making fig pickin' gizmos
Comments (14)I've made one with PVC pipe and have given up on it.....too finicky. However, I have since found a much better fig picker. It is sold by Arcoa and is called E-Z Reacher......see the link below. This neat tool works extremely well for picking figs. I intend to supply these to my customers when I open up my 'U-Pick-It' fig orchard........still just a dream. This can also be used to pick those out of reach blackberries. It helped my grandson avoid the thorns while picking those this summer. Also, works great for my original intended purpose.....to pick up prickly pine cones. Comments (13)Even if he's not shining the headlights directly into our house (which he does quite often) he can still see directly into our house. I know the perfect solution to this problem. Put several strips of light reflective tape across your window. It is cheap, easily installed and removed, should not block your view and will be very annoying to your neighbor! We have a difficult elderly neighbor who has done many things to pester us. Just one thing that he did........... One day I noticed strangers walking around my neighbors barn and outbuildings, I figured he had his property for sale and did not give it another thought. But after a few months, the strangers started standing on my fence line and looking intently at my property, sometimes for 10 minutes or more. The strangers made my dogs bark and I was rather uncomfortable with it too! I called my neighbor to ask him what was going on and he told me that he had advertised his property for sale which is 5 acres, and included my property into the sale price so it was a total of 11 acres plus my house, my barns, etc. I was speechless...I mean what do you say to an old person that does something like try and sell your property without your knowledge? I know that some reading this will chuckle, but we were not laughing. Michelle...See MoreOne Paint Color For WHOLE house--anybody?
Comments (56)I am in the midst of choosing colors for my renovated bungalow and am trying to get colors to "flow" while staying with earth tones mostly but not doing the same color everywhere! Quite a challenge. I started with my trim (at the insistence of cabinet maker, who is making medicine cabinets with trim to match what's around the windows and doors) and chose BM "cotton balls" (hope I don't find that too white but I wanted something whiter than what I had before, which was Ivory White). The kitchen will have cherry cabinets, medium brown wood floors, soapstone counters, and the backsplash tiles are hand made 3x6 that vary from light green with gray to greenish-gray with darker gray edges - I chose Sebring White. The sunroom I'm thinking Vale Mist, the den off the sunroom maybe Vale Mist mixed at 25% (lots less natural light), the hallways Morning Dew, the living room off the hallway Coastal Fog, the dining room next to it (and leading back into the kitchen) Tapestry Beige (in part to pick up color in fabric of dining chair seat). Master BR I've chosen Silken Pine but mixed at 150% - it's to complement the bathroom tile, which is P&L P138 (of course I'm using the store's sample and who knows if the tile will actually be that color!). Trying to decide what do about ceilings. If my builder and architect get what they want, I'd use "ceiling white" but no way am I going to go with yet another white - it will either be Cotton Balls (in a different finish than the trim) or should I go with the room colors, perhaps mixed at 50%? Thoughts? TMI????...See MoreDoes anybody know about squirrels?
Comments (15)First, you must find a way to keep the squirrels off the house. You will continue to have the problem until the squirrels are denied access. Common Access Points: 1. A tree limb that is overhanging the roof or within a few feet of the roof. 2. Ivy or other vines climbing the exterior walls. 3. A trellis to close to the house is a squirrel ladder. 4. Electric power wires. The critter climbs the utility pole and gets onto the wires and then may have access to your roof depending on the details of your installation. In our town, the power company lays out the distrubition transformer and wires (on the pole) in a way that discourages squirrels. However, in some installations, the squirrels do manage to get on the insulated service entrance wires without electrocuting themselves. 5. Wood siding or wood downspouts are climable. 6. Ancillary buildings nearby. Most building codes call for a minimum separation between unattached building such as sheds for fire protection purposes, but if you are ina rural area, you building may have been constructed differently. I've seen many old farm houses with a smoke house or utility shed located a few feet from the back door. If the shed is climable, it is a stepping stone for the squirrels. In our neighborhood, we have red (fox) and gray squirrels. Our experience has been that it is the little fiesty red squirrels who are the most persistent, do the most damage, and the most difficult to evict. My next door neighbor was invaded by red squirrels. They entered his house by chewing a hole through the roof next to the chimney. He made repairs and removed two trees that were too close to the house. The problem was solved once the squirrels were denied access to the roof....See Moresusanjn
