My parents are the bride and groom(on the right, wearing pearls). The maid of honor was her best friend since her first day of school, until she died. The best man was a friend of my father's, they served in the same unit in the Marines.

This is indeed a rare, wall-hung dental cuspidor. They were first popular in the late 1919s when it was considered unsanitary to brush one's teeth where one washed the hands. They were first added by the wealthy. They gained popularity in the next twenty years and then as quickly were gone. Here are pics of two such dental cuspidors from a Victorian mansion that my sister is considering rehabbing. Simply gorgeous. These were not originally intended to hold water and most did not have facets, but rather spouts, and most did not have stoppers to allow water to be held.

Well I don't want to discourage people from trying :) Try and decide which pieces look related, then try and decide which one of those came first. Some are related, some aren't. Also look at construction. Do any of the pieces look like the idea preceded the ability to make it work well? For example, this is the Salvador Dali "Mae West" sofa (1937)--a surrealist piece that looks like lips from the front: It seems pretty successful, in a deco way, until you see the Salvador Dali-inspired Bocca or Marilyn Monroe Sofa (1971) which also looks sofa like from the side, lip-like from the front. The technology (fiberglass, foam, etc.) had changed enough to make a lighter, more (sur)realistic version of the lips sofa. (I sorta prefer the Mae West simply because it also looks like a conventional deco sofa.)

Kitchen designs changed in the 40's and fifties to the walls of cabinets with built-in appliances we still use today. Metal cabinets started being used in the 30's - almost 10 years earlier than you have been told. A lot of hand carpentry was still being done, but the rapid delivery of metal cabinets was very attractive, they contained "labor saving features" and were sold as being everlasting. That didn't turn out to be quite true and fashion moved on and almost all cabinets today are wood products. The house may have been built with only the hutch thing and the cabinets might be a later renovation. Or the hutch thing was built by a carpenter and the rest of the cabinets were bought pre-made. It sounds like something seen in a magazine and duplicated, doesn't it? The telephone niche might be exactly that, but is more likely an ironing board cabinet - similar to what ironaway still makes today. I'd love to see a picture. Your counter is possibly original laminate counters - they started to be produced in the mid 30's and became popular by the start of WWII and exploded in the 50's with the intoduction of vibrant colors. If its soft, your counter is linoleum. Cherries have been wallpaper forever, maybe put up a picture of that too - I'll bet someone here could tell you when its made.

What kind of flooring goes with 1940s ‘skinny’ planks?

We have 1940 wood floors throughout most of our 1st floor, but in the entry we used 12"x12" gray/green slate, laying it in a diamond pattern so that the grout lines are not parallel to the run of the wood floor planks. It works well as a more durable floor in the entry, and the transition to stained wood is visually very smooth.

Great photo! Your parents are both very good looking.

I just love your mother's wedding dress. But the bridesmaid's dress is so elaborate and she's wearing a veil, too, so I thought it was a double wedding!

Formal weddings in Philadelphia were very elaborate back then. I have my grandparent's portrait also, from 1921, and the gowns are just as elaborate.

What a treasure! I thought like so many others it must have been a double wedding....beautiful gowns!
I have one of my parents wedding pictures too. Its just them alone but the only one I have!!

What a beautiful photo ! My husband's parents and his aunt (on his mother's side) got married in a double wedding just before WW2, November 1941. They did it because they felt war was inevitable. They had a double wedding to save money on the reception. My own parents got married just after WW2, on June 30 1946.

Here's my parent's "official" wedding portrait. They were both enlisted in the RCAF and were stationed away from home, out in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada.

They were married February 2, 1944.

My father was on active duty, assigned to the Marine Quartermaster in Philadelphia. He and my mother met at a USO dance...she was a local, and going to Temple U.

I knew my maternal grandparents very well. My grandmother's family were pre-revolutionary war in Phila. She was a history buff, and loved Philadelphia. I have so many of her antiques and family pictures.
