Well, grrr, I don't like Southwest, boo!

Seems as I cannot do early checkin online, as I haven't flown Southwest previously and have to PROVE I am a senior by showing my age documents at checkin tomorrow.

Said I am also handicapped, but don't need a wheelchair. Asked if I needed to bring my handicap parking sign.

Told her I have lower back problems and going to PT.

Said they will determine that when I checkin.

So so sum it up, I haven't flown their airline previously I have to PROVE I am an OLD as I am.

Oh well, at least, I won't miss the ship this time!

I'm not sure what not having flown SW before has to do with early checkin. All you need is your six digit confirmation number and name.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Since you will be able to prove your age with your photo ID, so you've got your documentation in place.

I like them because they're the cheapest way for me to fly back home. Hope you don't run into more problems.

Everyone seems to look at the above picture and admire the thriving plants, but seem not to see that most of the area is bare soil. Will it remain that way or what additional planting will be required to finish this off and stabilize the site? I'm not familiar with that area of the country, but it seems that stabilizing the surface is really not a big deal due to lack of erosive forces and growth rate of invasive weeds. It would be very impractical to use a lawn there. It is an alien to that environment. In much of the country, grass is a normal naturally occuring part of the ecosystem - not monoculture turfs, but grassy fields. I think it is possible that people from arid regions may not appreciate what happens when soil is left exposed to the elements in the not so arid regions. Stabilizing soil is a high priority for the protection of the environment. It needs to be covered to keep it from eroding. In these regions you need pretty close to complete coverage or you will have erosion. That means having small patches of groundcover or spotty shrub plantings is not going to get the job done. You could have large areas of mulch, but this is subject to erosion and weed growth. The weed growth reintroduces "high maintenance" and the possibility of pesticide use. You have to plant the whole thing or mother nature will be working on that for you as she also tries to erode it away. Lawnless in non-arid areas has to overcome erosion by having some kind of surface that resists it. That can be trees, shrubs, herbacious plants, groundcover, pavement, or mulch (mulch will have the least resistance to erosion). It has to succumb to or overcome mother natures desire to reclaim it with a succession of weeds and grasses to thicket and eventually a forest. Going lawnless is fine, but you have to know that in most of the country it is not a matter of removing grass and planting a few drought tolerant plants. Most of the attempts that I see are done by well meaning people who do not complete the job in stabilizing the soil - I'm not even going to go into aesthetics. The result is usually spotty plantings and wood chips everywhere (the well meaning folks who tend to go lawnless tend to like to recycle wood chips as well). If you are going to do it, think it through and make a commitment to an end result. Don't remove the grass and then try to figure it out later. There is a sizable investment of time and money to do this up here in the northeast. I suppose wood chips might make some feel that they have recycled and removed lawn at the same time and they can sleep better at night. Again, is matching what you value to the conditions of the site. Don't under estimate Mother Nature. She won't treat you any differently just because you have her best interests in mind.

In general, I don't like condiments that are sweet, and that includes ketchup, although I use it on a rare occasion. I especially dislike sweet mustards (although I love all other mustards) and I also dislike sweet pickles and sweet BBQ sauce. Don't like Miracle Whip either. What I do like: tangy mustards, Thai curry paste, wasabi, horseradish, chili sauce (without tomato), Mexican salsas (red and green), and most complex spice mixes that are not sweet. I generally omit cinnamon and nutmeg in spice mixes, or else greatly reduce the amount of those spices, which is one reason I make my own Thai curry paste - and omit the cinnamon altogether. I like all vinegars, even the sweet Balsamic ones, and so there is a bit of a contradiction there. Sweet is okay if it is balanced with sour, but I tend to prefer tart, bitter, and spicy. It takes me over a year to go through a 5 pound bag of sugar, and I tend to use that up mostly at Christmas time. I like fruits for desserts, and I use preserves on occasion, but not on a regular basis. I do make my own fig preserves and give most of it away. The only chocolate I eat is bittersweet, but then I can't eat milk chocolate anyway. Lars

We have a painting that hung in the family farmhouse for years that is really ugly to me. The frame is bad, the picture itself is not in good shape and so many times I have wanted to chuck it out the door. But it was given to my DH by his Uncle who never married and divided the household goods among the nephews and nieces. The artist name is Ernst. There is actually a well known painter by this name but we don't know if its the same one or not. Just recently learned of him. Anyway, the painting is large and sits behind the bookcases in my DHs office. Even if its by the well known Ernst, I don't like the painting and would never hang it. Its a landscape.

After doing more reading it SAYS: Though you must be age verified to check in for your Senior Fare reservations online, you do not have to be age verified to purchase Senior Fares online.

So I have to show proof tomorrow.

Live and learn!

I could though purchase priority seating for ONE way only for $81. Not!

Glenda, when my leg was broken and I HAD to fly to get home, not only did I have a wheelchair;but they provided a assistant. Sounds good right? Except they were so crowded they put me in the "bulkhead" and had 2 people in the jumpseats facing me and someone next to me too. ( and me with pins and a frame sticking out of my leg!

They were pretty nasty as they were pre-boarding, they were actually booting people out of the line so many were trying to preboard. Guess that's why they have gotten so rigid about it.. Having said that, I am sooo done with Southwest, but for a far worse reason.. Kathy

I've never flown SW. I usually fly Jetblue. They let people board early by a self-select honor suystem. MY DH is 62, has very gray hair and a came, so no one challenges him. Me-I'm his young chick-trophy wife companion. Glenda, I feel sorry for you. You must be cursed-the cancelled cruise, the fall at WalMart, now this. You need some good luck for a change. Well, enjoy the cruise this time! .

it is pretty standard procedure when giving discounts to certains groups. if you are a floridian the cruise lines offer very good discounts and you get your discount online but when you check in if your license is not a FL one they will charge the difference to your credit card at the full price fare. same w/ tickets for the theme parks we get awesome discounts but only w/ drivers license proof for each ticket and they most certainly check that.

i always fly SW they have never ever once had a late flight w/ me or lost luggage and i've flown them since the mid 80's several times each yr. i'd rather fly them 4 times a yr to chicago then only affording once a yr on united. hope all your plans for this cruise go well! our first cruise was fabulous, just got back at 1pm today, i'll post pics this weekend, ship was all decked for christmas too! your weather should be very nice, orlando is low 80's most of the next week and miami will be warmer :-) good luck! wish i was going again lol ~ liz

You probably would have had the same issues with other airlines. Sadly, everyone must supply a vaild photo ID to fly these days, and your age must be recorded on that document. It's 'tough bananas' for those who do not have a driver's license with photo, or a passport. In some states, you can get a non-driver photo ID at the dept. of motor vehicle licenses.

Beware that you if you leave the boundaries of the United States, you will need a passport to get back in. There was some relaxed rules about driving into Canada and back, but I not sure what those were, and I have heard these exceptions are going away, and that a passport will be required also. Check on this before you travel outside the US. Allow enough time to process a passport if one is needed. The delay for issuing a passport has gotten quite lengthy.

.......Okay, Widbeykathy, are you going to tell us about your frightening experience? I'm a fear-of-flyer, and I like to hear all, though I know that doesn't make much sense. I have really enjoyed flying Southwest, mostly because their people are more relaxed and nicer than most.

I have all my documents, traveled enough to know, but Southwest makes me grrr.

It will be ok, when I travel with my mom on SW, we have to show her proof of age ID, then we get to board first(well with the families with children and people who need assistance,because she does need assistance, that is what you should tell them, you need assistance, you will get to board with the first group. Have a great trip...
