You can use the card in a different camera, as long as it is the same type of card.

Yup, just needs to be the same type. Also, in my experience, it's better to connect the camera to the computer than to remove the card. Removing the card over and over can cause issues with it.

Be sure to format the card in the new camera. After that, it should work beautifully.

"...it's better to connect the camera to the computer than to remove the card. Removing the card over and over can cause issues with it."

I disagree. Removing/replacing the card won't cause any issues at all, provided you do it correctly. Before removing the card from the camera, make sure that it is not still in the process of saving a photo to the card. Turn the camera off. Then remove the card.

Put the card into the computer's card reader. It will most likely appear as a removable drive. When you are done moving/copying the pictures from the card to the computer, be sure you follow the proper procedure to disconnect the removable drive. Generally speaking, you should have an icon in the system tray (the lower right-hand corner of your screen) and it will have a green arrow. Right click on the icon and then click on "Safely remove hardware." You should get another window that will list removable drives. Click on the appropriate drive letter to select it, then click on the "close" or "disconnect" button. After a second or two you will get a popup that says it is safe to remove the hardware. Then, and only then, should you remove the card and reinsert it into the camera.

Another factor -- when you keep the card in the camera, and use the connector cables to attach the camera to the computer to offload the images, you are using the camera's battery power, which will deplete it much more quickly than necessary. When the card is in a card reader attached to or integrated within the computer, it uses the computer's power, saving the camera's battery.

You didn't say what the issues were with your camera but it may just be your card and it is now after use become defective, or batteries that are not holding their charge to the max. Before a major purchase I would have someone check the card. (if the reason you are buying a new camera that would be compatible with the one you are using now.) Cards have come down in price so much in the past year or so, that you can probably get a card with more gigs than the one you have now for under $20.

I always upload my pics with usb cable to the computer. Never take the card out. My kodaks have their own battery charger, and the battery lasts a long time on one charge.

I always leave the card in my camera too when I upload my pictures to my computer. If you use rechargeable batteries, draining batteries isn't a huge issue.
The card you have can only be used in certain camera's. My SLR and one of my point and shoots will use the big Compact Flash card. But my other point and shoot uses a smaller card. There are two cards even smaller than my small card but neither will work in any of my cameras. But that's not what you meant, right? hehehee I can use the compact flash (cf card) in two cameras. I don't recall ever formatting the card before switching camera's. But I rarely do that because I usually keep the 4gig card in my big camera. So now I have to think....... or just try and switch cards around and see what happens. LOL

The problem I am having with the camera is
1)it keeps whizzing through the pictures.
If you want to delete one for example, it lets you
go thru 3 of the four clicks, then does something else.
2) I can't get it to allow me to use
the screen on back as viewfinder, I have to look through
camera.
3)The lense doesn't want to retract everytime you want it to.
Maybe I'll go buy a new card and see if that helps with any issues. It is 6 years old. Was only used heavily when Grandson was born . Thats when we bought this one, for her shower.

When it works, it takes wonderful pictures, and it's not complicated to use.

Then I don't think your problem has anything to do with the card. It's the camera.

I know when I had an Olympus, only the Olympus card would work in it. I then got a Canon, bought one big card for it and that's all I've had to use. I take the card out and stick it in the computer all the time and I've never had any issues with it. They've gotten so reasonable in price now that if it ever fails, I'll just buy a new one, but it's been a year now and I use the camera a lot, no problems.

Have fun picking out a new camera, you're going to be amazed at how much better, nicer, faster they are! The Olympus we had is like a dinosaur compared to this little Canon!
