That terrible fire in Connecticut reminds us........

......about fireplace/woodstove safety.

A house fire in Connecticut on Christmas killed three little girls (sisters) and their grandparents. I heard on the news that the cause of the fire was a bucket of fireplace ashes. Apparently they were shoveled from the fireplace into the bucket, and of course the ashes were mixed with live coals. The bucket was left somewhere in the house.

I heat mostly with wood, and my son instructed me long ago to take the ash bucket out of the house and away from the porch. I set it out on a slab of rock until the coals die and I can scatter the ash on our dirt road. It seems a good time to post a reminder about this.

What a horrible fire. It's hard even to read about it.
