This is the second year I have asked, and think I'll get one this time.

A new toilet seat!

DS didn't really believe my request last year, but the other day he said "do you really want a toilet seat?"

LOL, Glenda!!! Hope you get it!!

Lazypup...hope you don't!!!!

My boss sent me an extremely generous Christmas gift so I decided to get my iPad. Went and got it yesterday, WiFi and Verizon 3G. So I'm now learning what to do with it. So far I love it.

I'm not sure why a local cabinet shop couldn't make what you want if you get the specs and do scaled drawings to review with them and refine the construction aspects. There's some similar things in the link here, but I didn't check into sizing. I'm not sure why the "concept" would be different for a cabinet maker. It looks like frameless construction, which I'm sure all shops are doing now. The only confusing thing for me is the toilet cabinet. Maybe it's designed to fit over the tank. Dunno. Congrats on the 46 pounds. I agree with you about the fact that we overweight types need to watch and count what we are eating, and that's a permanent thing. I just ran across the Hacker's diet, by John Walker. Not much really new in that book, but being an engineer, I could relate to his way of explaining it. Anyway, what he says is that we lack the feedback mechanism that some have to naturally control their weight. It's like being nearsighted. If you are nearsighted, you have to wear glasses. If we quit wearing glasses, we won't be able to see, and if we quit watching our weight, we will get fat again. So you accept that you will have to do things differently, make that adjustment, and move on. Here is a link that might be useful: Hacker's diet

I can't thank you enough for the comments and attemepts at solving my problem. I admit, there have been laughs and a few tears. The frustration level with this project has become high, mostly because we can't get started. I chuckled when it was mentioned that we entertain a lot, therefore keeping dishes close to the dining room is a good idea. Yes, we do entertain a lot however no one who comes here ever wants to be in the dining room! The kitchen and family room windows extend nearly to the floor, looking out on woodlands and a large koi pond and waterfall. So here it's casual, mostly moving between indoors and out. The "formal" dining room has more than 12 linear feet of cabinetry, with all manner of china and serving regalia that is never used. Company has been successfully herded there for meals 2 or 3 times in 20 years. It would better serve as my new sewing room! It seems what has most people here bothered is the doorway to the mud room. Some seem to have the notion that the "rest of the house" is through that doorway. Actually the only thing in the mud room is the door to the garage, and a small powder room that hubby uses when he's working in the yard. I guess we could build a pantry cabinet in the mud room, but that's about it. The rest of the house is actually on the other side family and dining rooms. There are 2 other powder/rest rooms for guests over there. The opening to the mud room is not exactly a runway but it needs to stay. The comment about the dishwasher was an excellent catch, and the refrigerator, the one thing not yet purchased, could easily narrow to 36" wide and no more than counter depth. It could then move down to open directly facing into the aisleway and full height cabinets could be placed on both sides. That makes the sinful barrier more of an L shape. What I called a "prep" sink is probably is more aptly called an entertainment sink. Making lattes, teas and such at that counter. The main sink can and will serve many purposes, including prep work, actually both sinks will multitask. The design generously created by bmorepanic, which so many of you favor, has it's own challenges. We have looked it over, and plotted it into the program to look at it in 3D. We also pushed the wall into the living room back a little further. Even with the pantry being a smaller version, it feels like the main sink is in a hallway and it is so far from everything. I'm not convinced that the12-inch available space behind the sink turns into cabinetry large enough to house dishes or flatware. The big thing for me though; have you noticed how few cabinets remain? The refrigerator drawers aren't placed and still have to go in, leaving only one useable base cabinet in the prep wall and two in the island that face the work area, one small one facing the family room. Buehl, I've seen your awesome cabinet layout with base cabinets numbering into the teens, so could you honestly organize yourself into: ...

Old World vs. Classic Kitchen--trying to figure out what I want

I used to get the magazine "Cottage Living" and loved to see what people did with smaller spaces. I loved the look of the charming and carefully done houses. Our house is not small as in cottage-like, but it is also not a mansion. I think seeing what can be done in a smaller space helps when designing for not so small. Your house is not small, but the look is more of a charming one that an exotic style. If you embrace how nice it is and what it can be, you will have a lovely place to live. When I was younger, I always wanted to be glamorous, but could never pull it off. I looked like the girl next door and wished I could be more grown up looking. Now, many enough years later, I am grateful that I look young(-ish) for my age and had never been at a loss for suitors before getting married, so I wish I could tell the young version of me to be grateful because if one is wishing for something else, they miss what they do have. I still can't wear red lipstick, but am ok with that now that I am wiser, lol. I subscribed to Cottage Living for the decor and appreciated the smaller scale once I started to read it. I also love the aesthetic of what were mostly charming homes and the variety of what could be done while also keeping their appeal. The nicer ones were not mini versions of big houses, but were their own proud more modest size. It was my one foray into house porn, so I can't recommend many others, lol. It is out of print now, but you may be able to see back issues at the library or if someone is getting rid of them such as on freecycle or CL. I finally parted with mine last year or I'd send them along happily. I tried their old website that was up past the magazine going under, but it directed me to another site, which looked cute too. Apartment Therapy may give you some ideas. You will have a larger amount of space to work with, but the feel may not be far off from what would work for you. My kitchen is fairly large now and yet it was done in a modest way for the decor. Its look fits with the overall scale of the house. If we had done fancy, there would have been a disconnect with the rest of the house no matter how much we updated it all. If you have seen a woman who is wafer thin where all the bones in her neck and ribs are protruding, and she is sporting double Es or more, you know what I mean. More is not always better.

Glenda, great idea. Think I'll ask Santa for that, too. I also would like a good pedometer.

Lazy, I'm a naughty old lady AND I live in warm, sunny Florida - come on down, lay on the beach and swim in the beautiful ocean while I beat you about the head and neck with my garden shovel - how does that sound?

Glenda, I've been asking my landlord for a new toilet seat for months - they cost about $40 around here - I'm still asking!

Glenda,,don't let them lie to you,,you can get a descent toilet seat for half that price..

But while we are discussing toilets..let me share a story..

There was an old couple that lived out in the country and they had an outhouse. One day at breakfast the wife says to hubby,,if you get nothing else done today..fix that damn outhouse.

He went out and looked it over and found a door hinge loose, so he tightened it up, then he found a loosing siding board and nailed that tight.

The next morning she is on him again,,"I told you to fix that damn outhouse!!!"

He went back and looked again. Found one roofing shingle loose so he nailed that tight, then he looked all over but could find no more problems...

The next morning the wife is livid,,,she says,"If you don't fix that outhouse today, I am out of here!!!"

He says. "Wait a minute, I have looked at it three times and I fixed everything I could find that might be a problem, if you can show me the problem, I'll be glad to fix it."

So off to the outhouse they went and she said its inside, so he went in and looked around, but found no problems,,,she says, "Look down there real close at the seat."

He bent down and was looking at the seat, but still could not see any problem, but as he started to raise up his beard cought on a splinter and it yanked his hair,,he hollers "OOOOOOOOUCH"

She says,,,"Hurts don't it,,,now fix that damn thing!!"

Really having a hard time getting into the spirit of Christmas this year. My parents are suffering from alot of serious health issues. Not all of the boys and their families are going to be here for Christmas.... Not sure what's going on. I just know that I'm not "feeling" it this year.

I'm not either, Grannie - I'm not even putting up a tree or wrapping any gifts. If they don't want the present in a bag, I'll just keep it - I only bought 4 actual gifts - one for the neighbor lady and 3 for my Grand Daughter.
