Walmart's meat department.....

I've never bought meat at Walmart, and in recent years I'm less likely to because all the meat seems to have "12% solution" in it--whatever that is! The meat looks unnaturally red to me, so I suppose the solution is responsible for that.

However, a friend told me that she always buys Perdue chicken from Walmart because it's so tender and juicy. So I bought a package of split chicken breasts the other day. I noticed the chicken, too, had "solution" added, but somewhat less (10%, I think), and the label said the solution was chicken broth.

Maybe it's only chicken broth (or maybe I didn't read the label carefully enough), but I do not like this chicken! It's definitely tender and juicy, but it tastes artificial to me--not anything like what chicken is supposed to taste like.

Anyone shop Walmart's meat department?

We have pretty much given up on Wal-Mart meat. It smells bad when you cook it.

I have never heard anything good about Walmart meat.

Not gonna let DH see that, he already has crazy ideas. One time, when grocery shopping and my back was turned, he put a gallon jug of wine in my cart and then when someone came down the aisle started saying "what you mean buying wine when the kids don't even have milk?". Nearly brained him right there. Another time he slipped a can of foot powder into an unsuspecting man's cart. The man only had 3 or 4 items in his cart and was ready to check out. This was at a store where the clerk unpacked the cart, and when she put that foot powder on the counter, he got upset and told her that wasn't his and I think he tho't she slipped it in there. Another time we had been in a little variety store and I had bought a pair of sandals. Well, the following day we went back for something and I was wearing the sandals and as we passed the sandal display he started saying "Donna, where are your shoes, what are you doing with those sandals?" I just turned and left the store and he stood there laughing like a maniac. I couldn't prove that I had bought them the day before, no receipt with me. Asked him later if he was trying to get me thrown in jail. This was in our much younger days and he was feeling ornery. Has settled down now, usually stays in truck and naps while I shop, thank goodness. Donna

    Q

    Comments (10)
Yes our paper said the other day that our target and most all others will be closing their garden dept. They are re-doing the whole store and bringing in more groceries, fresh fruit, veggies and lots of other stuff. What a shame as i always liked their garden center,i'd find better and some unusual stuff there than in other places. Do you folks realize all our hobby stuff is being taken away?? Wal mart did away with fabrics 2 years or so ago,now target and the garden shop, what will be next??? Kathi

    meat shrinkage

    Q

    Comments (6)
I agree, the packages often say "flavored enchanced" or "up to 18% solution, those are both just salt and water. Also, the more fatty a meat is, the more shrinkage you may get, like that 80% "lean" hamburger which means it's really 20% fat. I don't think it really has to do with cheap cuts of meat, but it does have to do with what you're paying for, so read the label. Overcooking may cause some cuts of meat to shrink appreciably, but some, like corned beef, are extremely fatty and will shrink no matter the cooking method. Read the labels so you know what you're paying for and those cheap packages might not be as good a buy as you think. Annie

All we have around are Super Wal-Marts (I live in NW Arkansas, home of Wal-Mart) and all but one have lost their fabric depts and have downsized the craft dept to a miserable little dab of craft goods. Can't even get a skein of floss anymore in any of them, even the one with fabric got rid of floss. It's stupid IMO and sends me to Hobby Lobby, which has also downsized it's fabric dept. The nearest real fabric shop is about an hour away from my house. I hate that!

Nope. Never looked good to me.

Any meats I've bought at Walmart were pretty much tasteless. I buy my meats (and most of my groceries) at a local family owned grocers. They have a butcher..and they meats are always fresh packaged.

Years ago when our first Walmart opened up, I bought a chuck roast there. Later that day when I cooked it, my husband (who was raised on a farm and butchered & ate their own meats) said that he could taste the milk in it and he refused to eat the rest. He told me to never buy Walmart meat again, that they do add something to their meats.

I don't buy meat from Walmart due to their marketing practices. They WILL shut down everything, except what they own. Free market will be gone if Walmart has their way.

Isn't it odd that they would sell meat that's so different from most supermarkets--and not in a good way! It's not particularly inexpensive, either.

Lots of people must be buying it, though; the meat case is large and full.

Tried some ground sirloin once -we couldn't/wouldn't eat the 'funny' tasting stuff!

Tiny little country store near us used to make such delicious burgers people drove from miles around
to get them & truckers lined both sides of highway
until a new owner took over. Meat in burgers tasted
like Wal-Mart concotion; customers dropped off drastically & store closed.

A Wal-mart butcher told me that virtually every cut of meat they offer comes in pre-packaged with whatever may be added already in it, but he was not privy to what it contained.

Never. I buy my meat from a grocery in the small town I grew up in; they even have their own butcher who grinds the hamburger, prepares the cuts of meat, ect.

I never bought their meat just because of the way it was packaged. The meat at our local Walmart is packaged in plastic containers that have lots of air in them and so I couldn't just buy their meat and put it in the freezer until I was ready to use it-it had to be taken our of their container and repackaged in mine or it would get freezer burn.
The few times I have bought it I had the same experience as everyone here-the taste is off.

The very few times I had Perdue chicken I didn't like it. I thought it was either I just got a bad batch or I cooked it poorly but I talked to said the same thing.

I don't buy meat at Walmart (or Sam's) but a lot of people do and brag how great it is and how cheap it is. I don't know, but then looking at some of the stuff people eat....

Oh, and you should never freeze meat in the original packaging. Always re-wrap it.

We buy meat at Walmart, Kroger and Publix and we prefer the meat from Walmart!!! Tastes better to us. It's always very good. DH buys the Walmart sausage and says he gets less fat than he does from the Jimmy Dean brand. Their bacon is very good too. I've heard lots of people say they don't like Walmart's meat so maybe our store just get better meat.

    Linda

I'll buy Sausage and bacon, smoked sausage, but not hamburger, roasts, etc.

Last pork roast there I bought was more like "mystery meat".

    I love Publix.

We have good meat at our local food stores. Not a fan of any Walmart brands, except paper. Target is cheaper on alot of things, like cereal, paper goods, etc, anyway here it is.

I never buy meat fromm Walmart. Once I was in a hurry and bought some hamburger to go in spaghetti sauce. It was awful. Completely tastelss. I don't even like the way they
package their meat...looks like dissecting trays.

I have been buying beef at Wal-Mart. DH and I have discussed how beef just isnÂt good anymore. It just never occurred to me that it was just Wal-Mart brand. I am so dumb. Thanks for the information. I will try another store this week. By the way, I think the solution is salt water to make the meat weigh more, so you pay more for it.

I've bought chicken there and it was OK. I don't like the way their beef looks or is packaged. Apparently a lot of others don't either - I never see many people looking at the meat. I usually buy at Krogers.

For meat we buy mostly from a butcher shop in town, or Safeway, or Albertson's. Never from WalMart, their produce is not so good either. Canned items okay and cheaper than other places.

I haven't looked at it closely, but what I did see seemed like brands I'd never heard of, processed meats--just stuff that didn't appeal to me.

In my area ALL the stores inject water (or something) into the meat. I can't make a decent chicken-fried steak with any of it because so much water cooks out of it. The hamburger doesn't brown very well because the water has to boil out first and by then the meat's already a little overcooked. I have started buying from a local meat business, one that butchers farmers' animals for them for so much a pound. It's a family business and their meat's a little more expensive, but the meat is locally grown and there's no injected water. An Oklahoma rancher told me that lots of large meat-packers inject water as a way to tenderize the meat, but that if it is aged the way it's traditionally supposed to be, it is not necessary to take that shortcut. I no longer buy whole chicken because it's packed in those same shrink-wrap bags that ham is and I think they add water (or "solution", whatever THAT is) into the cavity before they seal the bag. I poured out a cup of liquid from the last whole chicken I bought, and then more liquid cooked out of it while it cooked. If I wanted to buy water at meat prices, I'd buy it in a fancy bottle. I never buy meat at Walmart. I don't go there unless I have to as I'm trying to support my local grocery stores to help keep them from being run out of business.

We buy 95% of our meat from 3 local companies that have their own butchers, the meat is additive free and there is a huge difference in taste and consistancy.

I agree with Iowagirl2006, and because of that we do all that we can to avoid WalMart. They are single handedly destroying small town America, I detest that company.

Here in Texas we are getting ours from Market Basket. I one day cooked hamburger meat for tacos from Market Basket and the beef was wonderful the next time I got it from Walmart never again I can taste a huge diff. Market Basket has it's own butcher and Walmarts is all pre-packaged somewhere! STacy

Sorry but anyone that buys anything from Walmart deserves what they get.

    Cheap has never equaled good.IMO

Funny, you don't sound sorry, Kacee. :-)

I don't know about other meat, but their hamburger has so much liquid (whatever it is) that you have to buy double just for the shrinkage.

I got a Perdue roaster at Publix to make broth for noodles before T-giving and it was wonderful. The broth was really rich and yellow. (I know, not good for us but tasty, anyway.)

I'm another Publix fan--also a Sam's meat buyer. Never had bad meat from there. Just too much of it.

I don't buy meat at Wal Mart. When we got our first "super" Wal Mart, I asked to have a package of meat changed from four steaks to two. I was told they couldn't - it all comes in pre-packaged. That's when I decided no steaks from there. I tried the ground beef once and was very disappointed in the texture and taste - very bland.

Seems whenever WalMart comes to town, they have very low prices. As people get addicted to shopping there and some of the smaller local places go out of business, the prices seem to slowly start rising. I wish I could say I never shop there, but since it is the closest store to our home and on the way home from work, I do occasionally. But never for meat!

Got to respond to Kacee...cheap comment..

Here the meat at Wal Mart is twice as high as it is in the other local stores. I don't buy our meat from Wal mart because it is so much higher..

    and to Linda..

If I am not mistaken and I might be..the Sara Lee plant makes Jimmy Dean Sausage and also the Wal Mart brand. I will have to double check but I think that's right..(I know they used to)

    littlebit

littlebit, even tho they may make both sausage brands I wonder if the recipe is the same.

My husband works for Overhead Door here in town, they sell garage doors. Lowes sells Overhead doors much cheaper than he can sell them, and with good reason. They are NOT the same.

I agree with most everyone else. Walmart's meat doesn't look right and the little I've bought didn't taste right. I rarely buy meat so when I do I go to the meat counter at my local grocery store. I like the beef and pork with IOWA labels.

i like sam's club ground beef over costco, any day...have never bought it at wal mart...

My father used to work as a butcher, he said they spray chemicals on meat to make it look red. I have purchased hamburger (ground chuck) and it's red on top, but if you scrape it , it's brown underneath. Grosses me out! It smells okay but I generally won't use it. I'll buy chuck steak and grind it myself. I have a Hobart Kitchenaid mixmaster with meat grinder attachment.

Aren't Wal Mart and Sam's Club owned by the same company? Any time I've been in Wal Mart they had Sam's Club products. I don't buy meat at wal mart, too bright and too much "air" in the package. I don't trust it. I don't go to the Wal Marts around here much as no one seems to be able to speak English.

So nobody ever buys meat from Walmart? Come on.

The only meat I'll buy at WalMart is the frozen chicken breasts and shrimp from the seafood dept.

Sam's has good sirloin and pork, we will buy that there if we need it right then, also bigger bags of chicken breasts. We don't have to buy ground meat as we get buffalo from CO and venison from here.

I stopped buying meat at WalMart when they stopped cutting it in store. I did like how they used those deep trays that didn't leak meat juice, but we didn't like the taste of it. We're lucky, there are 2 local grocery stores within 12 miles of us that both have wonderful meat depts.

I have bought meat in Walmart and never noticed a difference from any other meat that I bought. I buy meat in several places including a local meat market. Our local Albertson's has meat specials every week and I buy a lot of meat from them. I am not a member of the Let's hate Wal-Mart club.

Every few years I try Walmart meats and disappointing every time. Just tried the organic grass-fed beef. Sounded good. Seriously toxic. Can any human consume this and stay healthy? Please don't buy this for you or your family.

I tried the W-M meat a few years ago and learned two things.

The chicken is very moist because they plump it up with water. It increases the weight. You can feel the soft watery-ness in the display case and it is dripping wet if you pick it up. If it is just barely cooked to safe temp, it will be moist from this water.

There are a lot of parts you can legally grind into beef and still call it beef. Including veins and connective tissue :-( :-( that is why their ground beef tastes like wet cardboard.

I will buy name brand sausages and bacon at W-M for DH.

it's crazy as we buy Sams club all the time and always get 90% lean hamburger...but then their stuff is labled black angus...I also buy those long pork loins...I do buy turkeys at either IF they're jennie-o brand...we had one package stew meat that wasn't great, but so far so good...it was really tough for us to adapt to mid west (Detroit) meat when we first moved here from ca...better luck!!

I haven't bought "fresh" meat from Walmart for years. There's just something about a store that doesn't have a butcher in store that's not right to me. I like to see the meat department cut and package their food. Plus, there's been so many meat recalls from Walmart, I just don't trust it.

I'm not a Walmart shopper often, I try to wait until I have a list and may go once every 4 months or so. Ours didn't add grocery with a remodel/enlarging until maybe 2 years ago, so I didn't join in this thread back in 2009.

I was in the store to fill my list, dental floss, light bulbs, several things and wandered into the grocery. I did find lots of brands to choose from if I'd been food shopping in canned and packaged foods, spices in particular had a few good buys - but I picked up a package of chuck eye steak that looked good, brought them home and DH grilled them.

We were doing almost like the 'Mikey commercial'....'You take the first bite'. 'No, you'. 'You try it first'. 'I'll go second' ;0) We did finally taste, they were fine. We ate them. I've never bought meat there again, not needing a round of indecision with my food.

I find their prices higher than my local grocery store with real, old-fashioned butchers. So I too skip "the round of indecision". :-)

WINCO foods is a good alternative. They sell organic meat less than Trader Joe's or Whole Foods or Sprouts. The prices are good and it's employee owned too. I do like Costco's tilapia that is a healthy river raised fish. No antibiotics, hormones, junky stuff fed to the fish.

If the meat doesn't look right, taste right, please don't eat it. Your health is more important. We need more high quality food choices not less.

I guess I am going to die. LOL I just fixed myself a Walmart pork chop for my dinner. To add to the horror I used Idaho flaked potatoes and had some frozen vegetables that include (the horror, the horror) water chestnuts from China. Cooking for one tonight. Tomorrow I will take the left over potatoes and make potato patties to have with eggs and bacon for breakfast.

Seriously, boxed meet is boxed meat whether it is in Walmart or a regular grocer. I don't care for any boxed beef cuts so other than burger or cheap cuts for marinating, I prefer to go to a meat market.Once in a while I will see a nice steak that is packaged that slipped through the cracks. I like Costco's ribeyes too. But red meat took a dive in quality as far back as the late 70's. That is when the healthy eating nuts wanted leaner beef. Then they finished the job with the grass fed malarkey.
