Old works documents opening in word pad HELP

Can someone help me get my old recipes that were saved in Microsoft Works, and want to open in word pad, to open in microsoft word?

Tami, what is the file extension? Is it rtf or doc? Are you able to save save as xxxxxx.doc?

Lynn, how do I figure that out? I have no clue. Some of them I will be ok on, as I also have them hand written, but the ones I have copied and pasted from the net will be useless if I can't change them. I already had to re-type all my addresses for my family cards because of it, and some I didn't have written, only on the laptop.

That is interesting that MS has now started giving away Word and Excel, so far I have heard no complaints over the advertising that is supposed to be there either. I might suggest that those with Office 2010 starter go to Microsoft and download the free Powerpoint Viewer so they can enjoy some excellent Powerpoint shows that pass around in emails.

I must take issue with snidely's item #2 re automatic Windows updates. A few years back there was a real problem with some HP computers that had AMD processors. This may have been the update for SP3, but my memory can't say for sure. The machines went into an endless reboot loop. My desktop was one of the affected ones, as was my friend's. There was finally a "fix" issued by HP which we were able to employ. My HP laptop, also with an AMD processor, although a different one, was not affected at all. I have also had minor problems with some of the .Net updates, so I always install those separately from other updates. Just my experiences, so one does learn from those not to just blithely set automatic updates. Obviously snidely is not a mother, or he would know that 13 year olds can be very sensitive and sometimes overly dramatic. This has nothing to do with good parenting, so he would best keep remarks about such to himself. I am a great grandmother as well as a former school teacher (12, 13, 14 year olds), so I have seen it all.

I'm using Open Office (3.2) on a Mac and have noticed the same minor annoyances. Sometimes (not all the time) when I save a document as a Word (.doc) file and then re-open it, the bullets change character. If I open the same document in Word, the bullets are fine. Maybe that's what "free" gets you?

This is the extra coding that wordpad has added so that the page comes out like you have made it. Is this file saved as a "doc" file? If so then that is the reason for all the extra coding. It is better to learn html coding with notepad since it will not add any coding on its own. If it was notepad that you used in making the webpage perhaps you tried opening the page in wordpad to see it. this lets wordpad add its own coding so that it can read the page. When you saved the file did you save it as a txt file and added the .htm or .html after the file name? you must do this in order for IE to show the file as a html webpage. I learned html using notepad before there were editors to do html coding. I have tried many editors and i still think Microsoft Front Page is the best for people who just want to have their own webpage. You can find FP on ebay for around $50 for FP2000. I would choose this since it makes it easy to make webpages and you can concentrate on the graphics and content of your pages rather than the html coding. While it is still good to know html coding, it is not necessary to understand it all. JamesS

Would it maybe be a .wps file? I right clicked on the recipe file in the list and it says file type .wps.

that is why they are opening in word pad, Tami, they are saved as wps. Here is a conversion process, I have not used it but just did a search for "convert wps to doc"

Thanks, I'll give it a try. Probably tomorrow. I don't do well at figuring out computer problems at night when I'm tired! DH is snoring in his chair now!

We finished our shopping today, and got the tree decorated. Guess we did good, but it doesn't seem we got much accomplished!

Of course the recipes I want are for my Christmas baking!

Thanks again, Lynn. I may still be begging for help, but at least I know there are possibilites.

If you can open and read them no matter what type cant you copy and paste into a blank Word Doc and then save that new file?? I do it
I copy then go to EDIT at the top of the word screen and hit Paste Special then hit unformatted and ok then it will drop into the blank word all formatted like my other word docs. hope this helps

I haven't tried Lynn's fix yet, but my problem is, I can't read them at all! It's just a jumble of charecthers.
