Need info about owning cars/homes in 2 states

We have two homes. One in Florida, one in Maryland. Two years ago we started spending a bit more time in Florida than in Maryland so that Florida is now our legal residence. (We file our income tax there, etc.) We have automobiles in both locations. Our MD car was bought and titled in MD. Our FL car was bought and titled in FL AFTER we had become FL residents and obtained FL driver's licenses.

We now want to buy another car IN Maryland and TITLE it in Maryland. Can we do that since we are not Maryland residents anymore, nor have Maryland driver's licenses? Thanks for your replies.....

I'm not sure a car dealer would care. Addresses on driver's licenses are incorrect a lot of times anyway. Use your MD address when you purchase the car, and tell them you haven't gotten around to getting a new driver's license yet.

I assume you have your mail forwarded to FL?

Our primary domicile is NY but we also have a home in CT. Our DLs are issued in NY. We purchased three cars though in CT. The dealer arranged for them to be licensed in NY. Our auto insurance carrier would not insure them unless they were licensed in the same state of our DLs.

Ahhhhh....deep breath. Thank you all for your wisdom and replies! I'm going to look into the companies you suggested as we still have time to change before our old coverage expires. Now that I'm calmer (!), I think I wouldn't have hit the ceiling if yesterday's email from Esurance had included a statement like: "Please note: if this vehicle was purchased within the past XX days, please confirm that the registration has been updated to reflect your ownership" or something to that effect. I simply opened the email and was blasted with the notice that they'd found something that we'd apparently hid from them, and my interpretation of that was that it was slamming our ethics. I'm not saying that very well, but you get my drift. I also find it terribly creepy that they put the full name of a stranger in our email. When we purchased the truck last week from a long-standing reputable dealer, never in any paperwork was the previous owner's name listed. Frankly, we're buying a used truck, and the previous owner's name is none of our business. So that email on top of the previous one that claimed we'd provided inaccurate information about a gap in our coverage on top of our current insurance agent's genial incompetence on several occasions (not that his incompetence had anything to do with Esurance!) was enough to send me around the bend. We have excellent credit and a clean driving record other than a deer hit at the end of 2009 (the deer hit last fall didn't count against us since no insurance was paid out) so this should be SO simple. Thank you all again. I'm off to do some internet research! You guys are the best!

My previous home had thermofoil and I never had any problems with it. But, there are many grades of thermofoil and I've heard of the peeling issues with the economy lines. Are they going to replace the drawer fronts or just repair the foil? I don't know how many drawers and doors are involved but before I'd give them the $650 I'd call a local cabinet maker and have them give you an estimate for wood doors and drawer fronts to match the frames of the cabinet. Cabinet makers I've dealt with in the past have access to the termofoil products, so ask them to also estimate the cost of doors and drawer fronts with thermofoil (from a reputable brand). Using a cabinet maker doesn't mean custom. Your cabinets are probably standard sizes so he could just order and install what you're needing. I wouldn't consider replacing the cabinets as an option if the cabinet frames are in good condition. It's going to cost much more to try to replace the frame itself and most likely the granite and backsplash will be damaged. I just read on your xpost where the contractor applied thermofoil on exposed edges and only installed doors and drawer fronts. Just how many doors/drawers do you have? I found where Prestige carries your cabinet fronts (they're located in Fla.) and the warranty is 3 years. You may want to call them for more info regarding the problems you're seeing. I'm sorry you are having issues. At this point, if there was a warranty on your kitchen, it would be through the cabinet manufacturer, NOT the provider of labor for the install. Industry standard is one year of labor warranty, and then whatever product warranty is in place should take care of any future issues. Do you have a brand name for the cabinets? Any paperwork at all? Because $3500 is a pretty low amount for cabinets for any kitchen, and I suspect the contract got them from a less than reputable source, like some of the famous Chinese import cabinet places.

Fluorescent is still the best bang for the buck or use a fluorescent fixture with LED lamps (but compare the LED lamp output to comparable fluorescent). Unless you’re going to be spending a LOT of time in your garage, energy savings are minimal. From there you have general lighting and task lighting. Off hand, I’d saying four, 4 lamp, 4’ fixtures would be sufficient. Then add task lighting over, say, a work bench. 8’ fixtures tend to be a little more expensive, so are the bulbs. Then you have to transport an 8’ glass tube when you need a replacement. I’d go with 4’ fixtures. If you are in a cold climate and don’t plan on heating the garage, look for low temperature fixtures. While you are at it, you might think about adding some circuits for general use receptacles. Two 20amp, 120v circuits would probably be enough unless you have a big compressor or planning on adding some stationary tools.

Check with your local DMV. Some states require the registrant (not the owner) to have a DL in that state.

We have cars in NY and UT. Our legal residence is in NY and our DL are NY. We have purchased several cars in UT, registered and insured in UT. Geico is our insurance carrier for all our cars in both states but the UT policy is separate from the NY policy. This means the UT car doesn't receive a multi-car discount.

I don't know any laws pertaining to this, but I can tell you my experience.

My husband has registered cars in SC, DE, WI, and AR (not at the same time) all while having a drivers license in only MD.

Why do you want to do this? Do we presume some tax savings?

No, there is no tax savings on the car. We legitimately spend more time in FL than in MD to qualify for Florida residency. FL has no income tax and that makes a difference when you are retired. We just don't want to have to buy the car in Florida and then have to drive it to Maryland. We keep a car in both locations and always fly back and forth.

We do not have to worry about forwarding mail because we have two adult children - not EXACTLY children---aged 36+) who live in another level of our Maryland home and take care of the house and family pets when we are not here.

Why not buy the car in MD but have it registered in FL? You don't have to have the car registered in the same state that you purchase it in?

In most states you have to register the car were it is garaged.
There are exceptions for active duty military and temporary presence.

Yes, I'd title it in whichever state is cheaper, if that's permitted. (Is "whichever" a word?!) When we bought a car from a Michigan dealer we had to title it where we live, in Illinois. It cost a lot more in IL!
