Why we eat hopping john, collards, pork for NY's Day

Always have, and everything is ready for tomorrow.

Doing a search, and here tis in writing:

"Tradition holds that when eaten on New Year's Day, Hoppin' John brings good luck. The rice signifies abundance for the coming year, while peas-specifically black-eyed peas-are thought to bring wealth in the form of coins. (Collard greens, a classic Hoppin' John partner, represent dollar bills.) Pork also plays an important role in the dish, and it's for more than just flavor. Hogs can't look back, so pork represents the future."

We've never had Hoppin' Jack..but do eat the peas,collards and pork (for us the pork is fried hog jowl).

What's your recipe for Hoppin' Jack?

Can't remember ever NOT having pork & sauer kraut, with some kinda potatoes, on New Years Day. Sister has long been transplanted from the SE PA area to the DC area, so she also has black-eyed peas. Ive never had them... no particular reason, just haven't. Decided to cook/eat my way outta 2013 and into 2014. Thought I had a decent sized hunka pork in freezer, but NO? Did find a half rack of baby backs... cooked them yesterday and have been picking at them since last night. Since hunka pork I had was small (about half of a single pork tenderloin) went out this morning for something more substantial... left-overs only seem to get better IMO... lunch for tomorrow when back to school after a LONG break. Have some frozen periogies getting ready to be boiled up and added to porl/kraut. I like to cook pork a LONG time... till falling apart.

Segrass, congratulations on making it through everything physical and emotional that goes with aggressive treatment for breast cancer. It is worth it. My mother discovered breast cancer when I was 16 (1970) and she lived 12 years with lots of treatment. Treatment is much better now. Celebrate tonight with joy. I am shampooing carpets, cleaning like mad and cooking. Tomorrow I am having the first dinner party in the new kitchen. Actually, I have never given or attended a dinner party. We had Christmas dinner with Jimmy and Maartje, and so I have energy for New Year's Day. We went shopping at Ralphs today and found fresh okra, and so I decided to make seafood gumbo, which is one of my top five favorite dishes. It will include fresh frozen shrimp, Alaskan King Crab, and Maine lobster. I made some stock from the leftover Cornish game hen bones from Christmas dinner, but I may or may not use this stock, as I like for the seafood to dominate. I plan to start cooking early because I want to use as much of the seafood shells for stock as possible. I only add the seafood meat at the very last minute before serving, and I plan on freezing a few servings for later. We got the refrigerator cleaned out on Sunday, which was the first we had to go through and sort everything for the past month or so. I'm very happy with the new space that I recovered and pledge to keep it. Lars

some of my fav's still around include hamburgers at Redamaks in New Buffalo MI and yes I do drive to MI from Chicago just for their hamburgers LOL. We used to have a summer place in New Buffalo MI and that place is THE place to go for lunch & dinner. I still always visit Teibels in Schereville IN when in NW IN seeing friends, I always have the Walleye grilled. My DH makes us stop at Zel's for barbeque sandwiches & plain pulled pork in Hammond IN and Schoops for hamburgers - he won't drive to MI LOL. House of Pizza in Hammond IN when I'm in the mood for square cut, thin pizza. A few fav's long gone include Puntillo's Restaurant, growing up we used to eat fish (either lake perch or breaded cod) there every Friday, they closed up in the mid 80's :-( Ralphs Pizza we used to get pizza delivered on Sat nite or Sundays for Cubs or Bears games when I was little. There was also an awesome DQ around the corner from my house, we used to bug my dad to walk over there and get us a bag of dilly bars in the summer, when we were too little to go by ourselves LOL. Food was very different back then, I rarely find a place to go out to eat that is as good as the restaurants I grew up with :-( ~ liz

Ours is the PA Dutch tradition of pork and sauerkraut.....supposed to be for good luck. Can't find the brand I like here which is SnoFloss....Guess I ws lucky to find any at all though! Most people here don't even know what sauerkraut is! LOL!

Blackeyed peas and corn bread here.Has to be dried peas,for luck.
CR-I love sauerkraut but eat it with "weenies" chopped up in it.We have it every so often.DH even likes it.He won't eat cabbage but will eat sauerkraut.LOL

We always help our neighbor celebrate his birthday....with enchiladas, tamales, beans, rice and apple cake.

No food traditions on New Years Day but we do have the Scottish tradition of waiting for a dark haired "first footer" to cross the threshold.

I'm going to my friend's Mom's on New Years Day to have another turkey dinner with all the trimmings and plenty of libations to toast the New Year.

Dried blackeyed peas cooked with smoked ham chunks, turnip greens, cabbage and pork baby back ribs and cornbread is what we are having. I can't wait. Cooked my peas and greens already.

We also have the German/PA/Dutch tradition of Pork and Sauerkraut. I make mashed potaotes to go along with them. Smother the pork with the kraut and cook low and slow. The meat falls off the bones...I'm in heaven.

We never did anything like that when I was growing up (in Chicago) I do remember MOM making a ham dinner on NY day but that was all.

I guess I'm going to have another bad year. I don't like any of that stuff. Don't have any traditions for New Year's here.

Linda, it's okay..we don't eat that here either..Hubby's from the south..and hates Blacked Peas...and the only "greens" he likes are sauted spinach...and pork products must be "meaty"...lol ribs, roasts..loin..chops...nothing odd...
I've got pork ribs planned for dinner...oven baked and probably stuffed... and roasted red potatoes and spinach sauted for him..salad for me...
The boys will whine..and ask for hotdogs!
