380,000 pounds of deli meats are being recalled

(CNN) -- Zemco Industries in Buffalo, New York, has recalled approximately 380,000 pounds of deli meat that may be contaminated with bacteria that can cause a potentially fatal disease, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Monday.

The products were distributed to Wal-Marts nationwide, according to the USDA's website.

The meats may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which was discovered in a retail sample collected by inspectors in Georgia. The USDA has received no reports of illnesses associated with the meats.

"Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease," according to the USDA. "Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. However, listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea.

"Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy," the USDA said.

Wal-Mart did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday from CNN.

The products subject to recall are:

-- 25.5-pound cases of "Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches BLACK FOREST HAM With Natural Juices Coated with Caramel Color" with the number 17800 1300.

-- 28.49-pound cases of "Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches HOT HAM, HARD SALAMI, PEPPERONI, SANDWICH PEPPERS" with the number 17803 1300.

-- 32.67-pound cases of "Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches VIRGINIA BRAND HAM With Natural Juices, MADE IN NEW YORK, FULLY COOKED BACON, SANDWICH PICKLES, SANDWICH PEPPERS" with the number 17804 1300.

-- 25.5-pound cases of "Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches ANGUS ROAST BEEF Coated with Caramel Color" with the number 17805 1300.

The meats were produced on dates ranging from June 18 to July 2, 2010. The "Use By" dates range from August 20 to September 10, 2010.

we just recently got an amana french door fridge with the wide shallow deli drawer that you describe and it's probably my favorite feature of this fridge. there's just tons of space in there. the fridge doesn't have an egg zone, so i put eggs in there, and after putting any meat and cheese that we have, there's still tons of space for other stuff. love it!

I love it, maybe because I don't think of it as just a deli/meat drawer, although it handles those foods too. I've used it so much that I'm relieved that it didn't break from too much weight. When something is easily crushed (or spilled, or knocked over) like boxes of berries, that's where I put it. Wide and relatively-flat things that can't take being stacked-upon, like cakes and cheesecakes, also go there. The front of the drawer is visible when closed, so it's a handy place to stick appetizers and leftovers and small things like bags of baby carrots so they don't get pushed back and forgotten. While the FDs do require more care to close than a one-door fridge, I find it less effort to open the two narrower doors than to swing out one large one.

One suggestion on CBC Radio was that if we were at all worried about the validity of some meat which we had purchased recently, that we might want to throw it out. I react negatively to that, for if I do, all of the agencies that handled it from the processor on down get their usual profit on the sale. It seems to me that the processor, who produces about a third of the meat in Canada, needs to be taught a lesson, rather than be allowed to collect that profit. So I should return the meat to the store, asking the manager whether s/he can assure me that it is safe ... and if s/he says, "Yes", ask for that statement in writing. Otherwise, ask for my money back. In many cases, the stores just throw the goods out and often eat the loss ... but with a major case such as this, no doubt they will be yelling loudly at the manufacturer. If they get compensated ... why shouldn't I be? If the result is that the manufacturer goes broke ... maybe others will learn a needed lesson. Quite a number of products in the grocery are manufactured abroad, and I think that we should ask the managers of the stores what kind of safety standards those manufacturers must conform to. After all - my health, even my life, may be at risk. And some products say that they have been imported by such and such an agency. Yeah - imported from, where? Whose products must conform to what kind of safety standards? ole joyful ... thankful for the measure of health that he enjoys ... and wants to preserve it as long as possible

I would not freeze deli sliced ham. The reason is that is has so much water pumped into it that it can just turn in to a wet mess. It will defrost and you will be left with salty water and very tasteless ham slices. A non sliced ham is different in that it has not the same amount of surface area to release the water through. Not all deli meats are created equal. Something like salami is relatively dry and not subject to ice crystals.

Locally grown meat never makes anyone sick? We hear about large, corporate recalls and incidents of food related incidents because corporate concerns sell to so many more people, and such incidents are proportionately larger...more newsworthy to report that Walmart sold 60 tons of something and 60 people got sick than that Farmer Joe sold one ton of something and one person got sick. Plus, Farmer Joe probably wouldn't have the wherewithal to contact folks and recall whatever he sold.

I've got nothing against buying locally...I try to do a lot of shopping locally to promote my town businesses. But just because our Farmer Joes don't get the headlines doesn't mean that they are automatically producing healthier foods.

Thankfully I am never tempted by ready-made sandwiches. Deli meats have their place but mostly I find them all far too salty.

As for the local vs trucked-in-from afar argument: logic would dictate that, if nothing else, the foods produced regionally would potentially have far less exposure to mishandling and temperature abuses than something that travels from 2000+ miles away. That in itself makes the food safety more reliable in my mind. I make a reasonable effort to buy local, fresh food but am not manic about it.

I always wonder....what is "deli meat?"
Is sliced boiled ham deli meat, sliced pastrami? Corned beef? smoked turkey? Or is it just stuff like balogna or salami and stuff like that?
And since I never eat a ready made sandwich, never eat luncheon meat I guess this wouldn't concern me....but for one more thing for some to worry about.
Please tell me we really don't import meat from China....

Linda, I don't know if any meats come from China - though I wouldn't be surprised. They snuck in contaminated honey via shady distribution channels.

LindaC, I kind of lump all that "luncheon" meat, including sliced ham and beef, as "deli meats", not just salami/bologna/etc. I note that one of the sandwiches was roast beef, another ham, so...

As for buying local, I like to know where my food came from and who handled it, to the greatest extent I can. While that's not always possible, I try.

The biggest reason I never eat those deli meats, though, is that they always taste too salty to me, I just don't care much for them. And, unfortunately, I'll bet a lot of those sandwiches are destined for kid lunches for back to school, so I hope no one gets sick.

Not exactly on the subject of deli meats, but. . . I live in New York City and am fortunate enough to be in the Foodie Heaven part of West Side Manhattan. So, in addition to Zabar's, I also have Fairway only two blocks away, with its gigantic fish and meat department (Yes, there's Citarella right next door, but I don't shop there). For some time I've been getting catfish fillets from Fairway, and they were labeled as being farm-raised in the USA. Just a few days ago I was quite disgusted, when I went for my catfish, to see them labeled "Product of China." Sadly, no
more catfish for me until they get back to the USA source, if indeed they ever do.

Well, I agree with those posters who scorn "deli meats" based on their quality (or lack thereof.) I far prefer to slice up my own chicken/ham/roast beef etc. Plus, it's cheaper!

Barnmom does make a good point, regarding local meats having less potential for mishandling, etc. But I'd like to see a study or three weighing the points. Locally raised may have fewer possibilities for exposure, but are there also fewer points of inspection?

I would like to see, for example, how the incidences of food borne illnesses compare, statistically, between folks who raise their own chickens for meat/egg consumption and folks who buy at the store.

My point is not that store bought IS better...I just won't buy into the popular idea that local/natural/organic/more expensive/small farm raised foods are better just because they are local/natural/organic/more expensive/small farm raised foods. People have died of food borne illnesses since human beings first ate food...

I don't raise chickens for eggs because they're necessarily safer, I raise them becau8se they taste better and if food doesn't taste good, what's the point.

In addition, I want to know that chicken had a reasonably comfortable life, since the only purpose for its existence is to end up on my dinner plate, and commercial chicken farms are horrendous places.

So my choice has little to do with safety and much to do about how we treat creatures on this earth. It also has to do with the amount of resources used just to truck the stuff across the country to me. Getting a chicken from across the road is faster and more efficient than having one shipped several thousand miles.

I don't have to worry about any deli items from Wal-Mart because I don't buy them. I never have. Since I saw that mouse there I only buy lightbulbs, bath tissue and paper towels. Please tell me I can't et an illness from those. ; )

beverlyal- do you really think Walmart is the only place that has rodents? I can almost guarantee that where ever you but your food has rodents too. It's basically unavoidable for most stores. You may tell yourself that there are not any vermin where you shop if it makes you feel better- but trust me they're there.

I don't buy packaged meats, or supermarket "deli" meats and I sure don't buy ready made sandwiches from WalMart !

However I love the "deli" meats from our local German, Italian, Polish and Hungarian delicatessens. Wonderful salamis of every type, kielbasa, hams, sausages, mortadella, pastrami etc. To me those are deli meats !

On rye, on sourdough, different types of mustards, dill pickles on the side. YUM!

Sharon, if we had local grocers and delis here, I'd buy from them too, the small neighborhood type meat places. Ashley used to love the Italian sandwiches they made from the deli at GB Russo's in Grand Rapids.

Here I'm pretty much limited to Eckrich, Oscar Mayer and those little packaged of dried up stuff from Buddig.
