Like I Would Steal a Poinsettia!

My brother Paul took me to the store this afternoon to get some of my baking supplies so I could get a start on my baking since I haven't heard from my sister yet.

He took me to my brother David's store. I invited David to stop over during the holidays for tea and also invited my 2 adult nephews James and Davey to stop over with their girlfriends.

As I was going up and down the aisles Paul stood and talked to David when he wasn't busy wheeling his customers carts to their cars and helping them with their groceries. His customers love him and some have followed him from every store he managed or owned.

He gave Paul a big poinsettia plant for me and marked "no charge" on it.

When I was going through the checkout I mentioned to the cashier that my brother David gave me the poinsettia and wrote "no charge" on it and initialed it. She didn't believe me. Granted, I didn't look my best because my hair was all flat and I had no makeup on but I am not about to lie about a poinsettia. Maybe I looked shifty. LOLOL

I understand she was just doing her job but I think if I was going to steal something I wouldn't tell her about it and she could have inquired about it more discretely.

She still didn't beleive me so she went to another cashier and asked her about it. She told the cashier she better page my brother. Good grief! I held up the line because my brother had left the store and they couldn't find him.

Finally, she called my nephew Davey over and said "this lady" said there is no charge on this poinsettia plant" Davey looked over and said "of course there is no charge, she's my Aunt, why would she lie about a plant" LOLOL

Gosh, I felt pretty stupid while standing in the line and holding it up. I almost walked out without the plant but I really wanted it for my kitchen table. LOL

I don't pay for the bags either but I didn't bother mentioning that to the cashier.

The same cashier didn't say anything about the elderly women who emptied a box of clementines and stuffed at least a half a box of clementines to the box she already had. LOL All the cashiers saw that yet I was the one that was singled out. She was the one stealing not me. LOL I spent over $100, yet I was going to steal the poinsettia. LOL

Paul was surprised the girl gave me such a hard time and didn't believe me when I said David was my brother. Why would I admit to that if it wasn't true. LOLOL

LOL I guess we don't look alike.

So strange that she would do that! I can't believe she tied up the line when you were buying that many groceries. And that lady that stole the clementines...OMG! Now I would have definitely busted that one. No way would she have walked out of the store.

Sheeesh! Some people! Yes, she might have been doing her job but was a little overboard to say the least! Your brother marked it AND initialed it, what more did she need?

I bet the poinsettia looks lovely on your table! Enjoy!

A bit more on leaf and pumpkin Recycling and Thiefy. After a few years of collecting yard waste materials. I only advance into someones yard to collect their bags if I have had prior contact and know they are fine with me making off with the bags. And I leave a bag with once-used and folded bags to save them a buck or two. If I know or suspect that you don't want me to take your brown bags of leaves, leaf/grass mixes, I will not take them even if they are sitting on the curb. I will not argue with you, I consider it your property even if the stuff is sitting in the street and not on your property. There is plenty of other stuff available. Read three years ago that one relative shot and killed another over a roll of TP. There are three neighbors who save their stuff especially for me. They put it out early (normal is 12 hours before pickup start time of 6am). We know each other by name and they put it out by the garage so no unsavory characters will make off with it. If I have extra summer veggies such as tomatoes, they may get some.

Someone in my neighborhood has a very nice one growing under Oak trees that is in full bloom. I'm guessing it must do okay mostly shaded (since this one bloomed) and very robust even though it gets very little direct sun. I know you can hard prune poinsettias to keep them compact and bushy. I planted a couple of them myself this year in the ground hoping one day to have a tree-like plant or very bushy one like my neighbor's. You can probably dig it up and put it in a pot...depending on how large the roots are? There might be a chance it will be stressed for a while. I would put it in the shade for a few days and slowly acclimate it to full sun especially if its been growing in the shade for a while. Good luck! Alsosara, Thank you so much for your bringing this to my attention! The many that were stolen are history now, though with three very nice members of the County Sheriff's department having come to purchase their own plants, they are certainly aware of them having been stolen. Too, most that disappeared were of varieties that restaurants, growers, and the police can easily recognize since most were of the more rare varieties and colors including yellows, orange, purple, black, green and striped. That said, I have put this behind me, while considerably enhancing those factors in my own ad that make them unique. From the beginning, I went to great effort to identify those varieties that excel in flavor and, starting in January, just after my two stroke and the news of an incurable disease, used this project as a form of physical and even emotional therapy to keep me interested and moving. Mostly, I just wanted to grow the best plants and varieties possible for my own use in saving two of each plant, but that meant growing extras to provide me with a good selection of my own starters. These will provide me with plenty of seeds for othgers next year and has already provided others throughout the region with their first heirlooms. Too, it has, despite the major downer of the theft, been a means for me to stay active, meet others, and share my own knowledge with lots of people. Because these were my own "babies", I started them with the best possible seed starting mix that I then used espoma organic fertilizers and a blend of many micro-organisms. That has really proven itself. My own garden is thriving and despite the disease that is rapidly and painfully fusing my spine and hips, LIFE CAN BE VERY, VERY GOOD! In many ways, this is what I learned during my time as an E.R. chaplain and expressed in my four books....Happiness is a choice.

Hi Terri, I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm assuming its planted in the ground...I live in central FL and I personally have had better luck with mine planted in a container(this is the 3rd Christmas)I'm reblooming it. Having said that I have a neighbor that has one planted very close to the wall of his house and it re-blooms every year for the three years I've lived here. It gets bright indirect light and the wall protects it from the cold weather, although it was severely damaged this last freeze, but because he had it planted very close to the house and he covered it...its come back from the roots. I trim my potted one twice a year...once around Feb/Mar after its done reblooming and it starts to get scraggly. I trim it severely to keep it compact...I trim it so its only appx. 5-6" tall...after several weeks and I see new growth, I start fertilizing it with an all purpose fert. at half strenght once or twice a week, then around June, I prune it again...but not as severely basically just taking a couple of inches off just to keep it bushy. Then around Oct. 1, I start the darkening process. I've personally never rooted poinsettia cuttings, but I'm sure it can be done? Enjoy...LOL that is like me tonight...not having my saleslip on the skeet shooter...but I had a claim ticket...yes I just happen to know they had a skeet shooter with the same price set up in the warehouse part of Bass Pro...and why would I steal a skeet shooter????? LOL yes they are just doing their jobs...Stacy

Sorry to hear about your hassle, Anne.

Usually a 4 lb. box of clementines is $3. - 5.00 around here, but one grocery had them at $1.99 a couple of weeks ago ...

... and a number of boxes were partly opened, or opened, and a few had hardly any clementines left in them, after being raided!

Some peoples' kids!

I bought more than usual, sold some to neighbour, landlord, etc. ... at price I'd paid.

But was satisfied with the number of clementines that each of the boxes had contained in the first place.

If I was you, I'd visit your brother's store more often and pay at the same cashier every time!!!! LOL...

Well, there ARE people out there who get a thrill out of conning people and businesses. I think the checkers just wanted to make sure you weren't one of them...LOL!

There's a lot of thievery in stores. I bet the manager had a meeting and told ther staff to watch for shoplifters. That clerk was probably young and just trying to do her job. Sorry she gave you a hard time and embarassed you. Glad it turned out okay.
