....don't forget to make sure that your furnace exhaust vent is clear of snow. It's been so windy and we've gotten so much snow since last night that I just checked and the furnace exhaust pipe and it looks like it's buried. Have to go out and clear it out now! I've been trying to feed the birds all day but the minute I get more bird seed out, the snow and wind covers it up.

We might have less than a foot here just north of Concord NH. It's still snowing but hard to tell since it's just getting light out. I can see the plastic high tunnel (with peaked roof) is still standing (love being able to pick spinach and beet greens this time of year). Still need to order fertilizers and seed potatoes but garden seeds are ordered and will be here soon. It's cozy at our house since we heat with wood and the power is still on. Yesterday afternoon when we were glued to the computer monitor to watch live feed from an off-road race in CA, a small flock of turkeys flew past with about 3 veering off to roost in the tall pine behind the house. Another flock was still in the field waiting to take turns flying up into the pines along the west side of the field. We don't usually see the flock flying together like that.

Great photographer! I "liked" him, so I can see his new pics. I'm also going to have DD check him out. She is also a photographer. She will enjoy it. Oh, and stay inside, warm and safe! As the DD of a snow plow driver, please keep off the roads. You will be safer, and the less people on the roads in the way of the plows, the better, faster job they can do! Tami

Hey Amberley, Scrappy, & Bmorepanic (& anyone else in this MD/VA/DC)...we have around 30" here in Western Howard County. Drifts are quite a bit higher...the one we measured was 36" high! My DH just started slowly snow blowing our driveway. We have a fairly long drive, so it's going to take awhile...he figures it will take him at least 2 days to do it all! Our dogs refuse to budge from the porch...we have to push them off to "do their duty" on the snow rather than the porch! My DD tried throwing Ruby (the female) into one of the drifts...but she stayed on top and daintily walked down & off the drift! Heavy snow! But, we have a fire going and I just made hot chocolate for the kids (they just came in from playing out there-13 & 15 years old and still playing in the snow, I love it!), so we're doing great! I also made a big pot of chili for tomorrow and now I'm making pineapple casserole (me) + Roman Holiday (DH & kids) for tonight's dinner! Amberley, it sounds like you're making good progress b/w the demoing and the snow shoveling!

Reporting on dinner. It was okay. I thought it was a little sweet. Also the sauce didn't thicken so at the last minute I had to separate the liquid from the rest of it and put it in a pan and add more cornstarch to thicken it. It was a PITA! Probably won't be making it again any time soon. (Of course, Harry liked it--but then--well, you know.) Georgysmom, I think that's what we'll have for dinner tomorrow. We just got some fresh cod and it's so good baked. Shirley, pancakes are always a favorite around here. I use Krusteaz mix--just add water. First time I used the mix Harry said they were the best pancakes he ever ate. No my feelings weren't hurt--too much, sniff! Hey, they're easy anyway. Wozzer, Hounds! That was quite a luncheon. Now if you aren't going to eat that mousse, would you mind passing it over my way? Yum! Jasdip, how is your weather? Are you getting any of the effects of the big blizzard that's supposed to hit our east coast? Your dinner sounds delicious and I bet the plates were pretty, too. Schoolhouse, oh yum! Your description had me drooling. That sherbet sure sounds good. I've never seen it but I bet it's refreshing. Sue, a good dinner for a cold winter's night. Best part is it only gets better with age. (Sort of like us, huh?) Sue VA, you're so lucky to have a GD so talented. Those are just beautiful and I would've devoured both of them before I even thought about eating dinner :-)

I was thinking about this the other night when I heard something about it on the news. I wondered where my furnace exhaust was then after a few minutes realized it must vent out my chimney.

thanks be we have a steep roof on that side of the house!

we're not going to get nearly the snow you guys have (metro detroit area) but we did all our shopping yesterday, and know couple of my kids did church last night...

Thanks for the reminder. Since DH is not home and I'm in charge of getting everything cleared, I'll have to check it. It was a lot of snow and it could easily be covered.

I saw a spot on maybe the weather channel that if you are caught outside in a
blizzard where the snow is actually covering you (or something like that)
to keep your gloved hands in front of your mouth and nose to gie you breathing
room in other words you make kind of a cave around them so that you have room to
breathe just a good hint I think let's hope we never have to use it

Thanks for your post! I sent it to my sister in Mpls. Coincidentally, before she read my email, she noticed her furnace wasn't coming on and it was 61 in her house; so she shlepped out to the back of the house in waist-deep snow (!) and sure enuf, the vent was totally blocked. After she cleared it off, the furnace came back on immediately! Somehow I think this could have been dangerous.....

momrox - it is very dangerous if the vent is blocked. I've been told this can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. I think your sister's furnace has a shut off that if the vent gets block it automatically turns off. I'm not sure that mine has this since as far as I know it has never been blocked. Don't think I want to try it. I'm just glad I saw this thread.
