, say, a raised bed in my garden - whatever wants to come up, comes up and dominates what I've planted. I suppose I could have thanked Bob for his attempt to cheat me, I wasn't feeling very charitable at the time though. I do feel sorry for the guy, but he has no idea how to judge risk, my electric air handler is the least of my worries. As you say, kitchens are much more dangerous and as I mentioned, cars are deadly. Why someone would try to stop DIY work on HVAC when 25000 people are killed in cars each year is beyond me. You are welcome, I don't recall the lecture but if it helped you then I am glad of it. Can you tell me what you meant to say in this post? 8 is the most you have sent to the hospital, were you the installer, the paramedic, the police chief? Why are you sending anyone to the hospital, I never have. Am I to assume that this was a kitchen installed by a DIYer? Odds are it was a professional job and it was dangerous, are you arguing that professionals are not competent to install kitchens? I am not getting the point of this post. I'm am also not getting why you and Bob keep talking about poison and explosions when I am talking about an all electric air handler, where do you suppose the CO is going to come from? And what part of the electric coils are going to explode? I can not answer the question of what you know. You might know quite a bit, you might not, there is no way for me to tell. If you know quite a bit then you might find it uplifting to share the knowledge. I was really surprised at the outpouring of negativity that I found on this forum, I think some people feel threatened by DIYers. The DIYers of this world pose little danger to the jobs of the competent professional HVAC technicians. I would be willing to bet that many pros started out as DIYers on something, probably their cars, enjoyed it and found a profession that valued that kind of problem solving ability. Anyway thank you for your concern, I will install a few CO detectors. And thank you for your permission to continue with my DIY projects. As I write this I am listening to the gentle hum of my air handler and enjoying the soft currents of warm air moving through my house. No doubt I will be dead by dawn tomorrow, but I will enjoy my warm fool's paradise while I live.

Good morning, everyone! allison, The 1/2 bath might be considered a 'folly' down there! I do have a small area around it somewhat finished, but the rest of it will always be a spot to work on my many hobbies, like furniture refinishing, messy crafty stuff, you-name-it. I also have a doggie door in the opposite 'working' side of the cellar, that goes to a former garage under my office, which I made that into a wood working 'shop' years ago. Another doggie door in the shop takes them out to their fenced in area of the yard. The cellar and the shop are valuable real estate to me, just as they are. I do have 3 windows and a door with glass in that 'living' part of the cellar, as well as a wood stove, and an armoire with a TV it in. It's cozy in the winter with the stove, and cool in the summer and the couch down there is great for naps! These pics are of my former LR sofa down there and a 'reading' nook with big chair. Not much decorating has taken place yet! The door you see on the right in this pic is to the 1/2 bath. This is the reading nook which faces the wood stove. Being a dog lover, I got this original oil painting of a Springer from eBay for $21.49! His eyes are a perfect match to the Behr 'Cork' paint color. And this is Ikat fabric called Casbah, that I got at 1/2 price at Ballard Designs. I might make sill length panels for the 1/2 bath for fall and winter from it. The way it goes with that paisley wallpaper is the stuff that (my) dreams are made of. I'm happy to see so many paisley lovers here, as I have always been one, and I LOVE to mix patterns in a room, even a small one like this. I'm glad that others are inspired by my 're-cycled' bathroom! I'd never have done it if there hadn't been a rough one down there to start; but I just replaced that with one that even I'll use. No more storing tires and hoses in this one.

YES! You want to do the top blue...get on that asap. We'll all look around for ridiculously low priced chandeliers so that you have some funny money for extra goodies... As usual, I adore chinoiserie, so I would do that kind of fabric for the seats... Someone posted drapes that I thought were SO fabulous...I'll see if I can find them. If you have an Ikea near you, they have very nice drapes (I would do white) that you can add a trim to? And they would be well within your budget...

We had a metal artist make us this cool end table. He does all sorts of metal end tables, coffee tables, etc.

Our campus fine arts program has worked with the city on functional yet artistic bike racks.

I always wanted but never got metal troughs to put on benches in front of windows to hold my indoor plants without having to worry about the water ruining the wood.

Love the bike rack idea. Perhaps bike racks could be donated to businesses, the local government, schools, etc.

Here are some other ideas.
- counter stools - for kitchen, project room, etc
- metal shelving - for garage or basement
- garden art
- coffee table (base or whole), side table, console table
- picture or mirror frame, possibly a cheval mirror
- hand railing

What happened with the bike rack project is that the local bicycle club and the city partnered nered with the university in developing the racks. The bike club had some advocacy money they could donate to the project. The students were allowed to be creative, but they also got feedback from the bicycle club about functionality of use for the racks. Overall investment in 4 racks was only a few hundred dollars of materials with the students providing the creative input under their faculty director.

Now our local tribal organization is thinking about doing the same thing, to have the students develop bike racks that incorporate Native American culture.
