Anyone have Cuisinart Coffee on Demand 12 Cup Coffee Maker?

I saw it advertised on HSN and wonder if it is a good idea. It has an inside removable 12 cup reservoir so no carafe to break. And it "is double-walled, so your coffee stays hot and ready to sip for hours", if you can believe the speel. You press a button and get one cup at a time. You can also program it ahead of time. And has a gold tone filter so no more paper filters to buy.

We have had one for almost two years. It is OK, but the tradeoff for a glass carafe is a bulky square of plastic. It takes up a lot of room in the dishwasher.

My husband insists on using the gold tone filter, which just means another thing to clean - I prefer the ease of throwing out a paper filter.

We have noticed that the coffee is drinkable right as you pour a cup. That seems like a good thing, but it means that the holding temp is kind of low. Hence this Christmas present to the husband:

No way would I drink a cup of coffee that had been kept hot for over an hour, much less 12 hours. As coffee sits, it builds up acid and gets stronger, no matter if it's kept in a sealed chamber or a carafe.
I do have a Cuisinart programmable grind and brew, which I love.

I use 12 level tbsps of coffee plus about 1 1/2 more for our ten-cup Braun. I always offer guests added hot water if it's too strong, but no one has ever complained. We buy Don Francisco online or from the catalog; it's DH's favorite. Don't care for Starbucks; it tastes very harsh to me. We have a variety of D.F. flavors that we like. When they have a sale we occasionally spring for Kona. There is now a discussion about coffee brewed in French press coffee makers being bad for one's cholesterol. A Dutch study comparing filtered to unfiltered coffee indicated that this was the case. There's a fair amount online about this question. I just googled 'french press coffee cholesterol'. Very interesting information.

An interesting article. A couple of points: I wonder how a darker roast, would fair under the same conditions. I'm not a chemist, but when the oils are on the surface of the bean, can their structure be damaged in some way by the freezing and thawing? What about the residue moisture within the bean? This can vary by the roast. Can the freezing and thawing have any effect? IMHO, to be a fair test, one would have to try it with different beans, different roast profiles, and different brewing methods. The other issue is the "exchange" of flavors that often takes place. We've all experienced that refrigerator taste when something has been kept to long in the freezer in spite of it being in a so called "air tight" container. Me, I just like good coffee and its no biggy to purchase it fresh roasted and use it up quickly. We order a pound every other week. Our problem is with espresso. We don't use up the beans as quickly. Most espresso is a blend. There are only a few single orgin beans that make a good cup and a good shot. When I can get them in the roast profile I like, we use them up fast enough so the storage question is mute. Any tasting is, by its nature, a subjective thing. If you enjoy it, that's all that matters. But I do warn you, if you start drinking coffee made from quality beans, freshly roasted and ground, and properly brewed, you have a good chance you'll never be able to stomach Maxwell House again; and Starbucks will merely become an emergency fix only to be used when your supplier is unavailable. It can become an addiction for which there is no known 12 step program!

I was curious about your statement since Technivorm is supposed to be be one the of the few that brew at the correct temperature so I went to see what they say at sweetmarias and found the following statement. They do measure it in the cup and find it at 156 but they feel that's plenty hot for drinking as do I. I'm not sure how you'd prevent temperature drop off in a drip maker unless you only brew a single cup like the Keurig. I suppose you could reheat in a microwave right after brewing?!? "We have had some feedback from folks who find the coffee brewed not hot enough in the Technivorms. There is a steep drop off once the water hits the grounds and then drops to the pot - that is to be expected. Testing the machines at our warehouse in Oakland (elev. 8 feet) - I get the following temperatures: 195 to 205 degrees F at the brewhead; in the grounds, 160 degrees F; and 156 degrees F in the pot. I find 156 degrees too hot to actually taste anything - so I let it cool a bit. Some folks find this too cool - they are used to the coffee being heated on a hot plate above brewing temperature but I can't taste anything in a liquid that hot - so reheating the coffee does not make much sense for me. I know that some folks are used to coffee that hot though - that is what they are accustomed to. -Tom"

"shermstead....what is a knock box?" The spent espresso grinds from the portafilter of an espresso machine is called a 'puck' and a knock box enables you to knock the portafilter against it and release the puck. You can see the stainless steel canister, that is the knock box, on the top left corner of the island. "I love your granite and the large edge cut. What is the style of the edge cut? " It's an eased edge of 2cm granite built up to 2 1/4 inches. We love the look of granite and, thus, the thicker edge. We were originally going to just do the island with the thicker edge, but changed our mind and went with 2 1/4" edge on all counters. When all the little details are finished (hopefully next week) I'll post more photo's.

Thanks everyone for getting back to me. It sounded interesting because sometimes DH gets up an hour before me and makes the coffee so that when I get up it is cold. And I have broken my share of carafes. Plus just today DH didn't have the coffee pot put together right and coffee went everywhere! Thought it might be time for a change.

We have one, and to me the coffee stays hot until the time goes off.

I deliberately bought it for 2 reasons, just like you DH gets up earler than I do. We make coffee with the auto timer so it is ready 15 minutes before he gets up.

The second was I got so tired of the mess of a carafe. they always seemed to drip on the counter.

We just use regular filters, the gold one came with it but I like to just toss the filter. Kathy
