LOL! I hate it even worse when they speak in a language other than English on North American made shows and they DON'T put in the subtitles.

I also hate movies with German spoken and English under titles.... cause the translation never truly fits... and I have to pay to much attention.... cause for some reason I can't disregard the under titles.

I thought of the perfect solution.....don't watch them! lol

We watch everything captioning on.
Started years ago because my husband
goes to bed so much earlier and it was
one way to keep the sound turned down
enough so that it wouldn't bother him.
Now it's hard to watch at all with out it.

We started using captioning for DVD's of "Hamish MacBeth", an old BBC series, because we could-nae unnerstan 'em, innit? LOL

Then we watched more British series and again reverted to the captioning. Right now we're watching Season Two of "The Wire" (set in Baltimore) and need the captioning to understand both the black and the white characters. (Made more difficult when a white boy apes black lingo!)

I'm pretty pleased that my HS French enables me to grasp most of what's being said in a French film, but I would still be guessing a lot without the captioning.

I'm with ya pup. The other day "Tora, Tora, Tora" was on and I've never seen it and wanted to. Had bad reception that day to start with and then they had the subtitles so small it was hard to read anyway. C'mon! Geez! A little of the language for effect is fine but like you say, I don't want to read the book. This is a TV not a Kindle!

All I can say is thank goodness for captioning because I have a hearing disability and couldn't watch tv without it. You get used to it, but at times it's difficult to see all the action because you're reading the words. But you gotta do what you gotta do.

my rant is why do we suddenly need the influx of British accented hosts on tv shows? are there not enough American English speaking candidates who need work? i don't have a bias toward them other than it is obvious that they came here for work, and got it. i wonder how many Americans get work over there? sorry to rant within your rant......i agree with it also.

I don't mind the captioning if you can read it, sometimes the background is as dark as the words. In stead of asking "what did he say?" we ask "what did it say?"

We've used "Closed Captioning" for years, b/c as Dee Can said, DH's "hearing problem", i.e., deaf!, made him miss most of what was being said. After awhile, I got used to it, and found that it was helpful, except that, again as Dee Can said, one focuses on the words rather than the action.

A first for us, though, was when we saw "J. Edgar", last week and the whole movie had Closed Captioning. Neither of us had ever seen that in a movie. Since it was produced and directed by Clint Eastwood, we thought maybe he was taking pity on all us senior citizens! :>)

The TV that I primarily use was originally purchased by Jans father in 1975.
