A Surprise on Christmas Eve (pic)

My son just came over to give me this stained glass fireplace screen, my Christmas gift from him and his fiancee. Isn't it beautiful? I'm totally surprised!

I'm going to put a lower wattage bulb behind it. It lights up the whole room the way it is right now.

Thanks Ethan. The bent stem on the rootstock mango was not an accident. I will usually do this to stimulate the pushing of the buds on the scion once it has been at least 1 month and it is still green....especially if the buds have not pushed themselves. In this case, the scion actually had some portion of it that wanted to die. Luckily two of the buds at end of the scion remained viable with one pushing out nicely (as you can see) and the other getting ready to push now. Of course you don't see the other 8 attempts I had at the same time that didn't take.....I didn't think anyone would be interested in my failures :-) Keep trying those grafts.....practice makes.....well, not perfect, but at least occassionally successful. My husband's parents used to celebrate the English way, or what they thought was English (they're from Hong Kong). A full dinner at 6p on Christmas Eve, putting up the tree, opening presents at midnight, and then eating a full meal AGAIN at 2am in the morning Christmas Day! This really wasn't very enjoyable for me, and since my MIL worked it was pretty stressful for her, too, doing all that stuff! They would make roast leg of lamb (Chinese will eat meat in huge quantities if they can afford it!), shepherd's pie, several Macanese (Portugese recipes adapted from Macau cuisine) dishes, and one little lonely package of Green Giant creamed spinach for 8 people. Eventually over the years, they stopped doing these parties, due to ill health and just getting tired of all the work involved. I was secretly relieved, although my husband STILL misses opening presents on Xmas Eve, LOL! My family of third-generation Asian Americans, celebrates Christmas Day. We never have a set menu, as all of us, including my now-grown-up nephew and niece, are dynamite cooks and love to experiment. Although we do a mostly traditional Thanksgiving, Christmas is always different. Sometimes we do "theme" ethnic cooking; sometimes we do more traditional stuff. This year it's slow-roasted salmon and prime rib, because my nephew is anxious to try cooking his first Big Piece of Red Meat :)) I make a smoked salmon sushi appetizer that the family really likes, so I offered to do the hors d'oeuvres this time. My BIL is vegetarian so he'll do a Greek salad and we'll have a couple of desserts -- probably a tiramisu and a fresh strawberry tart with lemon curd filling. My sister is in charge of the starch this year, could be pretty wild as she approaches cooking as a science experiment! New Year's we celebrate individually. My sister and her family do a buffet drop-in. My husband and I usually make ourselves a nice festive brunch -- blueberry French Toast or Chocolate Pancakes, and then maybe rack of lamb or filet mignon for dinner.

Yes DeeMarie Jen Donna Tikanas (it usually does not take that long Besh!) Patti Marci - it came today! Besh (it didn't take that long Tikanas!) Raeanne - it came today! No NH Suzanne I can't imagine that Maddie would forget, as she is the top chief/liaison/organizer/coordinator/get-it-together and fly girl. Dee - I am sure you could tell Rich a few things, so my lips are sealed. Besh - enjoy your well deserved time off. Tikanis - I agree with not working out while sick. I missed working out so much that I think I rushed it. NH Suzanne - I loved the photos, thanks. Marci - enjoy your time off. Sounds like you might have your hands full this year. Jen - I received the package today. Now I can't wait to open it LOL. I will wait to see if we hear from Suzanne or Maddie about opening up, but now that MY package has arrived I'm not making any promises LOL.

Yes, Sue, there have been a few times when this little story about the blocks would come up in conversation. Usually at a time when DD was feeling deprived or having a pity party, and I would ask her if it was because she never got the blocks. lol. It was kind of a joke between us. I didn't take the picture. My DGD's DH is the camera guy and I asked him to get a good shot as she opened the package. It is great, isn't it? About next year? Geezz, give me a break!! I'm glad you all enjoyed this little story, and it just goes to prove that it doesn't take much to make someone happy. AND, if she had gotten the blocks, there wouldn't have been a story to remember. It's beautiful...I don't think I'd ever put a fire behind it...I'd be afraid it would crack the glass.

What a wonderful gift from your son. I know you haven't burned wood in your fireplace for a while but now you can still enjoy the 'glow'. That was a really thoughtful gift. And from the photo it looks like it fits the opening quite nicely.
