I am looking at the 535 with a discount code for $212 thru HSN.

Will the Roomba keep the cat hair policed up?

Tell me what Roomba you have and what you like/dislike about it.

Dave, I have the Roomba Discovery and LOVE it! I looked at the specs for the one you're considering and it looks identical to mine except I have two virtual walls instead of one.

My Roomba picks up everything, including stuff along the baseboards. It is quite powerful considering it's small size. The only downside is that the receptical where all the dirt goes is pretty small so has to be cleaned after nearly every use.

I don't have a pet so I don't know personally how well it will do with pet hair but from what I've read, it does a good job, and entertains the pets as well. :-)

Jo, I use a drip irrigation system and put it away before freezing temperatures arrive. Parts of it...like the t-tape can be left outdoors but it drastically shortens its life. My garden slopes much more than yours, so I have my drip irrigation set up in zones with ball valves, so I can shut off some sections while irrigating others. Since water tends to flow downhill pretty well, even underground, my higher beds dry out faster than lower ones and need to be watered more often. Also, because they are on the higher south and west ends of the garden, they are more exposed to summer's south winds. Most of the time,, since water does flow underground from our neighbor's higher ground to our south, the lower beds at the north end of the garden have good deep moisture under them for a much longer period of time and often I don't have to irrigate those beds at all until mid-summer or later. To make drip irrigation work in our big,sloping garden, setting up zones has worked better than anything else I've tried. Our lowest temps at our house this winter have been 9, 10 and 11 degrees on several different nights, so I was glad we didn't have any drip lines out exposed to those temperatures. The people who leave their drip irrgation lines in the garden all winter often unhook the lines and situate them so any water left in them can run out. Then they use an air compressor to blow air through them to insure they are dry, and then hook them back together in place to they are ready for spring. I am not certain what they do with the rest of the system, but I imagine that even if they leave the lines themselves in the ground, they take the pressure regulator, filter and other parts and dry them out and store them indoors where they won't freeze and crack. Drip irrigation might not meet your needs if you don't want to put it up every winter, but it might work okay. You can learn more about drip irrigation at the website of Dripworks, which I'll link below. They even have designers who will help you design your drip system if you want them to, free of charge. If you go that route, be sure you tell them about the change in the grade in your garden so they can take that into account. Also, there is an irrigation forum here at GW and I bet the irrigation specialists there would be happy to answer your questions. There was a thread on this topic some months ago--see below. There are some good photos of niches. Our project is bogged down, but I have a few additional comments since I posted... Because we have to watch our pennies, I'm shopping in bargain places. One problem I have encountered is that oddball lots of tiles often don't include bullnose pieces as well as regular field tile sizes. The niche that we have roughed in will require some cute tricks to make ordinary tile edges seem attractive and classy; we don't want to just snip tiles and leave raw edges. DH, my sweaty equity, did not finish the niche smoothly when he created it in drywall because we knew we would cover it in tile. Now, we're thinking that we might not do the tiling right away and he'll have to pull out drywall tools and make a proper corner edging around the niche. This kind of "go back and do over" gig is getting very frustrating. [Meanwhile, I've found a smashingly exciting tile that of course only comes without trim pieces. It's sitting right next to me, thinking. Unfortunately it has a decidedly unfinished raw edge and will require tricky handling if we choose to use it. I just covered it over so I can't see it tempting me there on the table. Have to be more practical. ] Tile shops do carry a metal edging that can be used to finish off edges when no bullnose is available, but I haven't seen examples of it in actual use on a range niche. Would love to see a sample photo to reassure me. Also, remember that if you choose to work with a thick tile or a remnant of some kind of rock from countertop on the back of the niche, that will cut down the depth of the niche shelf. If you want the area above range/cooktop to be an artistic focal point, I humbly suggest that you either make a niche OR some kind of tile design but not both. If you choose too fancy a niche back, the items standing within the niche will compete with the tile design for viewer's attention. Mine will be a working kitchen, so we're planning to put oil bottles, vinegar bottles, salt shaker, etc. there and they are supposed to get top billing. Here you go, the uppers have the calander hanging on one side and emergency numbers on right door and all the office things live here. There is an outlet for charging cameras and "my" stuff. On the counter is an outlet for the land line. Antique tray is our magnet board. Top drawer has a powerstrip attached to the back for DH's electronics this is "his" drawer for keys and anything else. Bottom drawer is the coupons, and "junk" drawer as I have found it is inevitable! Basket is home for shoes. There is now a cushion on the dog kennel. Once Buddy is no longer we can pop an end panel on kennel and the lid under cushion lifts for more storage. Hope this helps! From Kitchen before and after From Kitchen before and after

I have model 530 and I also love it. We have a mini doxie and it does a great job with her hair. We are actually looking to upgrade to a programmable model. We have friends who have 4 in their house!! One for each level and one for the garage and workshop.

I got the 535 for Christmas but I've only used it once. Sure is a cute little thing, but mine's a bit klutzy (like it's mama). It keeps running into furniture. No pets here either, but many people here who do sure seem to like it.

I forgot--it does have a setting on it called "Spot". If you press that it will only clean a 3 sq.ft. area. So I'll do that when I only need the traffic area cleaned.

I have a Roomba Discovery and four shedding cats. I LOVE my Roomba!!! It picks up cat hair with no problem whatsoever - even under couches and beds. I empty it and clean the brushes after each use. Buy it!! You will not regret it.

I love my roomba - it cleans when I'm outside the house, working in my studio.

Patty43 - did you expect it to *not* bump into furniture? It's just a robot, not a magic robot. It doesn't have eyes. Mine bumps into furniture all the time. That's part of the way it works. It bumps, gently, then cleans around the legs, and underneath if it can get there. That's the point. NO damage to the furniture at all over several years.

I LOVE my Roomba (and my Scooba, too); only drawback is they are a bit noisy.

maryc--sure I knew it'd bump the furniture, but mine seems to go straight to a table or chair even if it's in the middle of the room when it starts out.

What is really cool about them is that you can let it go to work when you leave for the day or when you go to bed and when it runs low on battery power, it heads back to its docking station to recharge.

One night I let it loose to clean the living room before heading to bed. I got into bed and then felt guilty that it was out in the living room working in the dark. I got up to check on it. Got all the way out to the living room when I realized I was worried about a gosh darn machine ... albiet, one I named Scooter. :-)

Enjoy your little guy Dave, you won't regret the purchase.

I used my mom's Roomba for a few months. No pet here but yes, it does work for dust, grass, etc. What I didn't like is that it isn't "fringe friendly" so having fringe on your rugs may be a problem. I also didn't like having to pick up or "hide" my cords...seemed like it wasn't too "cord friendly" either. Minor annoyances, though. :-)
