It is possible that your camera will not read an 8gig card. How old is your camera? Some older cameras will not recgnize the larger cards.

But I would try to format it. You might be able to do this in your camera's menu, but if it continues to flash error and will not let you access the menu then you've got a problem.

I have 3 cameras, and none of them will read an 8 GB card. I think that is your problem. With my oldest camera, I had a 4 GB card and it wouldn't accept it, because the max for it was 2 GB. My newer cameras can use the 4 GB, but not more than that. Check your manual to see if it gives information on the card size.

As was mentioned above, your camera may not support an 8gb card.

Check the size of the card that you have in the camera now. You know that one works.

All cards need to be formatted before they will work. Check your users manual under how to insert the card and it should explain the format procedure for you camera. Generally under the "Setup Menu" you will find a "Format tab".

YOu could try formatting that 8gb card and it may work but that card may be larger than what your camera supports. In the mean time, if you have already downloaded all the photos on the existing card to your computer you could "Format" the existing card and that will erase all the files on the card. Once the files are erased the existing card will function just as it did when it was new.

Thanks very much. I have NO idea how to format this card. NONE. I guess I could lay the card on top of my keyboard (near the letter "G" for gig) and just leave it there overnight?

When y'all talk about reformatting this memory card, I really do not know where to begin. I have a wire that connects the camera to the laptop and when hook up that wire, the pics start to flow.

It is an old camera, purchased June 2006.

I had to take a bunch of photos today and I went ahead and erased the existing photos on the old card and just re-used it.

Rose, it's likely that since it is an old camera it will not read the 8GB card like we said.

But if you want to format it and try, go into the menu on your camera (should be a menu button somewhere on it) and scroll through the options until you see format, then click it.

rosemaryt.....I have a Canon Powershot. I'm using a 1gb card. I've never tried anything larger.

I googled your question and the card size becomes a problem when using a point & shoot.

As for the old card you have that works, why are you deleting photos from it rather than just copying them over to your computer and clearing up space that way? The whole point of a card is that it is temporary storage until you transfer or delete photos from it to continually clear up space. If you transfer them to your computer, then you don't need to be making choices about what to delete to free up room.

And if you don;t know how to get them off the card and onto the computer, just ask here.

I have a PowerShort 120 - the camera manual tells the max size card it uses -which is an 8gb. If you don't have a manual you should be able to go to the Canon site and find one. You definitely need to format the card for your camera (although as others have said it may not support that big a card) It's a very simple process for mine and I presume for yours - the manual will walk you through it.

Are you sure about that model number? I tried looking for a manual assuming you don't have it but it doesn't list a 360.

If you have the manual, it'll tell you what you can use for cards. Sounds to me like it won't handle that size. With my one camera I had to buy 2 - 4 gb cards rather than an 8 gb. The clerk kept trying to push an 8 and it was hard to get through to her that it won't work.

I also have a cannon about that age and it clearly states it will not take anything over a 2 GB SD card.

That would definitely be my guess as to why you get that error.

I agree the point of the memory card is to use it to temporarily store the pictures on the camera till you can off load them to your pc and burn them to cd or whatever medium you choose, take the card in and have them printed out or what ever. Once you do that you have all the space on the card available again.
I never use the cable to transfer pictures and never use any software from the camera it is just not needed when you can so easily use the memory card in a memory card reader.

Unless you have a fairly new computer it probably can't read the 8g card either... I got a great deal on a package that had 2 4g cards at Walmart yesterday, 16.00 for both cards.

If your card reader does not read the new HC cards all you need is a usb plug in card reader pick them up at walmart or any place that carries accessories, the new ones will read the bigger cards that are HC rated. Many of the older card readers will not read the cards that are the HC ones. I picked one up at walmart a couple weeks ago for under $10.

Many of the older cameras also will not use any that are HC marked they just use the plain ones that are just SD not SDHC
