Lets write our own Christmas story. Just add lines, that make sense to you. ;)

Here, I'll start it:

It got cold out, and December came around. Christmas music plays in the stores.

On a sunny weekend in early December the neighbourhood is bustling with people putting up lights and hanging wreaths. All are awaiting the first snow!

Our kids usually go with their biological dad to their grandmother's on Christmas Day. One year my wife and I, left with the decision about whether or not to fuss with a large Christmas dinner, decided to make the drive north to some acreage I have on Lake Huron that we use for hunting & recreation, some 70 miles away. We decided it would be fun to spend a few hours feeding the dozens of birds I'd tamed to the hand there, and then enjoy a nice Christmas dinner on the way home at one of our favorite restaurants on the shore of Lake Huron. Well, on the return trip we discovered that not only was the restaurant not open, but that neither were there any other eating establishments of any stripe open - not even a Subway; and The Lord knows we passed enough of those in our little jaunt. We ended up returning home & thawing a quart of frozen (but at least homemade) spaghetti sauce from the freezer and dining on that. Two good things came of that day, aside from the joy of feeding the birds. We ended up with a good story to tell that always offers a laugh, and it raised awareness of our situation to the level that we ALWAYS get invited to Christmas dinner at one of my sibling's homes. ;-) My teacup (sugar maple) tree, located on the property and another interesting (green ash) tree with a burl Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all. I have one that is more strange than funny, but appropriate for a decorating forum. Many years ago, just before Christmas, my BIL and his wife remodeled their kitchen, using apples as a theme--dark red and forest green colors. My MIL called and told me that for Christmas she and FIL were buying BIL/SIL new dishes, to match their new kitchen. She described the dishes as having apples painted on them, with a dark green edge band. Then she said, "And we'd like to get you new dishes, too." I was thrilled, because I'd been thinking of buying a new set of dishes to replace our old odds-and-ends, but hadn't wanted to spend the money. I told my MIL this, and thanked her, and mentioned that either a cream color, or a light sage green would look good in my kitchen. MIL: "No, we're getting you the same dishes, with apples on them, because that's what FIL likes." Me: "But, we don't have anything with apples on it in our kitchen, and really, nothing red or forest green." (The kitchen had no theme--it was neutral with cream and tan, and some light blue-green vintage pottery.) MIL: "Well, that's what we're getting you, and I'm sure they'll be just fine." Me: "Um, OK, thank you. That's really nice of you." On Christmas I opened the package, thanked the in-laws again, then used the hated apple dishes for about a year and a half. One day when the in-laws showed up for family dinner, I put out my brand new cream and sage dishes, that I'd finally bought for myself, without saying a word. Neither of them ever mentioned my new dishes. I love my FIL and my late MIL, and that was so out of character for them, it still puzzles me. BTW, I packed away the apple dishes, until just recently, when my DD needed dishes for her new place. She was happy to see the familiar pattern, especially since the dishes came from her grandparents. :)

Yeow-w-c-c-h!! There is water on the surface of the tongue, and the ice on the pole, if there is some, or the pole, itself, lacking ice, are several degrees below freezing - enougfh so that when the liquid on the tongue touches the ice or the pole, it freezes. And if you've tried to pull up a piece of cloth that's frozen to the driveway, you'll know the tongue's reluctance to move away. Pulling the tongue free immediately, before the liquid on its surface can melt again, will almost certainly pull at least part of the skin on the surface of the tongue where it's touching the pole away with the ice on its surface, leading to a painful surface until that area of skin can be replaced. If the ice on the pole, or the pole itself, is rather thin, leaving the tongue there will soon melt the liquid on its surface, allowing it to be withdrawn without difficulty ... which will take longer, if there's a fairly thick layer of ice on the pole, or the metal of the pole is thicker, especially if the temperature is quite a few degrees below freezing. If one can pour water that's just hot enough not to cause discomfort to the tongue down the pole past the tongue, it warms the pole, with the warmth moving to the part of the pole that's freezing the water on the surface of the tongue, to the point where the ice on the surface of the tongue thaws. The deeper the cold, or the thicker the metal of the pole, the more residual discomfort that the tongue will suffer, even though the owner of the tongue did not pull it free before the ice on its surface melted, for the exposure to the cold pole will cause some freezing damage to the cells just under the skin of the tongue. ole joyful

Sure Kristi, but I haven't been too consistent with fertilization. For about the first year I used MiracleGro All Purpose Plant Food at 50% strength about once a week. Then I switched to using fertilizer that uses nitrate instead of ammonium as a source of N. This was nearly impossible to find, so I began using the formula recommended by Sahuc, N.J. (1998) Herbertia 53:72-80 (see below). But I mixed my own micronutrient solution following the recipe for Hoagland's solution (the details for that are easy to find on the web). After sinking the pot in the ground outdoors last spring, I fertilized a few times with MiracleGro, but I mostly neglected them. Their roots were able to explore the soil of the planting bed, which I had prepared with plenty of organic matter and granular 10-10-10 fertilizer. And throughout the whole time occasionally mixed smoke water with the fertilizer mix. I've mentioned this before in this forum. I remain a little skeptical about whether this has made a difference, but there is information in the scientific literature that shows it improves growth of some species at least. Bill

He heard the strangest noise....banging and clanging on the roof.
Thank goodness the roofers got there before he put the lights up. He'd hate to take them down and put them up again.
That would really irk the wife, and we all know what she was like when he...............
