Got mine out when the lights go out, tonite!

Mine aren't are pretty as this one, but they sure come in handy when there is a power outage.

I have to miniature ones and a large one.

Power generally goes out with high winds.

Have my flashlight by my bed and my battery travel fan. I'm ready!

It's lightning and thundering, rain and more rain, still 63 outside. I'm prepared!

Hi..I have one plumie so far and living in South Central Vermont; the weather was actually warmer (hotter) in April this year than it has been for the past 3 weeks at least; damp, cool, rainy...temps are usually no higher in the daytime than 70ish if we're lucky..the mid 60s is more the average!...nights have been below 50...mid 40s. So I have been bringing mine inside at night not wanting it to get cold. It does have one inflo and some small but growing leaves on the 2nd branch and I don't want to "endanger" that progress. I wonder if it will ever be warm enough for it to bloom! The former has never had any blooms at all. The growth progress seems rather slow. I haven't fertilized it as yet. From some of the responses above I should be leaving it outside at night..is that correct and will fertilizer help promote growth...leaf or blooms and what kind etc is best. Thanks for any help.

I would have no idea how to connect a generator or where to put one. I've never lived anywhere that had basements, except for the summers I spent in Vancouver. I've never had food in a freezer spoil because of a power outage partly because they have never lasted long enough and partly because I do not store things in the freezer that are that sensitive - mostly I have frozen vegetables and whole grain flours, but occasionally ice cream, which I would have to eat in case of a long power outage. Saturday we bought new flashlights and lanterns, all with LED lights. One flashlight plugs into the wall and then turns itself on when the power goes off. We have that in the dining room, which is a central location and will be easy to find from anywhere in the house (except the bedrooms). We got another flashlight that is solar powered but also has a hand crank, and so batteries are not needed. The third one is another headlight, but it puts out more light than the other ones that I have. I used it last night to find chilies to pick for the bok choy soup that I made. Kevin's cell phone put out quite a bit of light, but I do not have one, although I have a lap top that is quite bright. Our internet service does not work when the electricity is off, and neither do our landline phones, and so I need to get an old phone from the garage to keep in the house for when there is no electricity. We do not have frost here, and so our pipes are in no danger of bursting. Some of the succulents that I grow outside are hardy only to 38 degrees, and they do fine here in the winter, as do basil and tomato plants. Lars

The blue wire is from the old cieling fan . And someone previously posted the blue was ground And there is the reason you should be hiring an electrician. Blue wires are typically "hot" for the lights in the ceiling fan. When you hooked it up to the bare ground wire from the fixture, you create a short and tripped the breaker. However, you never really know unless you have a pro look at how things are wired. Be careful taking advice from the internet on issues that could cause you home to catch for or create a danger for you and your family.

I hope, the electric won't go out. This fireplace here is "just for looks", and there is no heat if no electric, even so we have gas. Need electric to get the fan blowing.

Thank goodness we still have kerosene and that heater.

Hope I won't need to get it out.

Last night we had wind at 41 mph and gusts of 60 mph. It was howling and windy most of the day today. Hopefully I will get a good nights sleep tonight.

I use oil lamps also, and have two minis that are easy to carry from room to room. Also have a camp lantern that runs on batteries. Now I need a battery operated digital TV. I had an analog one that was perfect, got three or four channels so I could at least watch the news (and weather reports) and Wheel Of Fortune. ha.

CVS has a battery operated one, LCD 7" screen, for $89. I think I only paid $20 for my analog one.

I'd rather have the wind than the cold, power outages are miserable though! We get so many high winds on the bluff where our home is, but cold just gets your full attention.

I have an oil lamp too. we used it just recently. I have an old mirror triptych that I put behind it and it really lights up a room!
