I'm having a bad evening...can I whine?

It is so cold outside. The snow has quit and the winds have laid down some, but we don't have heat in our master bedroom. I hate zone heating. We never wanted it in the first place but got stuck with it. Ours probably burped because of those power blips this morning. The unit is all electronic, and we are way too familiar with the circuit board, but we've done all we know to do. *sigh* What do you think the odds are that I'll get someone out to look at it Monday? Riiiightt...

I started a post about this on my PC and my computer locked up. Gee, that's always fun. NOT!

I am a nice fur-mama so I let my five outdoor cats stay in the garage today and tonight. We fixed them up a litter box and they are using it, but P-U! Maybe it's just me, but I think I can smell it in my house!

OK, I'll shut up now. *sigh* I'm glad it's almost time for bed.

Have a cup of hot cocoa, put a warm quilt on your bed, snuggle up to DH and tomorrow will be a better day.

Here's my take. I know we all have our preferences but I never blame a medium for problems. That is just me. Here again, however, we have a testimonial from someone who deciding that their mix is too 'soggy' repots into something more open but then experiences continued problems now perhaps due to too dry conditions leading to brittle, dead, roots that don't develop. The unassisted (by artificial light) west window is at once too much light and too little! Your area can see frequent clouds and I suspect an atlas would show your locale receiving less than 180 clear days out of 365. IMO this is too little for good growth of anything but 'low light' species. OTOH when the sun 'is' shining and temps are up in the mid-80's possibly higher that is too much, even I admit that. The only recourse is to shade away the worst of the natural light. What is left will not cause heat stress or scorch but neither will it be able to put size into a p-bulb. The difference must be made up artificially. If someone knows of another way I would like to hear it. When orchids stall, sulk or otherwise go on strike the reason will always be found outside of the pot. Too litttle (rarely too much) light, too little or too much heat, too little or too much ventilation... external causatives. Water 1x/wk for a plastic pot, 2x/wk for a clay pot regardless of what is in it and call it good! Do not spray or mist or otherwise try to 'top up' orchid pots. That way lies madness and also root rot. With experience will come the ability to experiment in ways that will not harm your plants. Until then its best to follow some rules. They won't always be a perfect fit but they work for quite a lot of growers new and old. H

Ok, don't lob a snowball at my head but for some reason this year I am not in the whiney pre-spring stage. This winter has seemed to go by fast and while I am of course looking forward to spring, I am not in the least unhappy with winter. We're going through some of our coldest temperatures right now as usual, with overnights well below zero - but I'm ok. What I am most happy about is that suddenly the days seem appreciably longer. I love being able to watch the sunset through the bare trees *from home!* instead of seeing a bit of it as I drive my 40 minute commute home and then have it be darkening as I pull in the drive. Still, a pot of mini roses to fuss with wouldn't be a bad thing at all. I've done that before and ended up with as many as 5 nice little plants that went outdoors in spring to become a pretty border to my front flower bed. Hmmm...I'll have to go shopping after work today. :-)

'I don't hear you.' Say that kind of thing with utter calm. Don't respond to or mention whining at that point. Give him a chance to self-correct. 3 1/2 year olds are not very sophisticated and can have behavior habits and patterns like anyone else. He may not 'get' what you mean, so if you get more whining you may have to clarify. Again, with utter calm and no animation, this time try 'We don't speak like that, ask nicely.' Basically tailor the message to your needs. It is mainly essential to be utterly consistent once you decide to not hear whining. He has to get used to this new reality _as well as_ change his habitual pattern. There will be some 'testing' but that's a good thing. Be clear about what you want. Things that can interfere with success in this area are inadvertent rewards or intermittant reinforcements. He learns that if he whines 'enough' it turns into a game and you act silly and make him laugh and he feels better (everyone does with a good laugh). You can replace that pattern with one where, when he speaks well he gets not only a more timely response to his requests but also a hug (or you could act silly then, because he probably really likes that and if it gives you both a laugh then you both will feel better). It's hard because even though he's young, 'you' cannot stop his whining. He has to stop his whining. You can do things that will encourage it, and you might feel somehow responsible for it (his behavior) but it is not yours to control. You can change your behavior and maintain consistency so that his behavior will then change.

Do you maybe have an electric blanket. If not, you might want to invest in one tomorrow.

I just have a full size bed, and just use a twin size blanket on it as it doesn't need to hang off the mattress any.

I'd think a full size might fit a queen size bed just fine, unless you wanted/need it to have 2 controls. I don't think they come that way on full sizes.

I love the bedroom cold, and the bed warm when I get in.

Sue...hoping you get fixed up soon.

Sorry you're having problems...our heat hasn't even been on today.We still use a fan at night.It is chilly now but not bad.
I've just been busy making an A$$ out of myself all day! LOL! Someone has to do it,might as well be me!

Rita, I sure hope, you figured out a way to sleep warm, in that cold room.

I had a slipping and sliding drive to and from the airport this evening, but got the "kids" home.

We all had a nice supper of potato soup and baguette, and sat around and visited. Now, the older daughter is back at her apartment and everyone else is snoozing.

I came here to get my evening fix, and will then turn in as well.

Hope you are warm.

Well, I got over my whine five minutes after my head hit the pillow. (Zzzzzzzzzzzz) LOL! I turned the fan on in all zones so that the warm air would circulate through that room, and I plugged in my electric blanket. I even slept in until 7:00 today! I'm pretty sure THAT alone will make the sky fall. :-) I never sleep that late...

It's supposed to warm up into the 30s today and maybe the 40s tomorrow and Tuesday, so I'll see when the H/A people can come out and fix this darn thing. I'm thinking about having them fix it for good - as in, change it over to ONE zone operated with ONE thermostat. Electronic stuff - whether computers or cameras or TVs or whatever - is such a blessing and such a curse at the same time!
