Got mine out when the lights go out, tonite!

Mine aren't are pretty as this one, but they sure come in handy when there is a power outage.

I have to miniature ones and a large one.

Power generally goes out with high winds.

Have my flashlight by my bed and my battery travel fan. I'm ready!

It's lightning and thundering, rain and more rain, still 63 outside. I'm prepared!

I agree... I water my seedlings about once a week. Also, I do not have any heat in the room where the plant stand is. The room stays at around 65-68F daily. I find that if they are watered more than once a week, the seedlings don't grow as well. I've never had much trouble with my seedlings using this method. I check them every day. The timer is an excellent idea. I use a heavy duty timer from my Christmas Light display. I works great. The lights are on for around 10 hours a day. I only run 2 florescent lamps off of it but that's all I need.

Ever see ad for clunky little gadgets that slip on like eye glasses? There are two little lights at the temples. Years ago I got one. Not wonderful, but they did help a couple times when had to do some night harvestings. The problem was wearing "specs" at the same time. Think I like the headlamp idea much better.

I don't have a picture, but did get my picture taken with the hostess. If it's any good, I'll post when she sends it to me. Lots of people, awesome catered foods, by her mother who caters! So food was outstanding and BEAUTIFULLY presented. T'was nice to get out! And to feel good dressed up!

I don't really know about the energy used in making the CFs, and I have no clue where to find out, sorry. No doubt some energy is used in shipping them from China, where practically all of them are now made. But then quite a few incandescent bulbs are made overseas too, so maybe that's a wash. Lighting uses about 15% of US home electricity consumption. That may not sound like much, but it's the largest share of any single item except for air conditioning (which is 16.5%). That's why changing to more efficient lighting is one of the easiest ways to reduce home electrical consumption (and cost). This is where I might also point out that the air leaks from swiss-cheese recessed light ceilings waste that cool air in the summer, too. Another reason not to install recessed lights. Water heating is just over 9% of home consumption, and space heating is just under 9% (remember that a lot of houses have fuel-burning heat and the electricity consumption is only for the fans and such). Check the link below, it has this and all kinds of interesting information, including stuff that I never knew. For example, someone told me years ago that 20% of the electricity generated is wasted as heat in the power lines. Must be true, that's why birds sit on power lines in the winter, to get warm, right? Wrong! My friend was way off. According to the DOE, the average national loss is only 6.5%. I think that's pretty amazing when you consider how many millions of miles of transmission line criss-cross the country. Here is a link that might be useful: DOE Electricity FAQ

I hope, the electric won't go out. This fireplace here is "just for looks", and there is no heat if no electric, even so we have gas. Need electric to get the fan blowing.

Thank goodness we still have kerosene and that heater.

Hope I won't need to get it out.

Last night we had wind at 41 mph and gusts of 60 mph. It was howling and windy most of the day today. Hopefully I will get a good nights sleep tonight.

I use oil lamps also, and have two minis that are easy to carry from room to room. Also have a camp lantern that runs on batteries. Now I need a battery operated digital TV. I had an analog one that was perfect, got three or four channels so I could at least watch the news (and weather reports) and Wheel Of Fortune. ha.

CVS has a battery operated one, LCD 7" screen, for $89. I think I only paid $20 for my analog one.

I'd rather have the wind than the cold, power outages are miserable though! We get so many high winds on the bluff where our home is, but cold just gets your full attention.

I have an oil lamp too. we used it just recently. I have an old mirror triptych that I put behind it and it really lights up a room!
