We have them around my area. I have the sheriff's dispatch on my pc and see it.

I can't believe they have pump THEN pay stations!!!

I haven't seen a pump then pay station in forever. They may want to consider changing that.

I think that ours are mostly pump then pay as well, unless you pay by credit card. I hope the station has a camera system, creeps.

Yup, it's a Murphy's gas station, which is Walmart.

Most of our pumps in Calgary are pump then pay. There are those where you pay first, but I prefer the full serve gas station. They fill, then I go inside to pay.

Most gas stations have enough security camera's that when people fill and dash, the camera picks up the plate number and they're caught by the police later. The people are not allowed to run after a car over a few dollars of gas. It's not worth getting run over for.

These gas stations usually have cameras on the cars at the pump at least they do here. I'm surprised though that they still have these. I would think that if you don't pay inside before pumping, that at least you would have to use a credit card or card of some type to be able to pump. But we don't have that around here and do have lots of drive offs. Most of the time though they get caught. I would think that at the least it would let the police do their jobs in other way and not have to waste their time with something so easily fixed by having this type of pumps.

That wouldn't happen here - one either has to swipe a credit or debit card to activate the pump, or one has to go to the cashier and pay to get the pump turned on.

In Iowa you pump and then pay. Of course, some people drive off without paying. In CA you pay first.

The areas with high incidence of driveoffs will likely have prepay. Stores that don't want to spend money on new pumps will stay with postpay as long as they can. Stores also like to avoid prepay as long as they can since prepay costs inside sales. I've always been alert and a couple times I've jotted down license plate numbers when I wasn't sure the person paid for it and asked the cashier. Often the cashiers are responsible for driveoffs.

I'm a firm believer in people getting involved in crime prevention. Little things can mean a lot. The cashier and other customers will wind up paying for the losses. And when you think about the impact it makes me want to help the stores out. Consider this:
⢠A stolen cup of coffee is negligible in impact. The cost easily recovered in the next sale of most anything.
⢠A stolen candy bar probably takes the sale of 1-2 candy bars to offset the loss.
⢠A stolen pack of brand-named cigarettes takes the sale of probably about 60-70 packs of cigarettes to offset the loss.
⢠A $20 gas driveoff would take the sale of probably about 300 gallons of gas to offset the loss (with no profit on the 300 gallons). Do the math for a $40-$60 theft.

And believe it or not, the "big oil companies" do NOT eat these losses!

Some places have good cam systems but a surprising number of places have terrible stuff. Just tonight on the news they showed a robbery and the quality of the picture was terrible. That's inexcusable. Good quality modern cameras and recording systems are not expensive relatively speaking and can pay for themselves many times over.

Well around here (or at least a few yrs ago) the sheriff quit going after the drive offs because the store wouldn't prosecute the theft!

Doesn't happen much around here--as by law, all our gas stations have attendants. We aren't allowed to pump our own gas. So it's not as inviting for someone to get a tank and drive off, when there's someone standing right there. NJ gets a bad rap for a lot of things--but when it comes to gas stations, most of us really appreciate the state--no self-serve and our gas is always some of the cheapest in the country (due to lower gasoline taxes)

Ours are all pump then pay. I don't know how it works for those who pay with plastic.
I miss the only gas station in the town we used to live in. A guy came out and pumped the gas, asked if I wanted the oil checked and he washed the front window. This was 6 yrs ago since we moved away, but its probably still like that.
AND NO......IT WASN'T MAYBERRY! LOL

I was so amazed by that when we were last in NJ, Azzalea! And what a treat!!

My last boss also owns a Convenience store with gas pumps. He's had a few drive-offs. Also several times the person forgot to put the nozzle back up. When they drove off it pulled the nozzle off the hose.

We are not permitted by law to pump gas. I'm a Jersey girl; never pumped gas...just pay the attendant to do it!

All of our pumps in Newfoundland are pump then pay. I never hear of gas and go (not paying). It's very rare that it happens.

I was really annoyed with the pay then pump stations (every station I went to) in California and Nevada this September & November. I couldn't use my credit card because it asks for a US zip code. So I would always have to go in, figure out how much I wanted to put in (I never knew because it was a rental) and then go pump. You guys must have a lot of criminals down there for every station to be pay then pump, LOL.

Last time I went to NJ, the kid forgot to put my gas cap back on, and I drove away, so his service cost me at the dealership!!!!

I live in SD, and almost all of ours are pump then pay. Where I fill the owner fills the gas and cleans the windshield in the warmer months. He also tells me if my tires look low and other things he notices. I work in a restaurant right beside there and one day a lady came in and told us she just had to call her friend because she couldnt believe it that someone had actually filled her gas and she had never seen it before.
