I love that thing. I have included it in swap packages,showers and gave my DS one when he moved out.

My other favorite must have from Bed Bath and Beyond is the Zyliss Ice Cream Scoop. Nobody makes a better one.

I have one too but it looks a little different, it works great.

Cool jar opener thingy. I just have the rubber gripper thing and sometimes even that won't get those stubborn jars open.

My tip for the day...and this is something that maybe everyone except my DH knows....is to clean the lint screen over the open washer. Then that film of lint dust doesn't get all over the top of the dryer.

Guess you lucky front loader people can disregard this hint! lol

I have one too, I got it at a garage sale for a quarter. I have since found out that a table knife slid under the edge and lifted gently does the same thing. Still like the jar pop, just sometimes it is faster to do the knife. Kathy

I have an under the counter jar opener and it has worked so well for many years, however I bought it from a man at a flea market who makes them. I haven't been able to find any other that work as well and have wanted to get one for my mother and a couple of friends. I have to go to Memphis today and will stop by BB&B to pick up a few. Jen ~ That's one of those suggestions that you just have to slap yourself on the forehead and wonder why you didn't think of it. Thanks. I hate all that dust on my dryer.

My tip for the day is when cracking eggs, while cracking them on the side of a bowl or a skillet looks more professional, there will be far less chance of pieces of eggshell getting in it if you crack them on the counter top or other flat surface.

My folks use a Gilhoolie to open jars (link below). Gee, I think they've had it for at least 20 years now. :-)

I, on the other hand, use one of two methods. One is to hold the jar upside down and whack it down on the counter. That usually loosens it enough to open. If that fails, I holler at DH. LOL!

I have the under the counter homemade opener also. It was a gift to my Mom from a friend.

We should get together and "Patent" them. I want one for my Motor Home too.

I have to have a jar-popper. Even DH has a hard time sometimes. I love gadgets.

Another hint for cleaning the dryer vent--if you use fabric softener sheets, use the old one you just took out of the dryer and run it over the filter. The sheet seems to get the lint out easier. My washer/dryer are in the garage so I just hold my filter over the trash can when I clean it.

Another neat thing at BB&B are picture hangers called "Gorilla Hooks". You just poke one in the wall (not on a stud), twist it in and in about a minute you're ready to hang a picture. When you take it out it leaves just a teeny little hole. Hold a lot of weight, too.

Mscsippy, Lee Valley is an excellent company to deal with, I have bought many things from them.

We have an opener similar to the Gilhoolie- there were two but I gave one of mine to my DIL's mother who has arthritis in her hands. I've been afraid of losing mine so I'm glad to see one similar is available. I'll put it on my 'to buy' list But I wonder if she would be able to use the other kind of jar pops better. Next we are at Linens and Things I'll pick up a couple. I guess they will have them- they are closer to us than Bed, Bath and Beyond.

Gmom the jar pop breaks the vacuum. The Gilhoolie looks like it would give the leverage necessary for the twisting part of opening a jar. If your mom has arthritis she needs the leverage. My DMIL had arthritis so bad she could even close a jar properly.

Camping world used to have a great one, and may still have it. Tried to find it on line but could not. It is an bar with holes in the handle and the bottom is adjustable with a catch that fits into the holes. Anyone near Camping World--let me know.

Even cheaper than any gadget for opening jars is a square of the lacy Rubbermaid shelf lining.
It's also good as a bathmat....non-skid, does no harm to the porcelin finish, dries quickly, lightweight, and folds up neatly in a drawer.

Wild child- it is my DIL's mom who needs something to open jars with. So would she use the Jar Pop to break the vacuum and then the Gilhoolie to unscrew it? Another thing that is useful is to run hot water over the jar top to cause it to expand , then unscrew it. Learned that in science.

Gmom. I don't know for certain because I don't have a Gilhoolie. It says it can pry tops open so I assume that function would work as a popper to break the vacuum.

I use a paint can opener to pop the seal on a jar.

My tip is for the pop top cans, if you have long nails or acrylic nails it's hard to pop the top, get yourself one of those cheap box cutters the ones that use a single blade razor take the razor part out and use the outer part as a tab lifter. I open all my soda pop with it and it works great.

My suggestion--black heel marks on the kitchen floor come off with a swipe of a paper towel dampened with a squirt of lighter fluid or mineral spirits.

Hi flam..I love my 'Jar pop'. It works on most of the lids I need to open except for some lids that have deeper sides like the Prego pasta sauce jars or some type of large pasta sauce jars. For those, I use the Rubbermaid shelf liner, or the like. I also like the fact that they are so big and RED! Easy to find.

Jars are becomming an issue for me. Arthritis is starting to affect my ability to grip.

I had forgotten all about the knife under the lid trick. I know you must be careful so you do not crack the glass. I'll try to remember that for the next time I'm stuck.

patti ~ I love those gorilla hooks. I have used so many of them. I even hung some things on the wall in the garage yesterday using them. I have the 35 pound and some either 50 or 55 pound; can't remember which. It sure is a lot simpler than having to fool with the hammer and possibly a drill.

Thanks for the tip Flamey! After I saw your link, I went straight to Amazon.com and ordered me one in my favorite color, RED, they are $3.49 at Amazon. I have so much trouble opening jar lids as I get older.

Oh, gosh! I thought I was copping out today with this tip because it's more of a nifty gadget tip than one that I came up or stole from a friend, I'm so glad that so many of you will find it useful. They come in different colors, I have a red one and a navy one and I reach for the red one every time.

The beauty of this opener is that once you've released the pressure/popped the seal, the top unscrews with ZERO effort, no straining, no gripping, just give a gently twist and it'll come undone instantly, just as easy as putting a lid back on.

Casey, I like the look of yours, too. I like how it does the deeper sizes, I'll be on the lookout for one of those, too. And the knife tip is great, in case I can't find one like Casey's!

I can see where the Gilhoolie would come in handy, too. Nothing like some good lever action to help open a jar. Some jars are just too big for my hand to fit around, this would help enormously.
