collard greens, oh they smell

awful. I will admit they are from a can and they were already seasoned. Last time I smelled that smell was 40 years ago. My dads aunt lived in a cabin surrounded by the Natchez Tenn woods. She was all southern and she was making them the day we visisted. The smell hit me in the face like a stick. Today, it's the same. I'm not sure I can eat them. The pork is almost done, the rice, the beans, all that will be ok.

I thought about buying greens, or turnip greens instead. Anyone think those are any differnt? better?

I'm gonna take one bite at least and give my opinion later. (I feel like I'm on survivor)

In a can?? No way. Can't be better. Wish I could have some of your aunt's collards.

Turnip greens don't smell the same. Collards cooked with turnip greens and kale or something are really good. I don't cook them but will eat them !

Natchez Tenn? Natchez MS or maybe Nashville TN? Just curious.

Collards are probably the main reason i even have a garden....We eat them several times a week... grandma used to steam them for 45+ minutes with salt pork, a ham bone or neck bones and fresh picked red hot peppers.... I do not eat pork so I usually slow cook mine as well but with smoked turkey parts, onions and a few dashes of crush red peppers. Though I can cook spinach in 3 minutes flat, I like my collards cooked long & slow with very little water. My ex-Mother-in-law tends to make her more of a soup with a lot of water... As a kid, one of my chores was to pick collards from the backyard garden and my grandma insisted all of the greens be picked before the leaves for to be too big.... Even, by chance, if we went to a local grocer to buy greens, it was nearly a sin to bring home greens with big leaves..... was said they get bitter and too tough to cook properly. I am not fond of kale at all...I have an older neighbor who grows a lot of kale to sell at local farmer's market. He notes that his black customers seem to prefer collards while his white customers prefer kale....I tend to think its a more of a Northern/Southern thing since I literally live a few miles from the Mason-Dixon line. my mother & grandma both like to mix Collards with Mustard or turnip greens... I'm not as fond of that but my kids seem to prefer a mix of all 3. Collards tend to get gritty ( sandy) so I usually soak them overnight in vinegar before even attempting to further clean and cook them....that soaking also helps cut any potential bitterness the greens may have.

Kale and collards do very well in my zone, and it is true, they benefit from a frost (which we are getting already!). I did plant the green glaze collard after our little bit of frosty wheather, and they still tasted good, this is why I mentioned them. A nice green that does really well in warm weather is amaranth. There are several varieties and some have leaves that are sizable to use as wraps. However, because of the oxalic acid they should be cooked. There is also New Zealand spinach, but the nutritional profile is nowhere that of collards (or kale). So yes, people in z9-11 still want to grow the Brassica oleraceas, because they are the most nutritious! and some of us eat primarily out of our gardens, summer and winter. Or what passes for winter around here. I just call it warm season and cool season gardening. Mauirose I want some of that chard! Happy, I took my kale out and planted a bunch of onions on that bed, to try to discourage the squirrel. It figured out it (they) like chard! Now they are 'planting' pecans all over my beds to try to store them for the winter, the silly things. Because of them we get pecan 'trees' sprouting all over the place in the spring.

“All washers have filter.” I’ve been wondering about that. 🤔 On my Samsung it was accessible from a front access panel, but not on my Maytag. No mention in the manual. Looked for a video, didn’t find my exact model. One said remove front bottom panel. I don’t have one. Another showed how to access from the back. so I pulled out the washer, and cleaned decades of dust. Found a floor drain that I didn’t know existed. Could that have been the source of sewer smell or dead animal when we first moved in? 🐁Never did pinpoint that but it went away. Took off back panel, saw boot from tub to pump, connection from pump to hose, no filter like in the videos. Put everything back and googled some more: ”Maytag model MAH5500 does not have a drain pump filter to check and clean. The only time the drain pump will need to be accessed is if the drain pump is faulty and needs to be replaced.” 🤐 Could have saved myself some effort, but it was not a waste. Nice to have less accessible areas cleaned from time to time. And in the course of my googling found that the washer has a liquid filled ring for balancing. So there’s NOT water remaining after the cycle, as I had suspected due to sloshing sounds! 💦 Enough excitement (and emojis) for a Saturday morning. Tweaked my back in the course of all this. Rest for a bit and then decide how powerful to go with the drugs. 💊 Thanks, dcarch, I THINK!

sheez! I doubt canned collards are that wonderful but possibly a reasonable substitute. No? lol. No wonder I'm not a cook. I'm still gonna try them.

I made ham and bean soup.......close enough to all those things that are 'suppose' to be eaten on the New Year....that I only learned from coming to the KT! =)

You gotta buy GLORY collard greens. DIL's mother brought them, today, as she did last year, for NY's lunch, and they are DELICIOUS! And I'm not a collard green's fan, love turnip greens. Perfectly seasoned from the can!

Oh my dear, glenda_al...We have just finished dinner and much to my families disapointment I had opted not cook "Real" collard greens serving Glory Collard Greens instead... and to be honest, I too was quite disappointed! NEVER AGAIN...in fact, I'll have to cook real greens with bacon drippings ASAP to make up for it! I should have made canned Popeye!

MY DM cooked collard greens, or collard greens with turnip greens and mustard greens, or collard greens with turnip greens and kale (All fresh). I'm sure they were cooked with fat back or "streak-a-lean". They also used a little vinegar on them. I could never eat them. I would eat curly kale.
I think greens out of a can would need a lot of seasoning, such as mentioned above. Also try the vinegar or add chopped onion (not cooked in).

Don't know about GLORY greens, but if Glenda says they are good, they must be good!

I can't imagine greens from a can cuz I've never had them. I love fresh collard greens or fresh turnip & mustards. Do as Sue says and add some vinegar. It makes it much better.

In fact, make yourself up a little chow-chow = chopped raw onions, diced fresh tomatoes and mix this in with a little vinegar. Then mix that with your cooked greens. mmgood! Do it on your plate before you begin eating.

I don't even like tomatoes but chow-chow is great with greens.

I've never eaten canned greens of any kind. Maybe sometime I will try them. I cooked frozen turnip greens mixed with some collards. I couldn't find any mustard greens in the frozen food area. I also cooked some cabbage today. Talk about a smelly house...peeeuuuuu....but they sure did taste good. We also had a pork loin roast, macaroni and cheese, hoppin john and corn bread. I filled up on the greens, HJ and cornbread and didn't want any pork, but since it's new years day I cut a small piece of and ate it. Let 2008 begin!!! I am ready!!!

The 8 of us really enjoy Glory collards, two New Years straight. You don't, and that's what makes the world go around :o)

Ok! I'm going to be honest. Well, it's best to say NO COMMENT on the Glory collard greens. Maybe the mixed greens or turnip greens would be better for me. The black eyed peas on wild rice was good though.
I'm trying more southern foods! Had a small bowl of grits at Cracker Barrel the other day. Put a little honey in it too. Yum.

Aren't we both glad options are available for all of us "great granny cooks"!

I really like other GLORY products..have you tried their honey glazed carrots...delicious! And don't hesitate to try their seasoned southern style smothered potatoes with sliced carrots. They are slow simmered in a savory chicken gravy!

I add a large can of drained chunk chicken (sometimes I add 2 cans of chicken), a small drained can of peas, a can of chream of chicken soup, a can of campbell's canned chicken gray or your favorite ....top with your favorite receipe of crust or add dumplings! makes a wonderful, warm, harty chicken pot pie! My family loves it! It's really easy and makes you "the best cook" until it's all gone!
