I feel your pain. Mine is still growing out.

It seems that lately the hairdressers just don't pay attention or even care what WE want! I too am having trouble finding one that cares and does not go cut, cut cut--oops-oh well it will grow out--or it looks so good--yea right!!

Mamie is long gone so I'm sure she doesn't mind!! I have the same problem with hair cuts. The latest hairdresser has been pretty good, finally!! I have been seeing her about a year. Last time, though, it was a little off! My problem is that I get the scissors and start hacking on it if I don't like it one day!!

I had such a bad haircut a few years ago, it took me 2 years to get it done in a salon again. I cut it myself instead. I did the same: showed her the picture. This picture shows my hair after it had grown for two months! It was so short, I could not hold it between my fingers to curl it. I would try to use hair gel, pommade AND hairspray to try to 'lift' it to make it look less boyish. My hair is so thin and fine, it would just fall back down. I didn't realize until I got home just how short this girl cut my hair. Less than 1 inch long and the longest point! I will never go back to a Chatters Salon AGAIN. I now go to a small salon, and have used all the hair stylists in it at one time or another. I've yet to have a bad haircut.

Susan, I know how you feel. I am the same way. I'd rather go to a dentist then a hairdresser! It will grow, but if your like me it will take some time :^(

The last time I got my hair cut I asked my stylist if I could tell her what I wanted. She said I could but then she would do what was best for my hair. I wanted a short shag, I got a long bob. Needless to say, I now wear my hair in a ponytail and am afraid to go to anyone for a haircut.

That's too bad because I know how much you liked your last haircut. I was the one who was a hair model that loved the haircut I got but then I decided to go a little shorter and oh my goodness, I'm not liking my hair at all either. It's too short and talk about short bangs, I don't know what she was thinking. Thank God they grow fast. I'm going back to my old hair dresser. I thought I needed a change in hair dresser's but I don't think I have the patience for someone to learn what I like and don't like.

Got my hair cut, yesterday, for upcoming trip. Yikes, it's short. Hope it gets a growing spurt by next week.

Could it be that with the recent cataract surgery you now can finally see how it really looks? ;-)

At least you look good in short hair, debbie. My hair is so long right now, but I haven't been able to wear my hair short since I was a teenager. My face is too fat or something,and short hair seems to make by big boobs look even bigger. I used to wear a shoulder length curly perm for years and years when I worked; but when I retired I quit the perms, and my hair got really healthy again. Trouble is, curly is the only thing that looks good on me.

I've been setting my hair on foam rollers and getting a nice effect, but now it needs trimmed so badly that I can set it and the curls last about two hours before I have straight hair again. Just too long and straggly. My Mom says she doesn't like to see long hair on older women (I'm 58). :(

I used to go to José Eber's salon in Beverly Hills when I needed my hair cut or permed. But, for many, many years now it's just too far to drive for a haircut! I'd been going to a stylist up here (Sacramento area) who did a great job with my hair, but she moved out of the state... So, for quite a few years now I've cut my own hair. I do a decent job of it, and if I'm unhappy with it I've no one to blame but myself... :-)

Tell me about it...I don't know HOW many times I've told hairdressers I don't want it too short, because, like you, I have curly hair and it gets shorter as it dries. They start talking and hacking.....they seem to cut less when there is no conversation and they can concentrate on what they're doing. I seldom get a good cut, and I know not to get a haircut within three or four weeks of an important event.

Oh that's such a bummer when you don't like your haircut. I remember someone posting a cute picture of their haircut a while back - that must have been you.

I've been going to the same hairdresser for about 23 years. The thought of switching to someone else is horrifying. I just went in last week and said I needed something different and shorter after too many years of various bobs. I was a little worried about how it would work out - mainly my ability to style it - but it's been great. Guess that's why I've been going to the same person for so long and pay her going rate whatever it is.

Bless your heart! I've had so many bad haircuts form so many different stylist I started telling everyone I was a Salon HO...because I'd been s@rewed by them all! Finally found a girl that UNDERSTOOD what I was saying when I told her what I wanted. She cut my hair for about 7yrs....until her husband was critically injured when a tree limb fell on him (April 28,2010). I had to find someone else and now have a girl that comes to the house (known her for years). She does "OK"...and I can live with it.

Why couldn't you go to the stylist who gave you the last hairstyle that you liked? I've been following my current hairstylist all around for the past couple years. She doesn't stay in one salon very long. I even had her come to my house a few times when she was between jobs. The last haircut she gave me wasn't all that great... she's working at Great Clips now and I feel like I'm getting the standard cut she gives everyone.

The worst haircut I ever got made me look like a female version of Donald Trump.

Oh my gosh I laughed so much! Look, have you washed it yet? It will be better after you work on it yourself. Why didn't you go back to the person who did it before and you liked it?

I never like my hair when I come from the hairdresser. She makes my look like I have a hair helmet on. I usually pull over on the way home and brush it all out. It looks good in a week after it grows out a little.

You could go to another beautician and have the cut fixed up, but it might be really short.

Alisande, I can feel your pain. The past few days, I've been pulling my hair to make them grow longer, faster... LOL. This thread is so comforting. I don't feel alone anymore.

I've learned through the years that although, many knows how to cut the basic hair styles, they don't know how to cut bangs. For this reason, I always cut my own bangs.

Alisande, you may want to purchase a flat brush. When your hair is damped, using that type of brush to blow your bangs will straighten the bangs. As long as your bang is long, no matter how short your hair is in the back, you'd still have the feminine look and not the little girl look.

Yes, Bumpkin, I've often referred to myself as a salon slut. I think my DD gave me that name. LOL

I did go back to the guy who gave me the cut I liked. This was in February or March. I even brought a picture of me with the good cut--the same picture I posted here. Maire_Cate had given me the idea. It was an excellent idea, but unfortunately not foolproof.

As Redcurls said above, stylists tend to do better when they're not distracted by conversation. When he gave me the first cut, he was silent throughout. The second time he was engaged in conversation with somebody about hair dryers. The resulting cut was crooked, as well as too short on top and too long on the bottom.

So after hacking away at the bottom for a couple of months, I thought it was time to have a pro tidy it up for me. I couldn't have been clearer about what I wanted. The stylist's own hair was wretched, which sent up a red flag, but the salon where she worked has always hired good people, so I had some faith in them--foolishly, as it turned out.

I just read ntt_hou's post. Yes, this thread is definitely comforting. I'm glad I posted--I don't feel so alone either.

I straightened my bangs with a curling iron, but in this weather they don't stay straight for long. Besides, I honestly don't know which is worse, as even straightened they only come to the middle of my forehead.

Take a look at this picture, taken when I was 16. I'm the blonde (possessively clutching my boyfriend's hand). Every time I see this picture I'm reminded of why I always tell stylists, "Long bangs, please. Long bangs!" LOL

Try not to use a curling iron to straighten your hair. That's what curling iron do... curls your hair, even if you're trying to curl them in the opposite direction, your hair wont' stay straight for long. Try the straight brush but buy a large one, similar to the one at the link below.

I had one good hairdresser in my life and we moved. That was in the 60's, and I had the perfect Vidal Sassoon cut with the long glossy bangs and geometric cut. Never found another good cutter. I have not been to a hairdresser in 29 years. The last time I wanted a bob as I always have worn and still do. I stressed long in front gradually shorter in the back. I have worn this since the 60's . My hair was long then and gradually I wore it shorter over the years. This last guy did the complete opposite and made me look like Toni Tennile. Shorter in front and longer in the back. So I have cut my hair my self ever since, and I can't be mad at anyone if it doesn't turn out. My hair gets curlier the older I get and this weather is a big problem. I mostly wear a baseball cap. I can cut it just about right and my daughter trims the middle of the back up in a small layer. I have never had a perm in my life nor had my hair colored so I can handle the cutting and don't have to stress out.

The good news is....in a few weeks all will be well again. When I go to the hairdresser I stress do NOT cut my bangs. I will take care of it. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

Oh, that's awful! I have a stylist I've been going to for years and like a lot, but even she cut my bangs too short two cuts ago. I have a high forehead, and it wasn't pretty.

She knew it, too. A couple weeks ago, I went back for another cut. I told her not to cut the bangs, and she checked and was horrified to see that they were at the right length only after a month! On the upside, she gave me a great cut that works with my hair, so I'm happy now.

Yes I know the feeling I went about a month ago I said I want a few highlights to me a few is about 6 strands of here ,here and there.When she was done it was a stripe down the side of my head 3"wide bright blonde,Mine is dark brown.So I told her Im not leaving here like that.She toned it down.
I also said I need my hair trimmed I need about 1 1/2" removed from ends I SAID I DONT LIKE SHORT HAIR...When she was dpone it was 4" long all around.I could have cried but everybody likes it.I take vitamins that helped but it already grew about an inch.take vitamins

I always keep my hair short, and just go to the walk-in salons. I've had good cuts, and my hair grows fast anyway. The last time I told the guy I wanted the top 2" (I hate long hair on the top of my head, it's so thick and heavy) Anyway, he cut and cut and he cut it 2" all around. When he took the first couple snips I knew it was short, but what could I say, after it was done.

Anyway, I was mortified, but didn't complain. Hubby went in a couple days later to get his cut (his is easy to cut and they love his hair). 2 of the ladies asked how I liked my hair. He said that it's pretty short!! Anyway the next time I go in, I'm to ask for either one of those ladies. Just last week I got my hair cut and asked for Carol, and she cut it for free. She spoke to the owner about how short my hair was and they didn't want to lose us as customers.

Like DebbyAB my hair is just flat to my head like a boy. When it's short on top it spikes up, but I have to use gel, and like to use a skinny curling iron to give it some lift and body.

I feel bad for you because I've had the "Mamie" before, and my hair also needs longer bangs as it curls in humidity. After getting your bangs as straight as you can, try sweeping them off to the side. Although I have a high forehead and wear my bangs down normally, when they were cut super short I found it looked better to brush them off my face as sideswept bangs. To do this I put a bit of styling gel in them when they were damp, and after blowing them straight, I sprayed just a light mist of hairspray on them after sweeping them to the side. The hairspray kind of kept them to the side and they didn't look as bad being so short that way.

My bangs were always like that growing up. Way short, and mine were always crooked coz I have a cowlick on one side. I tell every hairstylist leave the bangs alone, I'll do them.

I gave pics of front, sides and back of a hair style I wanted, I ended up with a Dorothy Hamil! No lie, I even said, what the hell is this Jenny? Not like the pictures at all. She said, "Oh but it looks so cute on you." I was pissed. I told her, well as long as YOU like it, that's what counts. Never went back.

I mostly cut my hair myself, found a video on youtube that shows how to cut layers in your hair. Get DH to cut the back straight across, then lift the top layer and cut the bottom layer a little shorter. I can live with it.

I'm sorry you hate your haircut. We all know that a bad cut that any of us gets will grow back, but it stinks that you have to wait for that to happen.

I had a hairdresser cut my bangs too short once, it was right before I had my first child so I have lots of pictures of me to remind me!

My hairdresser always cuts my hair dry, it works better for my hair.

I hate to go to salons they always sem to do something wrong.. The last time I did get a pretty good cut then from then on I use my Flobbie hair cutter. With it you just put a length attachment on it and bounce it over your hair keeping the style but just cutting the ends. And while you are cutting it it vacuums the hair. a little noisy but works I think you can still buy them I haven't seen them Flobbies advertised on TV for years .i

A clipper with attachments in back
(it's actually my dogs clippers)
Every once in a while I go in to have it
straightened up if I've made it crooked.
It's blond, straight, oily and fine with little body,
I like to wash and put curlers on top every night.
Of course I need to use gel and lots of hairspray too...

Even the movie stars get a bad cut. Ever notice on Home Improvement when Jill had 1" bangs? It looked horrible.

I had one of those "one inch all over" cuts right before my DDs wedding. I went in and said... just trim it, a bit. Came home and cried my eyes out. The stylist i use now does okay. I end up with some version of a bob most times. I have cowlicks and my hair is thinning at the temples, she says there is not much else she can do with it. I do come out of there with Old Lady Helmet Head, have to go home and brush it good. I am afraid to go somewhere else....................

Oh my Susan - love the photo but you're right about the bangs - it almost looks like you're wearing a wig and it's slipping off the back of your head.

But I can't laugh because I had a haircut in 8th grade and the stylist cut my bangs that short and on the way home I tripped and skinned my chin. The following day was class photos for graduation. Bummer.

In the nest town 9 miles over I go to a lady who has her shop right in her home. I pay 15 dollars thats including a small tip> For years now I tell them I want my hair cut 2 or 2 1/2 inches long all over. I never get a bad haircut. I usually get it cut about every 6 or 8 weeks. Now since I have psoriasis I have to have it a little longer in the back on the bottom to cover that up. She has leukemia though so I dont know how long she will be able to keep doing it. I have gone all over for a haircut but if I tell them how I want it cut I have no problem. My hair grows fast. Once in a while I'll cut it in between myself because it gets to long. I also cut my husbands hair. We bought a clipper at Target to do it and I do a pretty good job. Except for the time we were going to Canada for an INTERNATIONAL CLOGGING CONVENTION and I scalped him in one spot in the back and when it came time to do the NATIONAL ANTHEMS he had to go in the bathroom because he couldnt take his cap off. His hair grows fast too. It is easier to cut if it isnt too long though.

I have actually held onto my bangs so they wouldn't get cut. LOL Honestly, I don't know what's so hard to understand about "do not cut my bangs" but now I've found the PERFECT hair cut gal and she's retired and either comes to my house, or I go to hers. There are 3 of us at the hospital that she gives cuts to. Fast, tax free cash for her and perfect cuts for us. I've never had one this good. It's so good that I spend about 10 seconds on it in the morning. Just hope she stays nice and healthy. LOL

I love this thread! Some of your stories are so funny, and all make great reading--especially now that I let my hair dry naturally right out of the shower tonight and am in full Mamie mode. :-)

Jasdip, somewhere above is a post in which I explained that the "good" hair stylist wasn't so good the second time around, so I went somewhere else.

Vannie, I may hold onto my bangs next time. Desperate times call for desperate measures.....

Ya'all just think your hair is short... I wore mine like this for about 5 years, now it's down to my shoulders and there's not a day goes by that I don't miss this hair cut but the girl that cut it for me disappeared and I don't know where she is.....

DBfirewife - want to say you look lovely and the short cut looked great on you! I have fine, thin hair and I like mine a little spikey so it doesn't fall flat. I agree it's hard to find someone who can give you a good short haircut like that.

I got a really bad haircut on March 17 and still don't have enough hair to get around my curling brush. I did what ntt hous said and tried pulling it but that didn't help.
