Canadian Geese held me up, AGAIN, today!

At least twice or more a week I get held up by them taking their time crossing the road. Today was one of those days.

They are sooooo not afraid of people, cars, honking horns, yelling SKOOT, get out of here!

Have an over abundance of them in my area, as there office building with sidewalks for walking around manmade ponds.

Of course the geese love it here.

And they fill up on one side of the road and cross over the busy road, just take them time. As if WE CAR PEOPLE weren't in a hurry to get somewhere.

They are absolutely beautiful and enjoy seeing them in flight.

But oh so messy that walkers have to sidestep their poop, and walk around them cause they don't have a care in the world.

Our town is like that, too, Glenda...way too many geese around here...they stay here all year around.

My neighbor just acquired a flock, while they were molting, to put by the lake on his farm in GA. Said that way, they should migrate back to his farm, yearly.

Wish he had taken some of ours.

Beth, you and your geese are very welcome... It was just a blind guess about the snapper, but for once I was right on the money. Now it looks as though Coldiron has a similar problem. If you want to train your geese to go to the barn, I suggest you start soon. Make them work a little for the treats. Reward them for walking with you. Pick a cheery little song and make it their travelling music. My geese walk with me to a version of "Three little ducks that I once knew" expcept it's "Nine little geese" and I improvise the lyrics. Thank goodness the neighbours are not too close and are a whole lot weirder than I am! When I put them in for the night, I march them to "Row, row, row your boat" and it really does help get them into their house. For your geese, I suggest one song for everything. Sing it when they are coming to you for treats, when they follow your for more treats and work a little closer to the barn once they get the idea. If you feed them grain or pellets at night, work the dish closer and closer to the barn too. By the time winter comes, they will trust you enough (I hope) for you to be able to sing them right into the barn for the cold nights. Geese are also fairly easy to herd. Don't rush them or they will scatter in a panic, but keep a slow, even pressure on them. A long stick in either hand (I use my cane) will make your left/right signals clearer to them. If you want them to go to the left, raise your right arm. If you wan tthem to go right, raise your left. Both arms extended equally and they will go more or less straight forward. It takes a little practice, but it is comforting to know that you can move them away from danger if necessary... or even make them go into the barn in really bad weather. Sheila, I'm glad you would like some Pilgrim eggs. We must do this. It would be lovely to think that some of "my" geese were in your keeping. Also, from a conservationist point of view, it would please me very much to get those genes in as many places as possible. Pilgrims are such super geese but they will be in a bad way unless their gene pool can be maximized. My Willow is of Californian stock, a bit short in the legs but a lovely little goose even so. Ben and Elsie are breeder/show quality from Holderread's via my local hatchery. With all the travel expenses, the pair cost me CDN $75. (They went by air from Oregon to Buffalo and then travelled by car from Buffalo to Prince Edward County. They were only 24 hours in transit and were not stressed when they arrived.) Worth every cent...They look really good and should produce good goslings.

dees, that was very interesting info. The best part of your advice to me is to make sure the shipper puts instructions on it. This is great advice when I am the shipper. My company did tell them to call up at the front door when they sent said package. They didn't call as usual. I believe FedEx employees get paid much better to go the extra mile and the company makes more money as they are diversified in several areas I am told. They sure are the happiest young men and when I have told them how greatful I am, one of the two said to not worry we make very good money.They are well trained to speak with customers in a professional manner. My troubles are about to be over since my ex-husband made a good phone call today using his contacts to them and my company told UPS what they have witnessed through me and leveraged a deal for me when I receive any UPS packages or else they threatened to change contracts. It was eye opening to the president I work directly for because his company is known for customer service. There are books written on how they do it. They give UPS a lot of money nationwide. So, I will not be a priviledged customer I will just get what you all get for service. However, when I travel my company sends my luggage ahead to my hotel via USPS. dedtired, did you name this the FedEx Toss? Oh great now the carriers can have bragging rights for who tossed the most expensive piece. What a nut job this jerk is. I love it.You can post that every month and I will look at it. If you find out what happened to the guy (I want the smallest details like when FedEx was told what he did, what did they do - then let me know.) Kathi,I think there will be a lot of hustling in the next days. The weather is good around me anyway and this is their season to shine or lose a lot of future business. Why can't temp employees try to get noticed for doing a great job and perhaps get hired that way. I guess they are not trained well for the short time they work and get put in difficult positions. Susan- my revolver is a 357 magnum and you're correct about the noise protection. We always wear both eye goggles and hearing protection when we shoot. As for hunting- I don't. It just doesn't interest me but I do enjoy target shooting with my husband. We do regular targets and sporting clay. I do allow my brother and one other friend to hunt deer on my property. Both men have permits for 2 doe a year and they do eat all the meat or donate it to the local group who distributes it to the needy. I personally couldn't shoot a deer but I don't have a problem with my brother hunting for deer or turkey. We have 135 acres in the PA mountains and my forest has been decimated by the overbrowsing of deer. The only way to restore our woods is to drastically reduce the number of deer. It's not unusual to look out the window and see 10 to 15 deer browsing. The only oak trees we have left are the mature ones, there are no young oaks growing because the deer eat all the acorns and the young trees. We are enrolled in the PA Forest Stewardship Program and the goal is to protect and enhance our property for the betterment of all species of flora and fauna. Here's the recommendation from the 2 foresters and 1 naturalist from the Yale School of Forestry: ......"The recommended deer density to allow for adequate tree regeneration is 20 deer per forested square mile (one deer per 32 acres). However, to perpetuate a healthy native forest with a diversity of native shrubs and wildflowers, the recommended deer density is 10 deer per forested square mile (one deer per 64 acres). The habitat value of forests is greatest where there is an extensive unbroken canopy of mature trees with a diversity of native understory species that includes shrubs and herbaceous plants. Given that there are about 138 acres of forest on the property, the recommended number of deer that should be using this property to sustain a healthy forest is two."........ It's a serious problem. It sounds as if you are sold on the more inexpensive chairs. If so, please read this seller's ratings before you purchase, and try to find the chairs at another retailer. We rarely see them here, occasionally flying. Once when it was raining they were standing on the lawn. I love to see them. I'm sure it gets annoying having too many. I'd like to box up a few dozen crows and parrots and send them to you for a trade!!

There is a large lake not too far from me. Lake Purdy

In the evening you can hear and see them flying toward the lake, and in the morning flying towards the office buildings to backup traffic. Gotta get their joys!

are you sure your not from Pierre SD. that is the way it is there. There is an open warm lake right beside the capitol building in Pierre which is right on the Missouri River so they are there all year long. A mess on the sidewalks and on peoples lawns and they also tear tufts of grass out of peoples lawns. They go wherever they please and as slow as they please.

We have the Canada Geese here, too. I often hear and see them flying directly over my house. I try to go out to watch them; sometimes there are too many to count. They winter over a few miles from me. They also fly into town and hang out at the river.

Years ago we had a lot of ducks in town who created a path from a wooded area, right across a busy intersection, to the river. There were so many and they are also slow movers. Finally the City put up a sign where they crossed. It was a real traffic sign, yellow with black letters that said "DUCK CROSSING" and a drawing of a duck.

We don't have as many ducks now as then. Guess the Geese won the game. Remember Duck, Duck, Goose? But the Duck sign is still there.

We have many here also. With 3 ponds, they are no bother to us. I love them! but of course I don't have to walk in their poop! LOL

We have the occasional Canada Geese pair hanging around our lake but the really odd pair are Egyptian Geese. They hang out at the school yard at the end of our street. Just them, in a big field with kids running to class right by them.

The other morning, about a month ago, they decided to hang out in the middle of our low traffic residential street. I approached them in my car on my way to work. Instead of moving or flying out of the way, the male spread his wings wide and charged my car and that of another coming the other way. I am shocked they haven't been hit yet. I keep forgetting to put my camera on the front seat so I can take a picture of them. This is probably the third year they have been at the school ground.

My only vent is I would really, really hate to see them hit by a car or chased down by some kid, though I'm certain the male would hold his ground to a kid. That's probably why the students give them a wide berth when they run by them. :-)

I live in a subdivision with lots of lakes. We get geese every year in the lake behind our house. I enjoy watching them and seeing the young ones. They do eat grass in our back yard, but they don't bother me in the least.

Now if they were pooping in my front yard, I might not like them so much. lol

Hi all,

Any kid who messes with a Canada Goose is going to wish that he hadn't - unless he has a long stick and arms powerful enough to damage the goose's neck rather heavily ... and that early in the game.

Any but possibly one of the larger dogs which has had dealings with a Canada Geese has learned enough to leave them alone, and even large dogs have learned to respect them: they are tough customers.

One thing about it - Canada Geese leave abundant evidence that they are not ... "full of it"!

They claim that flying in a "V" formation makes flying easier for all but the one at the apex of the "V" ... and they take turns in that position.

As for a comparison with a duck ... a "duck" is a four-letter-word ...

... and a goose is bigger!

Both are famous for taking their own sweet time when going on a prmenade!

They are a huge nuisance, much like rodents IMO...many golf course owners are outraged over the damage they cause to their property, their hands are tied when it comes to solving the problem of how to rid the courses of these pests. There should be a hunting season for Canada geese, thin out the numbers...
