The Kitchen Table

My after Christmas menu set for 12:00, Sat.

cheese shrimp and grits

blueberry salad

smoked sausage with cranberry and cocktail sauce

scotch eggs

Ham slices with hawaiian butter bread

oh and lots more.

Have a two year old and a three year old, so have moved fine stuff to a safe place.

My Christmas dinner got postponed to Saturday also, because of the weather.

It won't be the variety like yours though; just the usual Turkey and trimmings, green beans, sweet potato casserole, ambrosia, Broccoli/cheddar soup and I don't know what else. Oh, and a Birthday cake for my DGD whose birthday was December 9th.

Better late than never.

No toddlers in my family any more. I really miss that.

Glenda that sounds so yummy!
We are off to MIL's today. She is 90 so no cooking over there. We have a wonderful Cantonese Restaurant that we order in from on Boxing Day. It is so delicious! Then there will also be shrimp, cheese & crackers, fruits and dips etc. It's easy, tasty and doesn't require alot of cleanup so we and MIL can relax and enjoy each others company.

I am getting things potted up for the swap. I am focusing on bringing a smaller number of larger trades this year. I stopped by a nursery to find some cheap pots and talked them into selling me some of their 6" square pots (probably about 1/2 gallon ones) for $.20 each. Last year Oakland Park had nice 4" ones for $.09 each, but they didn't carry them this year. So far I have rhubarb, chocolate mint, lemon balm, spiderwort, lamb's ear, evening primrose, Golden Tiara hosta, misc. var. hosta, and Michaelinsis daisy potted up into 1/2 gallon or larger pots. I also have quite a few small starts of Penny's Worth daylily, a nice little daylily with yellow flowers. It kind of looks like a miniature version of Happy Returns. I also have plenty of tomatoes. I have about 60 varieties started this year. Some I only have a few of, but many of them I will have extras of to bring to the swap. We will be potting up some other things to bring as well. We usually bring the dogs into Columbus with us when we visit. But I don't see how they will fit in the van with all of the plants. It looks like we will have to leave them with friends for the weekend. We are looking forward to seeing everyone on the 15th. James

Peggy, thank you for the inspiration. I read your post yesterday and thought, all I need to clean is the linen closet. We have been inside due to all the cold weather and have been complaining that I cannot get out and exercise. After reading your post it got me to thinking, I can exercise in the house by cleaning out the linen closet. It was amazing what I took out of the linen closet, Took all the blankets and spreads to the animal shelter, they didn't need the towels so we took those over to a thrift store that funds a cancer hospital for children. I feel so good knowing that I got everything cleaned and out of the house. Also got my exercise, climbing up and down the ladder going into the closet. We have 12 foot ceilings, so we have lots of closet space. Thanks for giving me the inspiration to get started. Going to bed feeling good about my day.

I hosted a large-ish family group yesterday and also kept life low key today. Went to Pilates this morning, then came home and after a nice long chat with my daughter we put away most of the dishes and serving pieces from yesterday. Snacked on some leftovers, finished the last 2 episodes of Orange is the New Black which I just discovered, then more leftovers for dinner, and now off to read a bit then early to bed. No shopping, no maniacal clean up, not much except relaxing! I won't say I resent it, because I do it every year, but sometimes I do think that since in my family there are only 2 of us (stepmother and me) who always put on these major holiday gatherings-boy, does everyone else get off easy! I had about 20 family members here yesterday and although I did appreciate several of the guests who pitched in to help, as hostess it was just an incredibly busy and hectic and intense experience to manage it all. In a debriefing call tonight, my stepmother, who is a retired professor of occupational therapy and thus very tuned in to effective work systems, commented that in a sense, hosting these parties is almost like turning your home into a restaurant...except there isn't a staff! Since I always think that somehow if I planned things right I would be able to effortlessly run these shindigs, this perspective really made me feel better about how exhausting it always is. After all, if I had a hostess to get everyone greeted and seated, and chefs to get all the food prepped, cooked and plated, and waiters to help take out and bring back the food and beverages, and dishwashers to clean it all up,...life would be ever so much easier wouldn't it?! Ah well, it was a very nice gathering and I've still got tomorrow and all of next week for me time. Which I *will* be taking, thankyouverymuch. Might go see The Wolf of Wall Street tomorrow and American Hustle is on the agenda too. Some shopping once the stores calm down a bit. Some reading, some relaxing, can't wait for my holiday to really kick in! Ann

Yes, welcome to the forum Sameboat!! I joined about 8 years ago when I was stressing over my first time hosting a holiday dinner in my new house. And I was 44 years old so NOT a new cook or hostess but I'm mostly vegetarian and my family asked for organic turkey. Now what did I know about cooking a turkey??!! Folks here held my hand and were so friendly and nice I stayed. And I am a firm believer in the school of thought that Chase mentioned, food tastes best when served in a warm, relaxing manner by a happy hostess!! There's a whole bunch of us here who are all into short cuts, low cal, low carb, high carb, store bought, "inexpensive", whatever floats your boat, no apologies!! Diversity is the spice of life and the spice of the kitchen! So take your shoes off (I don't want mud tracked in now!) ;) and stay a while!!

Glenda, make sure and update us, on how it went.

My daughter just left, and called back and said the roads were mostly icy, some places slush, and lots of cars in the ditches.

Me thinks, I will wait till about 4, to go to hancocks. They have a sale, and I have a 40% off coupon, and two new books for knitting hats and toys for little girls. I feel the need to get busy.

I fixed a large brunch yesterday--so much in fact neither of us thought it was worth cooking Christmas dinner, since neither of us was hungry. So we're having it tonight.

It's:

Prime rib
Roasted red potatoes
Green beans almadine
Rolls
Pumpkin pie

I feel much more like eating it today.

That was the best shrimp and grits, I think I have ever had.

arghhhhhhhhhh, everyone had a cough, one of the little ones threw up.

Gotta disinfect every square inch I can, and just took an airborne effervescent.

Glenda,what's in Bluebeery salad?? I love anything blueberry.

We also had prime rib yesterday and chicken and some ham .Mashed taters & gravy,sweet potato casserole,corn,hawaaiian rolls,2 kinds of cranberry sauce,and my dil's mom brought a platter of sushi,lumpia and something else that escapes my brain right now.We also have/had sweet potato pie,pumpkin pie,cherry pineapple cobbler,and of course lots of cookies.We had about 15 people here,and a good time was had by all.
