Clare, a really good tip for opening jars easily is to take a teaspoon, bowl up, and pop the seal on the jar by putting it under the edge of the top and pressing down on it. I have problems opening jars too, and this has almost always opened. If that doesn't work, I have one of those hand (manual) can openers with the bottle top popper on the end, and that works.

Once the seal is broken, the top just screws right of easily.

Bottle tops are another story altogether. I use a nutcracker to open coke and pepsi bottles. Why they are so difficult, I'll never know, but those 2 liter bottles are almost impossible for me to open.

junkyardgirl - Thanks for the tip. I will try it. My hands have arthritis and also have carpal tunnel, so I just don't have the strength to grab and twist any more.

My mom had one of these can openers. One thing the ads don't say is that the edge of the can is very sharp. They go on about how the lid isn't sharp...but watch out for the can edge!

I saw them advertised not long ago. It may have been Walgreen's or maybe Target. If you have them nearby, give them a call.

I Googled and the reviews on the One Touch Jar Opener are mixed. Pretty negative actually. It will only open certain types of jars and the batteries go quickly.

I like the jar poppers that look like a plastic bottle opener to break the seal and those rubber rounds they give away at trade shows to twist and grip jars with. The waffle weave ones don't work as well.

BB&B and places like Home Store carry the jar poppers.

DH bought me the B&D jar opener a couple of years ago. Its fabulous and doesn't require any twisting effort at all; just put the jar on the base and release the top down to the jar top and it self-adjusts and opens the jar!!

Clare got my One-Touch jar opener from Carol Wright.
Works great it is a little slow ajusting to the jar
but is great not to have to fight to get a jar open.

Like Wantoretire we have the Black and Decker electric and it does great. We bought it for MIL a few years before she died and she used it heavily. Now with my RA I use it almost daily.

I wouldn't want a battery operated one but the black and decker sounds good to me...
Since I popped my bicep I don't have the strength to open jars anymore.

I thought I saw this product at Bed Bath and Beyond, but it may have been the one touch can opener....not jar. Worth a look though!

I don't know why anyone would want another kitchen gadget. My Mother has a gadget under the counter shaped like a piece of pie with "jags". It fits anysized jar lid 6"-1" and it isn't visible under the cabinet and always handy.

I tried to take a picture, but I was practically standing on my head and it didn't turn out.

Clare--I saw them today at Wal-Mart for $18.??. They were hanging on hooks at the end of the canned goods aisle. They sure look handy!

Gayle, I really hope that you never have reason to understand. I have one of the jar openers that you describe, I cannot use it.
